Case in point: me. I don't buy CDs. I occasionally buy tracks from the ITMS. Thus artists do not make more money from my CD purchases than from my digital purchases - it's a comparison between "nothing" and "something". The ITMS is infinitely more profitable for the artist if buying behavior like mine is the norm.
the Macbook pro had DVI out, but for audio, i have to use a USB to composite (red/white) cable. So even if the media is Dolby5.1, the laptop sends it to my stereo in.. 2channel stereo.
What are you talking about? Every Macbook/Macbook Pro has audio OPTICAL OUT. It'll do 6.1 DTS.
Don't blame the hardware if the problem is that you don't know how to use it.
Actually, if you read the document, I think you'll see that it says making MP3s and putting them in the shared folder is unauthorized. It doesn't say it would be unauthorized to make MP3s and put them in a non-shared folder.
Actually, if you read the document, I think you'll see that you're wrong. That *is* what it says.
you mean the people trying to develope drought and pest resistant plants so that 3rd world countries in even the most dry area's are able to feed themselfs. yeah wow what assholes.
The thing is, they develop drought- and pest-resistant plants that cannot reproduce. So once those plants been harvested, they die. And you have to go back to your friendly neighborhood Monsanto distributor to buy seed all over again.
The key criterion is "most efficient". A Roman legion could (and did) kill hundreds of thousands of people in a matter of hours using spears and short swords. Their modern counterparts rely on hyperexpensive technology and tools. Not efficient.
There's a thousand and one makers of x86 clones, but only one that has the apple branding, reputation and the capability to legally run OSX
"Legally run"? I'll run OS X on any goddamn thing I like and there's nothing Apple can do about it. Because, you see, Apple Inc is a company, and companies don't yet actually WRITE LAWS. Apple can wave EULAs around all it wants, I don't give a shit. Because EULAs aren't laws.
I really liked the novelisation of ROTS, far more than the actual movie. In the novel Anakin is written as a gifted prodigy... who is also bat-shit crazy. Like, seriously clinically insane. And it works.
I did the same as you, built up home NAS box, and yes it worked for backups. Then I found out about Amazon S3, and with the available s3cmd scripts, it's pretty easy automating backups to S3. Good news is, I spend about $.50USD/month - that's fifty cents per month on this backup strategy. It's offsite, which is good. It's as fast as your broadband connection, and it's available globally. IIRC, they also offer storage in other countries too, and offer an API to develop your own software to S3.
Well worth it, IMHO.
Completely agree. I've been using S3 (via Jungle Disk) for a couple of months now, and it's fantastic. I now have no need for a home NAS.
Email has been ruined by spam. Either you don't give out your address, meaning that you cannot make wide use of it, or you get too much spam or you use gmail, which solves all the problems.
Their users also must not break the law, per the TOS.
Sounds a bit circular to me. "If you are shown to be breaking the law we will turn over your emails which will be used to show you are breaking the law and thus we will turn over your emails which will be used..."

But, once again apple's closed-system philosophy is their undoing.
Yep, those Macbook, Ipod, and Iphone sales figures sure do suck.
At $200+ per share I'll have some of that "undoing" myself thanks.
It's called a "dash". Sorry if your public-school education missed that one out.

No, sorry. When only four out of a thousand people believe something is wrong, it's not wrong any more. Society has changed its mind on this issue.
If you (and I mean "you" in a general sense) have an Apple laptop with a factory-installed Seagate hard drive, and you
a) haven't backed up every byte at hourly intervals, and;
b) keep sensitive data on that hard drive, then
c) you deserve no sympathy when the drive dies. Because it will.
Google "seagate+macbook" for hours of fun.
You're already at +5, but kudos to you sir. Very nice :)

And while the "bit" was an interesting character, it wouldn't be able to emphasize no as "no no no no" in a tight situation.
They screwed up, giving the bit three states: 1, 0, and "waiting for question".
And the guy just happened to have a huge quantity of Crisco lying around?
Actually, I don't want to know.

Apple's using BSOD icons for Windows network shares in Leopard makes this all the more embarrassing for Apple.
So what icons does Windows use for representing Apple filesharing protocol shares?

the US armed forces are the most efficient bunch of people in history when it comes to killing other people quickly and en masse
Sorry, but by those criteria my money is on the Roman legion.
And boy those AH64s sure sorted out all the problems in Afghanistan and Iraq didn't they?
Oh. Wait.
still no cure for cancer.
Yeah, I can see the conversation.
Engineers: "The peak wave height ever recorded in the area is 15 metres, so we're going to design and build the platform to withstand 30-metre waves."
Beancounters: "Do you have any scientific basis for that recommendation?"
Engineers: "Well, no, but we heard this old sailor telling stories one day..."
Beancounters: "YOU'RE FIRED".

Whaddya know, the USA moves at a meeting in Texas that something scientific is just too hard to understand and should be dumbed down.
