    Case in point: me. I don't buy CDs. I occasionally buy tracks from the ITMS. Thus artists do not make more money from my CD purchases than from my digital purchases - it's a comparison between "nothing" and "something". The ITMS is infinitely more profitable for the artist if buying behavior like mine is the norm.

    the Macbook pro had DVI out, but for audio, i have to use a USB to composite (red/white) cable. So even if the media is Dolby5.1, the laptop sends it to my stereo in.. 2channel stereo.

    What are you talking about? Every Macbook/Macbook Pro has audio OPTICAL OUT. It'll do 6.1 DTS.

    Don't blame the hardware if the problem is that you don't know how to use it.

    If you (and I mean "you" in a general sense) have an Apple laptop with a factory-installed Seagate hard drive, and you

    a) haven't backed up every byte at hourly intervals, and;
    b) keep sensitive data on that hard drive, then

    c) you deserve no sympathy when the drive dies. Because it will.

    Google "seagate+macbook" for hours of fun.

    Actually, if you read the document, I think you'll see that it says making MP3s and putting them in the shared folder is unauthorized. It doesn't say it would be unauthorized to make MP3s and put them in a non-shared folder. Actually, if you read the document, I think you'll see that you're wrong. That *is* what it says.

    you mean the people trying to develope drought and pest resistant plants so that 3rd world countries in even the most dry area's are able to feed themselfs. yeah wow what assholes.

    The thing is, they develop drought- and pest-resistant plants that cannot reproduce. So once those plants been harvested, they die. And you have to go back to your friendly neighborhood Monsanto distributor to buy seed all over again.

    The key criterion is "most efficient". A Roman legion could (and did) kill hundreds of thousands of people in a matter of hours using spears and short swords. Their modern counterparts rely on hyperexpensive technology and tools. Not efficient.

    I did the same as you, built up home NAS box, and yes it worked for backups. Then I found out about Amazon S3, and with the available s3cmd scripts, it's pretty easy automating backups to S3. Good news is, I spend about $.50USD/month - that's fifty cents per month on this backup strategy. It's offsite, which is good. It's as fast as your broadband connection, and it's available globally. IIRC, they also offer storage in other countries too, and offer an API to develop your own software to S3.

    Well worth it, IMHO.


    Completely agree. I've been using S3 (via Jungle Disk) for a couple of months now, and it's fantastic. I now have no need for a home NAS.

    Email has been ruined by spam. Either you don't give out your address, meaning that you cannot make wide use of it, or you get too much spam or you use gmail, which solves all the problems.
