  4. Number line on Teaching Fractions: The Tootsie Roll Is the New Pie · · Score: 1

The number line is used a lot too, and they look mighty similar to the fraction line. I could see it confusing some kids. Especially as the curriculum likes so much to teach key word vocabularies and associate particular visualizations with particular concepts in such an inflexible manner

My biggest complaint with math education is that the schools seem so inflexible in it. My 6th grader is doing OK with math so he's in the "7th grade" math class. Along with, as it turns out, most of the rest of the 6th grade students. If he had done better he would be promoted to the 8th grade class.

Basically I think they just renamed 6th grade math to call it 7th grade math probably to appease parents, and the whole "early promotion to 8th grade math" would seem to raise questions over whether the 7th grade curriculum is all that worthwhile anyway, and wouldn't this bright kid be learning at a higher rate than the average 8th grader

it's just all wrong, yet these are the only options they will consider, its as if the math teachers are unfamiliar with math or at least uncomfortable splitting the class into three or four groups and teaching each group at its own pace for each major topic

If you were to double the burger flipper's salary it does not triple the price of the product. I'd be surprised if there was more than 2 minute's total labor in getting a burger from the chiller to the drive-through window. At minimum wage that's 20 cents or so, doubling the minimum wage for the burger restaurant staff doesn't come close to tripling the cost of a big mac, even less so a full meal. With the cost of oil, land, water etc. I would imagine that the minimum-wage human labor cost component of the raw ingredients was pretty low too, sure there will be labor costs for marketing etc. But those guys aren't on minimum wage.

Not that I'm a fan of that, but there are far worse regimes. The NSA, GCHQ etc. should each host secure email systems that of course they can read, but Bashar al Assad, Hosni Mubarak, Robert Mugabe etc. (in fact anyone other than the country that runs it) should be denied access, even if they are an ally. That way a dissident could pick a secure email service from a country they trust. It's not an option you have to use, but it would be an interesting option to have.

From the quick scan of the linked page, it seems that the leading math textbook was used to teach for an additional hour each week. It doesn't seem to me that all things were kept equal.
Secondly, it has been a constant source of frustration how "locked in" K-12 schools seem to be over math tuition. They will not deviate from what is "on grade" at any cost, the system seems to be set up entirely for the convenience of the teachers without regard for the students. If a student is doing well, they may consider promotion from, 6th grade to 7th or even 8th grade. But those are the only choices and they make no logical sense to me. If the teacher has a Phd in math I can't see why he/she can't shepherd students through material that is at least slightly tailored to their needs.

Sure it will take 90 minutes to make the SFO-LA trip, but there's no check-in, you have your own car when you get to the destination and aside from adding a wall alongside the HOV lane and adding the automated entry barriers and lanes the infrastructure is essentially already in place. There are lots of risks in life, when it came to vaccinating my children (and for that matter, myself) I held to the belief that they were better off with the vaccine. The herd immunity/social responsibility issue was not the prime driver for me, though it's a nice bonus. I'll go further, I think that the odds were so lopsided that it is markedly irresponsible to not vaccinate. I hope the vaccines will improve as time goes on and make the case yet stronger for vaccination. I'm pretty sure that there are a lot of people working on that very thing.
