If there are 300 armed passengers on a plane, each with full clips at takeoff, what makes you think there will be just one bullet hole in the wreckage of the fuelage if they thought they saw a hijacker (not to mention that many of them would be firing in the direction of the pilots) ?
Before 9/11 even passengers with guns would not have opened fire, after 9/11 the passengers would attack the hijackers with peanuts, floatation cushions, ripped off tray-tables, body parts of other fallen passengers, luggage, drinks carts, soda cans, or whatever else they had to hand to their last breath until the hijacker is dead.
Pools are generally not concealed about one's person though. So I can see them and keep my children away from them. How do I keep them away from the bozo who accidentally discharges a CCW in the supermarket. Perhaps I should get one of these scanners.
I don't disagree about it being media driven, perhaps I shouldn't have used the term "understand", I certainly didn't mean it in any deep sense.
But relativity isn't in the news anywhere near as much as global warming and as a consequence I think many people could state that many scientists believe that the Earth is gradually warming because of greenhouse gasses produced by man's activities, and something about icebergs melting, seal levels rising etc.
I don't think so many people would be likely to be able to state equivalent beliefs about special relativity, for example that it involves apparent changes in mass, length and time as a consequence of the speed of light being the same to all observers or know of its application as an explanation of the transformation between electric and magnetic effects. Hell, asking people to explain "what is mass" is asking a lot.
No I think global warming has been in the news enough to allow people to at least form an opinion, by the low standards of what it means to form an opinion nowadays.
My point is that the anti-scientists exploit these popular science issues, if they really had a point about the lack of rigor in science they would be making it against all sciences, not just the furry cute ones.
The reason climate science is open to this kind of attack is that climate scientists have done a reasonable job of getting the public to understand at least the basic points of the argument. Other fields, like say relativity, would be under more attack if the general population understood them better. Perhaps scientists won't say how a magnet works because they want to preserve some areas of science for future generations.
Anything that raises the median level of understanding is good for all of us. How many times have I created "amazing" results using grep | cut | sort in a few seconds and then marveled at the way computing outsiders wonder at the magic of it all. How many issues have been caused through lack of understanding that "5" != 5 ? So many little things could be taught in a day or two that would really raise awareness and translate well into almost any field.
Lots of people learn to code on their own from books, online articles and magazines (I did). Surely even a little guidance could kickstart the process the process for a reasonable and motivated candidate.
option 3: Make the ATMS thin and for locations that have a secure vault have a second server in the bank vault that can proxy for the network if it goes down for a few hours and if you want, have two network connections. That should cover most eventualities.
There are lots of scary interpretations of the law, but I can also see that the Belarus government would imagine that this might create hi-tech jobs in-country (managing the servers) and provide some form of security in so much as their national businesses could continue to run if for any reason internet access were cut off to the rest of the world (like for example they decided to cut their people off from the world)
I have to wonder what it would have garnered if it had been accorded a check-box like the "proper" religions. "Proper" religions must be terrified of the combined effects of people being comfortable enough to express what they really feel to censuses and having other choices made easy. This sort of thing can snowball.
Bun molds, glue and maybe even air-brushing are not post-production techniques, they all take place before the shutter clicks. I suggest they take the damn photo as-is and spare the model and products whatever grizzly pre-production processes are needed, photoshop (or gimp, even better) the result, prop a print-out of it up under good lighting and re-photograph it. That way it can be an unretouched photo for use in the ads.
For example, a suite of compatible languages that allow one to code the same thing in different languages and have a system prove that they have equivalent functionality and if not, spit out meaningful descriptions of what needs to change to converge the implementations.
To my mind, the moderation method is a side issue, and one of its virtues should be simplicity even if that brings a few flaws. The most important issue is the quality of the contributors that a site attracts. Have you seen comments on CNN or Yahoo recently ? My god they are awful and make the worst troll on slashdot look like an erudite bard.
Besides, it seems to me that the secret sauce is in how mod points are allocated, looking at UIDs there seem to be enough slashdot participants to share the moderation workload without needing to delegate, and the quality of moderation issue can easily be handled by allocating modpoints appropriately and trying to spot people with multiple UIDs
.
Moderation may frustrate many here, but I don't think it is the most important reason people choose to use or not use slashdot. For me the reason to tune in is to read the great comments that I see here, I learn something new and worthwhile every day.
one problem is when you are doing things for many people. If you are in the office people can see you doing things for others, if you are not there to be seen they simply assume you're doing nothing unless you're doing something for them.
even with the discount it's $10 for 13 cakes that have a total ingredient cost of, I would guess, less than a couple of dollars. It seems like she should be able to make money on a deal like that, especially as she does not have to worry about the cakes going stale waiting for a sale. Also, she now has reached 8500 new customers, which was presumably the point of the whole thing. I suspect her business mistake is going into a venture where you have to sell a $2 cupcake, even when made in bulk, just to break even.
If you really want to contribute to the narrative, you should program one of your function keys to emit the string "Frosty Piss". You'll save valuable time when composing your groundbreaking first post.

If, combined, will the 2300 cmdlets do as much as awk.

I agree, having twelve fingers really improves typing speed.

They'll probably create a code using things they already know about you, like a social security number, drivers license number etc.
or for more motion strap it to the lower leg while hiking. I've even seen generating heel inserts.

just redefine the inch to be something more friendly than 25.4mm (say, 25.6mm) the pint as half a liter the pound as half a kilo and you're there.

Except if I did it it would be called scalping, and supposedly morally questionable.
If only they had some kind of small living cell it could be stored in...

one purchase the air valves to make one of these ? Are these low cost items or expensive specialist things.
