  1. Re:Not fairies, just hard-to-make sounds on Tubes vs Transistors: An Audible Difference? · · Score: 1

Well, they do sound better. Look at microphones.....tube mics, vintage tube mics, fetch top dollar compared to the solid state ones.

  2. Re:Of course... on Tubes vs Transistors: An Audible Difference? · · Score: 1
Of course, look at modern music. It's been through so many compressors that it sounds like crap.

I agree, Tubes are a lot better sounding, especially for preamps in mics.

  3. What would be interesting.... on Tubes vs Transistors: An Audible Difference? · · Score: 1
What would be interesting is for someone to take some good music (ie: not heavily compressed, perhaps DVD audio, etc) and do a good test of it.

Being musician, I know that tube mics are very much sought after for recording. Nuemann vintage tube mics especially....

So, it would make sense if people seek to record with a good tube mic, then wouldn't it make sense to want to hear music through tubes?

  4. Re:Hard disks on Bulk Data Storage For The Common Man? · · Score: 1

But would it be safer? I think so. I really wouldn't trust software RAID at all........

  5. Re:Waiting for ... on Bulk Data Storage For The Common Man? · · Score: 1
Depends on how much the data changes. If the data doesn't change much, then 35 discs is not a bad way to backup......

If data changes more, then........it won't be a good solution.

  6. Re:Waiting for ... on Bulk Data Storage For The Common Man? · · Score: 1

Yeah. What, 20 gigs a disc? That might be a good solution. I have a 700Gig RAID that I kind of want to backup.......regular DVDs are not going to cut it (@ 200 discs.....not!)

  7. Re:Hard disks on Bulk Data Storage For The Common Man? · · Score: 1
Thats very interesting. So, the Celeron has roughly the same amount of storage as the main RAID?

And it's a software RAID? Wouldn't it be better to get a hardware controller to do that?

Its like the Napster name. I don't really see that making a big impact compared to iTunes......

Yeah, and now you have a "subscription" service. Hooking you in and keeping you to access songs.....

  10. Re:funny on Copy-protected CD Tops U.S. Charts · · Score: 1

For as long as I can remember, most artists SAY that they really don't make money doing an album, but it is the concerts that make them money. Even jazz guys, such as Michael Brecker, admit that. I imagine that Brittany and J.T. and those other "artists" are in the same boat. They don't make money with the album, but it is the concert venues that put money in the bank.

  11. Re:funny on Copy-protected CD Tops U.S. Charts · · Score: 1

So, then if you are making all your $$$$ with concert tickets, why bother to copy protect your CD? Isn't it just something that is going to cause problems for people who want to legally use it (as in rip it to one's iPod or something?) ??

  12. funny on Copy-protected CD Tops U.S. Charts · · Score: 3, Insightful

  13. Re:Software raid on Which RAID for a Personal Fileserver? · · Score: 1
Exactly. I decided to use my old Pentium III 600 for a server to hold my music collection which was taking up all but 1 gig of my 250 gig drive.

I got an Adaptec 2400a off Ebay for $175

Got 4 250 gig, 5400 RPM Western Digital drives at $180 or so apiece.

Got a Antec case, Performance II?

    Good, fast, stable.

Oh, my Pentium III is servering very well as a RAID 5 server right now (Adaptec 2400a, 4 250 gig drives).

But in general, it seems that Apple's hardware has a longer life than your typical Windows PC.

  16. Re:Go APPLE !! on Apple Previewing New Power Mac? · · Score: 1

Yes, the 9500 has been upgraded. G4 700, 1.5 gigs of ram, Firewire/USB/IDE card. And I pursuded it to install OS X with XPostFacto. Stable, fast system.

I know I shouldn't feed the Trolls but....

Honestly, the life of an Apple product is a lot longer than a typical windows PC. I still use my Powermac 9500 (running 10.3.4) but I have retired my 600Mhz Pentium III.

And how many people do you see driving old BMWs compared to Toyotas? Which looks better?
