True, but I think Frank Herbert was working on yet another book in the series before he died. In the intro text in his son's "House: X" books he mentions it. Hopefully we'll see that come out in the near future.....
But that's the point though. How are you supposed to figure out if something exists or not? You have to sift through all that data and see if you can hear anything ET might have sent.......
Though, it would be nice to see SETI get it's own telescope to do research.......
DSL was a pain to set up, but, once I had it installed, it has been working GREAT for almost a year now. And its Pacbell as well. Surprise, surprise.
My previous place had Covad DSL, and that was fairly reliable as well, though the speed of that connection was not nearly as fast.
I think that as cable companies and phone companies upgrade/update their infrastructure, we'll see more people get DSL or Cable. I think it will be something like the Cable service. You'll not really have much of a choice other than to use AT&T At Home or Pacbell DSL (here on the west coast).
Competition can be a bad thing, ie: look at the energy situation here. But if I had 2 choices, that would be better than just one. Kinda like using either Satelitte or Cable. Both cost about the same.........
Dvorak's statements could be akin to this article 10 years from now.... --
I teach kids, from 3rd grade to high school. In California. The one thing that really distrubs me is the amount of homework they have. I mean, hours upon hours of homework. And now they are going to "track" kids in school? WTF!
Whatever happened to kids developing their own sense of self? Most of the kids I teach have such scripted lives. School, then Soccer (or Baseball, or football, or all of them), then homework, then.......Its crap. These kids are KIDS. Having 6th graders stay up till 11:30am doing homework is not right. --
I know that ever since FreeBSD went to 4.3, every time I cvsup it, buildworld then installworld, I have MAJOR problems with Perl not working. It is very frustrating.....
On the otherhand, Apple 9.1 updates are painless, and everything works. Same with OS X. You can schedule these to run every now and then, or manually, and its painless, and everything works (so far).......... --
Apple might not be everyone's favorite company on Slashdot, but they have done a number of technical feats that companies like the Borg have not done.
For instance, remember when they switched over to the PowerPC from the Motorola 68XXX series of chips? I do. I had a mac with a 68XXX in it, and then a PowerPC computer. For a while I had the two running concurrently. Both could run the software even though they were different chips.
System stability. Having used a Mac since the Finder 4 days (dual floppies rule!), I've always been impressed with the stability of the system software. Crashes of a system have never proven fatal for me, and I have crashed many a mac. I wish I could say the same for the PCs I've had (windows 3.1, 95, 98, NT, 2000).
I think Apple's new OS X looks great. And Apple knows it can't ingore the existing apps for the older system, and is providing support for those apps (as long as the apps didn't break any "no nos"). My experience so far with running OS X prereleases is very very favoriable. You can access Unix command, but most of it is hidden by default. The hardcore Unix guy can easily tweak everything to their heart's content. The average user will notice a few changes but will benefit from Multitasking (FINALLY!), memory protection, etc. Hopefully NO MORE frozen macs.
The only complaint with OS X is that my Midi programs don't run...:-( --
That would suck if your walking with it, and it crashes.........and you walk into traffic or something trying to get the thing to reboot...
I have a palm pilot, and debate about whether or not to get Omnisky or something. But, I'd rather socialize with REAL PEOPLE than check the spam email I get or see if Commander Taco posted a new story so I can try to get a FP..... --
and why would one want to use such a thing? Perhaps that is why we in California are having an energy shortage. People shrinking metals over at Intel! --
True. I think if maybe email servers would scan incomming message attachments and then flag them as being suspecious, and make that PLAIN AND CLEAR to a user, then we wouldn't have need for virus scan utilities.
I believe its a marketing hype. Like taking drug X to prevent some disease. No one can prove that drug X is going to prevent, but you can't disprove it either.
So, yeah, I think email server admins should rightly scan attachments for scripts and exe's, and if present, then make it CLEAR to the user that if they run it, it could be dangerous.......
But then again, how many people actually heed a warning, let alone read them? --
I think a lot of it is hype. You THINK you really need a virus protection program. You really probably don't. I have met so many people CONVINCED that they can get a virus. Honestly, I have NEVER had one on my *gasp* windows machine. And get all kinds of questionable programs and stuff all the time.
It's marketing, marketing fear to people who don't know anything about computers...... --
Well, maybe the ONLY reason. Pacbell certainly doesn't have the customer service, nor good install times (too me 6 months to get), nor reliable service (speeds can get damn slow sometimes)....
And updating FreeBSD is a lot easier than linux. Run cvsup to sync your sources, then a cd to/usr/src and a make world (or a two part make buildworld, make installworld), and your upto date. I love running FreeBSD. Don't have to worry about the server crashing (NEVER has)..... --

Slowing down? It's Dead Jim!
First post using a TiBook!

Of course you can't get on the stupid site

FreeBSD is not something to make fun of. It is quite good.

oh please...........thats just plain sad

This is absolutely stupid. What a waste of fuel. Having internet access is not THAT important....

Your right, the Palm Vx I own looks cool. I use it as my wallet, with one of those leather carrier things.
What I love about the Vx is the size and that I only have to charge it once in a while, like every two weeks or so.
I bought it for USING it not playing games.

That stuff was just crap....

That was totally off topic but hella funny

Good bye Napster,
Good bye Napster,
I won't be using you now.
I think it's time to uninstall it.
Maybe if Napster moved to Canada we could use it without all this crap.
Then of course the RIAA's song would be "Blame Canada".......

AWESOME!

Blame Canada
For all the Volkswagon Bugs
they go around hangin' 'round like thugs
Seriously, lets declare war on them and force them to feed California all their electricity!
