  1. Osama on Space Exploration Act of 2002 · · Score: 3, Insightful
Perhaps if we suggest that Osama Bin Laden was on the moon then the press would be interested. Or perhaps that there are Taliban there.

They don't seem interested in space or anything productive nowadays. Crime, terror, or sex is what the media likes.

And this brings up the idea that Apple should support OS X on older hardware. It runs on my 9500 with a G3 card. That would be some great incentive to some owners that have older systems.

Hmm, my old Epson 740 worked under OS X....

Yeah, but a lot of things don't work right in OS X. Like this laser printer I bought. A brother. I never turn it off. It's in standby mode or whatever. Under OS 9, when I decide to print, I print and it turns itself on, and does it's business. Under OS X, I have to power cycle the printer because OS X won't find it during boot up. And even then, if I run something under Classic mode, it doesn't always find the printer, even though OS X did. Very strange.

I still really LOVE OS X though, and as soon as my favorite programs get OS Xed, I'm there. OS X can RUN the programs under Classic mode, but they don't always work right.....:-(

Ah, but consider the changes involved in something like a music program. From what I have heard, Midi support in OS X didn't really even get in until 10.1.

The good news is that all the things I hear about MIDI program on OS sounds like they will kick butt. But I will have to wait till the two apps that I use just about every day, Finale and Digital Perfomer, run on OS X. I was also considering getting a ProTools interface too, but that won't run under OS X either...:-/

  6. Not quite as good as 9.x yet on Apple Drops Mac OS 9 · · Score: 4, Insightful
A lot of things still don't work as well as 9.x yet. For example, a USB laser printer I got for my G4 Cube. It takes longer for it to print under OS X than in 9.2.

Then there are programs I used everyday, MUSIC programs, like Finale and Digital Performer, that don't work (Performer) in OS X or are buggy (Finale).

I mean, it's great that they want to move to OS X. It's a great OS. I love running it. I just can't get all the things I need to work on it yet. And, if memory serves me, didn't Apple support System 7.X for a long time after System 8 came out? And when they switched to Power PC Chips from Motorola 680XX chips. We had FAT (68K/PPC) programs for like years.

What is the big rush Steve?

Off the subject, but I go from like 3pm till 7 or 8pm.

But, music and computer programming are very much related. Seeing relations and patterns. Being able to approach things in a different way. Being able to follow a certain format for coding. I could go on. I thought programming was very much like music. In fact, I believe in the EARLY days of computers, musicians were sought for programming.......

  8. Former MIS and programmer on Is Programming a Dead End Job? · · Score: 1
I was a Oracle/ASP/Perl programmer for a company for 2 years. It was intense. I found I was spending all my weekends there, working on projects, and even logging in at home (via a Frame relay, since this was before DSL) to do work. It was insane! Net pay for all that work.......$35K.

The company eventually went out of business due to lack of money management (ie: upper management was buying cars, paying ex-wife's rents, etc).

I turned to what I actually majored in at school, music. Now, I teach 20-24 hours a week and make about the same amount. More importantly, I feel that students (adults and kids) get something out of it. I mean, I can feel good after a day because I encouraged someone to learn a craft.

Compare that to running a report on aggrigate numbers for some smuck who needs it in 2 hours and just told you that he needs it.

    I'd never go back. Period.

My god, less friendly, slower!?!? Then leave the stuff in. I run windows XP. I hardly ever use IE. Mozilla is what I use. In fact, I hardly use any of uncle bill's software. Trillian is the little app that connects me to IMs (AOL, Yahoo, MSN, etc). I just run windows for games and a couple of music apps.

I guess the real issue is that 3rd party companies never get a chance to really show people that their stuff is better. I know a lot of Windows users use EVERYTHING that came on the computer and don't even know that you can use different browsers, email programs, IM programs, etc etc.

  13. good job on Mozilla Tree Closes for 1.0 · · Score: 1
I've been using Mozilla for a LONG time on both my Mac (OS X and 9.1) and my Windows 2000/Xp machine. I download builds fairly regularly. They have been getting progressively faster and more stable. The current Windows release is very very nice. I don't every feel the need to open uncle bill's browser.

The Mac OS X and 9.1 builds are not quite as stable. The last build for OS X would crash when I used the IMAP email client. Still, it's nice.

I'm wondering when they are going to put spell checking in. The Netscape 6 releases all have a spell checker, and NONE of the Mozilla releases have such support....

I like the idea of this little box computer. It would be great for me, a musician, to have to run virtual instruments on, like Gigastudio or something. But, if the fans are LOUD, then, that kills that idea.

Yes, a G4 cube is an awesome computer for a musician. It is basically SILENT. My 400Mhz G4 cube has a nice beefy 20 gig hard drive, and works great using either Digital Performer or Felttip Sound Studio to record the output of my mixer via a USB link with an iMic.

I want to get a MOTU 828 or 896 audio interface at somepoint, but for now, the Cube and the iMic work great!

  22. Re:PowerBook on Lunchbox Computers for Live Music Performances? · · Score: 2, Informative
Indeed, Apple powerbooks, both the G3 and G4, are pretty much the ones I see and know of people using on gigs. There are a number of interfaces you can get as well, Firewire or USB.

Another thing to perhaps recommend is getting a rack mounted computer. Most gig rigs are in portable racks, so perhaps getting a rack mounted computer would solve the portability/durability issue.

But still, people seem to be more inclined to use laptops or even all in ones like the iMac. It's not so much a ruggedness, but a clean easy hookup issue. Less cables are better, and a laptop with a USB or Firewire hookup to your synths/modules/interfaces that are in racks seems to be the best way to do things....

I really like Mozilla on my Windows 2000 machine. It's almost as fast as IE 6 ( I think that is what is on the machine), and yet I somehow feel safer running something NON-microsoft.....

Mozilla on Mac OS X works great. Not as optimized as IE 5 is though. Soon hopefully......

Mozilla on OS 9.1 doesn't seem to work at all for me. About 2 weeks ago the nightly builds stopped working for my Mac....

I still think the thing that sells me on this browser is the intergration of email/browser. I can do without the composer part. In fact, I don't think I've ever run it in the Mozilla releases.

Now, to try getting Mozilla to work on my FreeBSD machine.......
