    I had a guy open an email that was infected with another virus on TEN different computers in a half-hour because he thought it was really important and it wouldn't open on any of them.

    In this case a normal LART is not enough. Whichever LART you choose should be painful, debilitating, and memorable. A .357 magnum to the pelvis is a good one, or an arm in the chipper / shredder (preferably their mouse arm) would demonstarte the point nicely. Some may prefer to apply LSD and then strap the Luser down and force him or her to watch the live action Popeye starring Robin Williams 10 times in a row, along with a forehead tattoo that reads 'criminally incompetent'.

    Unless it has at least 3000 lumens, you won't be able to use it in anything but a darkened room. I have wanted a true 1920x1200, 3000+ lumen projector for about 5 years now. They don't exist.

    Then again, I don't think there's a plasma monitor that even does 1600x1200 yet. Until I have HD display options, I will stick to my 12 year old 19" JVC CRT. And, whatever I buy musn't become obsolete for at LEAST another decade.

    You deserve what you get. Doubly so if you are pirating software. You aren't forced to use the program, you choose to. You also choose to pirate it. If you are busted because of choices you have made, tough shit.

    Maybe open source software will look better in the face of fines, jail time, et al. especially if you can't afford the payware.

    Do you understand that all those products you mention are just products? Why would a developer start from scratch and make a Gimp substitute rather than contribute to the Gimp? Unless he felt that the Gimp was broken in some way, he wouldn't.

    Open source isn't about products, people, it's about the process and result.

    It is a work computer, your boss doesn't owe you the ability to scan ebay while you are being paid to do work. By doing so, you cost the company money.

    This is a logical fallacy. Just because you're at work doesn't meant that web browsing costs your company money. I am a generic PC support / network technician at work, and if I don't have anything to do, i browse the web, play Quake 3, and do whatever I feel like (besides look at porn, we don't want to offend customers here). It doesn't cost my boss or his business a cent.

    Maybe you meant to say that shirking off work to browse the web costs the company money, which I agree with entirely.

    Compiling statistics based on the reported browser ID is laughable. Almost everyone has their browsers set to report as MSIE 5.0, Win98 for compatability purposes.

    build a fire

    identify and gather wild food (animal and plant matter, depending on your choice to eat meat or not)

    defend themselves

    choose a campsite

    purify water

    operate firearms safely and effectively

    navigate unfamiliar territory without a map

    provide advanced first aid

    use a canoe

    follow a trail

    make weapons from found material (think wood and stone people)

    make rope

    conserve their energy

    practice good hygene

    communicate effectively.

    Not everyone was an Eagle Scout, or even a Cub Scout, but these skills decide life or death. Don't get me wrong, I love the modern life, but when the shit hits the fan, and eventually it will, do you think your SUV and your credit cards will help you?

    The reason why most folk don't even THINK about this stuff, and about learning new skills, is that they truly are sheeple.

    Again, I don't see end users even comprehending what a kernel is, let alone compiling or tweaking one.

    Not that kernel coding is much different than any other coding. The point is that end users need to know something about computers to use them, just as they need to know something about cars to drive them. The difference here is that they don't WANT to know about the computer, but expect to be able to operate it anyway.

    The funny thing is that people still hold the 19th century protestant work ethic in the highest regard. Never mind that 95% of workers only serve to make their masters richer, and never significantly elevate themselves.

    Debt eats money, and money is earned with time. I love looking at the folks with so much in borrowed belongings (cars, houses, boats, etc) and the slavery they have put themselves into and laugh.

    Success isn't defined by how much money or shit you accumulate, it's defined by how much free time you have to ENJOY such trifles.

    There are a quite a few implementations of AAC. I know that the Quicktime encoder is superb. I know little about other implementations.

    It won't help. The SEC (securities and exchange commision) serves to protect large investment firms and foil attempts for justice by their clients. Just look at their arbitration panels - you are often telling your case to people who are drawing a paycheck from the company you are actioning against. It's truly messed up.

    The reason that it's so fucked up is that in the 70's you could sue your broker for funds mismanagement. People were doing this all the time (as roughly 65% of investment guys are shills) and it was hurting the 'integrity' of the markets. So, now you can't sue. You go tell your sob story to some flacks who work for the opposition. No wonder 'investor confidence' has been pretty much nosediving for the last few decades.

    Shit, if somebody can't finance a new eMac in 6 years, their computing platform is the least of their worries. That's 3 Happy Meals per month. 10 bucks (which is the standard McDonalds hourly wage). I would suggest looking for a real job (McDonald's, anyone?) above trying to squeeze the last bit of whey from your ancient slice of cheese.

    To put this in perspective, all you need to purchase that new eMac is to work 1 hour per MONTH at McDonalds (in case your math sklls need honing).

    No, real ./ readers don't have terabytes of HD space to waste on compressed .WAV's. Real /. readers do listening tests with their favorite encoders, and eventually use the Quicktime AAC at 96 because it sounds as good as the original on NS-10's, Klipsch monitors, the car stereo, the Sony home theater, and their BeyerDynamic headphones. They also laugh when their 'audiophile' friends choose the AAC over the original.
