Thanks Ron!
As a father of three, working full-time, my salary would not afford me the opportunity to go back to college to further my education in an effort to better myself, not only for me, but for my family. Take away federal grants and federal student loans and I will not be able to finish my degree. If you are young, still living at home then you would probably be ok working a part time job to pay for your tuition and books, etc. However, if you are like me (and many of my classmates), who are displaced, trying to work toward another career while working full time and raising a family, those federal funds are necessary.
I honestly believe that we can cut a lot of waste in Washington without ending programs that help people! But what the hell do I know, I'm just one of the 99%.
From Dell's site: "You are already using WINDOWS programs (e.g. Microsoft Office, ITunes etc) and want to continue using them"
Since when is iTunes a WINDOWS program? Damn, Dell will have the boys in Cupertino on their ass next.
I suggest Flight Gear flight simulator. Any modern computer should be able to run it, it is not as graphics intensive as you might think, just need OpenGL. Great game, fun to play and also teaches the physics of flight and world geography. My kids and I love it! You can find pre-built Debian packages at http://packages.debian.org/sid/flightgear they should install just fine on Ubuntu.
Quote from Photo #3 comment: "Release valves designed to let leaking gas escape could not let it out fast enough to prevent the damage."
I hope that money not only goes to repairs but also to beef up the safety net. I'll be really pissed if we destroy our planet over budget concerns.
That's the dumbest thing I have read this week and given current events here in the US that's saying something. The fact is GIMP is an acronym. Very early in it's development it was an acronym for "General Image Manipulation Program". Later on, by version 0.60, one of the founding developers, Peter Mattis, got tired of working with Motif (a graphical widget toolkit) and wrote gtk (gimp tool kit) and gdk (gimp drawing toolkit). The GIMP acronym was subsequently changed to "GNU Image Manipulation Program". Now I'll give away my age and say that to my generation a GIMP was someone with a limp but I do not know too many of my colleagues who picture some poor soul with mobility problems whenever they think of the GIMP. The acronym for GIMP is both relevant and descriptive. If either you or your students limited, feeble minds can not get past a scene from some disgusting movie to the point you felt the need to recommend your students spend $60+ for Adobe's basic editing option then that is your loss. No wonder people laugh when you tell them this. I laugh with them at you.
I don't know what good this commercial will do Microsoft but Hostess and Little Debbie could see their stock go up. I think I'm gonna go buy a box of Twinkies, brb...
Math is perfection embodied and completely logical. Humans are incapable of both perfection and pure logic. We can understand the concepts but we cannot actually achieve them. Conclusion, math is discovered. My two cents anyway and you know what they say about opinions, so the debate shall rage on.
If your average run of the mill dinosaur evolved in a pristine, disease free environment and then all of a sudden were dropped into a disease ridden, insect infested world I could see the connection. But, as logic dictates, if they all evolved at the same time in order for them to reach that state of evolution they would have had to develop an immunity in order to even progress in such an environment. My non-professional two cents for what it's worth.
My favorite game has to be X-Plane hands down. I cannot get enough of this game. It is the closest a poor fat guy like me will probably ever get to flying a real plane or comfortably sitting in one. Seriously though, the flight model is fantastic (very realistic physics), the graphics are great and you can put the world on your hdd for around 80 bucks. You can fly low and slow on a scenic flight through the Blue Ridge Mountains or try an inflight refuel followed by an aircraft carrier landing in the Persian Gulf in a F-4 Phantom. You can try your hand bringing the Space Shuttle Atlantis home at full re-entry or drop your X-15 from the wing of a B52G and fly the paint off the sucker to the edge of the atmosphere. This is only a few of the scenarios and aircraft you can fly. I would love to tell you more but I am next in line for take off, KJFK to EGKK. Speedbird tango-zulu-sierra, cleared for take off! Check it out for yourself at www.x-plane.com
A friend of mine had a C64, God I loved it and wanted one for myself but my parents wouldn't bite. I can remember my Dad telling me that computers were a fad. That kills me now when I think of it, lol. My first was a Timex Sinclair 1000, not the best of experiences. Thank God for my iMac, we've come along way baby!
I am a habitual offender. There I've said it. But it is not my fault. I was raised to be this way. Since I was a child I was taught to share. I was physically spanked and sent to my room without dinner if I would not share my toys with my siblings. Sharing was mandatory in school. I could be reprimanded from the principal if I would not share the swingset or fingerpaints or whatever. Phrases like "share and share alike" or "give somebody else a turn" were ingrained in me since I was very young. As I grew up I would watch TV with the WHOLE family on only ONE TV! When I was old enough to drive I would listen to the radio loud enough for everyone in the car to hear. I asked for a tape recorder for Christmas so I could tape the late night DJ's radio shows. *shame* I need help. You see I am all grown up now and this old dog is having trouble breaking these terrible habits. I am afraid if I don't get help soon I could become a threat to society. You see I am now a parent and I am starting to teach my children my evil sharing ways. When my son wants to keep his tinker toys to himself or put headphones on his radio I have been guilty of trying to get him to SHARE! *cries* Can anyone help? Is there a 12 step program for evil sharing people like me? Please help me before I contribute to the destruction of another generation. Stop the madness, be selfish and just keep it to yourself!!
I agree here. I bought my Mac for the whole package - attractive and powerful hardware, great software included and fantastic support. As an end user I really appreciate the fact that tech support can not only help me with hardware issues but a lot of software issues as well. Another plus is I can dual boot OSX with Windows XP with Boot Camp and run the hell out of Microsoft Flight Sim X! Can't do that on a PC that I know of and if some of you guys have done it I doubt it was as easy as Boot Camp. Oh, and jellomizer is correct, I cannot buy parts for my Mercedes at Autozone or Napa either. But I got what I paid for in both cases and I am a very satisfied customer of both Mercedes and Apple. My two cents.

Unfortunately, even on a Mac you still get the "MS office 30 day nag trial".

Everyone knows real developers work on beer, not on Eclipse.
No, real developers live on coffee and they fear the daylight. They may actually get more done during an Eclipse.

It is a shame some old dogs are not able to learn new tricks. Back on the porch Fido!
