  1. That'll show em! on U2 Threatens to Release Album Early on iTunes · · Score: 1

Erm wait. . . How will this show them again? This seems like a pretty empty threat. Are they under the impression that pirates care if the song is available for sale or not?

I'm not saying this isn't a smart move in that it might sway die-hard U2 fans (if there is such a thing) from the temptation of downloading the tracks from kazaa early -- though I bet most of them who did download them for free early would still buy the cd anyways. . .

Still, I hardly see how this qualifies as news, or why this seems to be worded as an ultimatum to the pirates.

  4. Re:Scanlatons vs. translations on Scanlation: Distributed Manga · · Score: 1

I prefer to buy the Japanese anyways. What's really shocking is, the price of the North American releases. These manga volumes come with a price of 300 yen or so -- in the past that would have been about 2 bucks, now its more like 3. Shipping, unfortunately, runs much deeper and will cost you 3-4 dollars per book depending on how many your shipping at once.

    Here's the thing:
Even though more than half of the cost is shipping, it's still cheaper to buy the original Japanese. The mark up on the North American translations is INSANE -- 10 dollars for a book that would cost 3 in Japan.

Another advantage to buying the original Japanese is that you don't have to rely on someone else's translation. When you watch subtitled anime, you still hear the original audio -- so if the subtitles aren't great, you can simply ignore them (assuming of course you can understand Japanese).

But with scanslations and North American manga releases your stuck with their translation and you can't see the original text. If they completley make stuff up (as some of the anime dubs have been known to do) then you're stuck with it.

Yeah its definately confirmed that family guy is coming back. They're working on new episodes now to begin airing in January of '05 on Cartoon Network. Fox has an option to air those episodes or sell them directly into syndication without ever airing them.

I've heard speculation recently that Fox may indeed exercise thier option to show them first -- so we might get new family guy *THIS* year.

But as for futurama, this sounds more like wishful thinking than anything substantiated. I think Futurama cost alot more to produce per episode than family guy (I could be wrong), so there might not be any profit to be had by making new episodes for syndication. Moreover, I don't think Futurama has had quite the same level of success in DVD sales that family guy had.

The key to Family Guy's ressurection was not only beating letterman and leno in it's time slot on adult swim, but also being the number #1 selling dvd/dvd set in the country for several weeks.

  17. Re:$33 cd? It is going to decrease profit on RIAA's Nasty Easter Egg · · Score: 1

Don't you think that's more than a little unrealistic? Fifty cents a track means a total cost of less than six dollars for most albums. You can pay more than that for a six-pack of decent beer, and it certainly won't last as long as a good album.

I've never understood what people's problem is with paying $10-15 per CD. I have at least a hundred that I bought ten years ago that I still like. How many products in that price range deliver that kind of long-term value, besides film and music?

If I were a professional musician, and my alleged "fans" would only pay fifty cents for their favourite track, I would pack up and quit because it would be so insulting. You can't even buy a soda pop from a vending machine for that little anymore.

I wouldn't want to listen to music from anyone who's in it for the money anyways -- I would consider your departure from the music world a healthful cleansing.

But just so we're clear, artists get very little from cd-sales as it is. If artists could get 50 cents per track, that would be a huge increase.

Also, lets be reasonable. There are significantly lower overhead costs associated with selling music online than there are when you have to create a physical product, ship it to stores, etc.
