  1. Re:Put it on iPods on Apple Behind Intel's USB Competitor? · · Score: 1

Put it on iPods and it becomes ubiquitous almost immediately.

The first iPods had Firewire connectivity. It wasn't until the Windows compatible version was released that the iPod picked up USB. It's not a slam-dunk. Many people want something that "just works". If their PC's don't already have this sort of connection, it might result in a lot of lost sales & returns of iPods that are not compatible without grandma paying someone to install a PCI card for her. Or in the case of netbooks & existing laptops, you're probably screwed.

We all know that Linux is great on hackers' workstations and on servers and in computing clusters, but not so great as a desktop system for average users.

    Bollocks.

All of the tools for a typical office worker are already there. Immense scale Linux desktop deployments can be very easy. An apache cluster serving up the OS install media, clients boot up via PXE & start installing via initial image grabbed over tftp. Many thousands of desktops can be installed in a matter of hours. Basically how fast can your PFY's run around turning machines on? The rest is automated (kickstart!)

Authentication & authorization on UNIX-y platforms are mature technologies.

Automated management is available through a number of tools like cfengine, puppet, and others.

I have deployed 10,000+ seat Windows environments and somewhat smaller Linux environments. Deploying Linux was so much easier! And so was managing it after deployment! At a previous job I was managing about 3,000 Linux hosts as the only Linux sysadmin, and had so much free time that I was spending almost half of my day helping the Windows team manage a much smaller number of systems.

When it was easy to back up a DVD, I legitimately purchased over 600 movies. As the copy protections became increasingly difficult to work around, I simply stopped buying. Hollywood stopped getting my money. I took all that money that I was spending on DVD's and bought a motorcycle instead. Now instead of sitting on the couch wasting 90-120 minutes of my life at a time, I'm spending that time enjoying getting around (rain or shine) like never before.

It's been a year since I ditched the HDTV and maybe 2 years since I stopped buying DVD's. I don't miss it.

  22. 400MP? Not quite. But still better than most DSLR on Volunteers Recover Lunar Orbiter 1 Photographs · · Score: 1

400MP is more than a bit of an exaggeration of reality. I'm a big proponent of medium format films myself but I'm hard pressed to come up with a 120 film that can be expected to resolve at better than 200MP in a 6x6cm square. Just because the drum scanner will scan it at 400MP doesn't mean you're resolving any more detail from the emulsion than you would have at 399MP (let alone 200MP or in most cases 120MP).

With that said, I can take a grainy consumer grade fast film like Ilford HP5+ (ISO 400) and starting from a small web-sized image I can scale up to resolve some pretty incredible distant details. That's consumer film on a consumer flat bed scanner with little in the way of preparation for scanning.

Given a stable shooting platform, like a lunar lander, and a nice slow fine-grained film, such negatives run through modern professional lab grade drum scanners would be of a much higher resolution than you're going to get out of, say, a modern Canon EOS 5D Mk II.
