No, probably not good enough. Most people don't want to have their computers hooked up to their TVs. I actually think MS has the right idea with their MCE Windows and the XBox 360, but I'm sure they'll botch it somehow.

  2. Re:We did it in the 70's! on The Problems With Game Copy Protection · · Score: 1

Part of the reason copy protection wasn't needed again until the mid to late 90's was that games were starting to come on CDs, hard drives were too small to hold the data, and CD burners were still far too expensive.

This is the real news here. Instead of going crazy and blaming everything in sight for the decrease in sales, they recognize that sometimes sales just slow down.

It's sad that this is surprising to see. :(

  6. Re:What about trippling on 'No Quick Fix' From Nuclear Power · · Score: 4, Interesting

Electric cars that have been put out have ranges of about 100 miles, which is plenty for most people's weekly commutes. Part of the problem, though, was that it was just relocating the pollution - instead of it coming out of your tailpipe, it was coming out of a coal power plant. Nuclear power makes that go away completely.

Nuclear power + electric commuter cars = far less carbon emissions. I'm sure many people would buy a reasonably-priced electric car as a daily driver nowadays if it were marketed well enough (and have a second gas-powered car for longer trips).

Having suffered only ~60,000 war dead, America effectively became war adverse until after the first Gulf War, and probably till this day to some extent.

To be fair, it's one thing when you abandon a war when fighting in another country, but a completely different thing when you're fighting for your own. If there were a country attempting to take the US over, I'm sure we wouldn't just roll over and let them have it after a few thousand dead.

Note that I'm not trying to defend the anti-french sentiment, I just think your statement is misleading.

  8. Re:clarify this paragraph: on U.S. Investigating Online Music Pricing · · Score: 2

My biggest fear though is the music industry gets "caught" and settles in similar fashion to their previous settlement, à la "giving away" free downloads (by the truckload) to local libraries, but restricting the downloads to non-selling tracks. Sigh.

Aren't plenty of good songs non-selling ones anyway? I'd take one New Amsterdams download before ten Britney ones. Maybe that would open people up to some new things. Now, I'm not saying that all popular music is bad, because it isn't, but there's a lot of good music out there that nobody hears, people just need a kick in the pants to be motivated to find it.

I hope Pandora becomes popular for this reason.

  17. Re:A shift in driving on In-Car Navigation Systems Too Distracting? · · Score: 4, Interesting

I have a navigational system in my car that won't let you input most things while the car is in motion. It will allow some things, like "quick stop" which will route to nearby gas stations/restaurants/hospitals, but it'll only show a total of 5 - if you want to scroll to search further, you have to stop. You can also program in any of the previous 5 destinations. The processes are easy enough that it's not a distraction, although maybe I'm just better at multitasking than most people.

What irritates me, though, is if I have a passenger in the car, they can't do anything to the nav while I'm driving. If we suddenly realize we have the wrong address while we're on the freeway? Sorry, can't change it, even though the passenger could just as well do it. I wish they had some kind of weight sensor in the seat to allow that.
