  1. Re:But does it work? on Court Orders Breathalyzer Code Opened, Reveals Mess · · Score: 5, Insightful

I'm not generally someone that insists everything needs to be open source. However, in a situation like this, where this device makes the difference between a life changing conviction and exoneration, it's pretty obvious that people should have the right to examine it. The court was able to order it opened here, but it makes you wonder how many people have been screwed by this.

Sadly in the majority of cases where evidence based on something like this (DNA, hair analysis, etc) is shown to be based on someone or something that's not good - nothing comes of it. I saw a blurb about a "forensic expert" that would give the prosecution any testimony they wanted. The state he was based in refused to reexamine the cases he was involved in even after he was shown to be a liar.

It's depressing but it's one reason I steer clear of the law as much as I can. As much as we Americans like to think of our legal system as dispensing justice, the sad fact is that it frequently doesn't.

For the most part if I come across a few unsavory things on someone's machine I'll delete it and move on. One particular time always stands out though. The guy complained about the performance of his machine. When I got on there it was absolutely packed with porn. Browser history showed that he literally spent the entire day surfing porn. I have no idea when, if ever, he did any work. Needless to say... he wasn't around for long after that.

This is particularly true for anyone that finds themselves in the media spotlight for months and is hyped as being guilty. Even if mountains of evidence ends up being used to exonerate them the damage has already been done. The media isn't going to bother to spend months clearing their name. They get a 15 second update, "John Doe was innocent." Most people never even hear it. I feel the same way about the tiny section dedicated to corrections in printed publications.

Just write a script that gives all of your music a new file extension. Like ".riaa". You haven't deleted anything and it no longer falls within the realm of material they're allowed to search for. Actually, if you're really paranoid, you could just integrate that into your logoff script. Then run the script to return them to their normal extension at your leisure when you start your machine up.

I'm tired of seeing people duped into clamoring for corporate taxes as though they'll somehow benefit from it. Can we replace everything on TV with basic economic and political education for a month? People need figure stuff like this out. I think you're missing my point. You aren't just taxing Google. You are taxing the people that are trying to advertise through Google. Which means they'll either choose to run fewer ads or they'll choose to the run the same number and make up for it by charging more for their products. People buying these products are the ones actually getting taxed.

In America income tax makes up the vast majority of government income. I would venture to guess that it's the same in the U.K. Like I said, the government is getting less money because gobs of people are unemployed / making less money. That's the way it should work. Not, "oh, so sad you're unable to pay us like you usually do, let's find a new way to tax you instead."

Exactly. It seems that politicians are always under the impression that their citizens have all of this money just laying around and no idea how to use it. Fortunately for us they know exactly how our money would be better spent! Food? Rent? Don't be ridiculous! I'm going to buy you these nifty new CCTV cameras and then build an Internet activity tracking data warehouse. It'll be great! You'll wonder how you could have ever possibly lived without them before. Odd how projects like that march on regardless of economic considerations but schools and health care are always underfunded. (and by "odd" I mean they realize that those are the only two reasons anyone will ever vote for a tax increase so they never fund them.)

The government needs to learn to live within its means. I love that a recession for everyone else means that the government just has to go looking for something else to tax. Well, sorry, that's not the way it works. We aren't making money and that's why you aren't getting any money yourself. So either take a pay cut, fire some of those useless sods that are just taking up space or figure out how to repair the economy. Taking more of our money is not an option.

(Yes, I said, "our" money. What, you don't think Google will just increase advertising rates to compensate for the tax? You can't tax business. There's no such thing. The cost is always just passed down through the goods that are ultimately purchased by the consumer.)

Usually when a server empties like that, it's due to one person starting a GCH (Game Changing Hack). Like "Cartillery" in BF2. It can destroy a server, and people will not come back for hours.

Oh, sure, I've seen people clear out because of hacks but the servers I play on generally have pretty active admins. Hackers are rarely a reason for the server to clear out where I play. People get kicked/banned/reported or votebanned before they annoy anyone to the point that the server is ruined.

EQ reminds me of a similar story I have about SubSpace (Continuum). I come back to that game every year and a half or so and I always get addicted to it all over again. It's simple to pick up, tough to master and the community is quite fun. It's been around since the 90's and it's still one of my favorite games of all time. It was massively multiplayer using dial-up modems long before MMO became part of the gamer vernacular.

The hard part is reaching and maintaining that critical mass. You see this with a lot of FPS servers. Most of the servers you see are either within a few players of capacity or completely empty. You don't find too many people playing on a server with only a handful of others. I've seen servers just suddenly empty when numbers drop below about 2/3 of capacity. It's like suddenly everyone decides the server is dying and they just move on to a new one.

If the same psychology applies to MMOs they're going to have to work hard to keep people coming back.
