This is a perfect example of why that 30 Rock episode with the fireworks was so hilarious. Sheeple aren't that smart. It doesn't take much to startle them.
Because the standards are never standard. No one ever actually perfectly adheres to the standards and that makes development suck and users suffer. Even worse, people add on to the standards and then developers actually use that crap that's been tacked on - Before you know it you're locked in just like you were before. That and you have an awesomely splintered codebase where you've got custom code all over the place to take advantage of the "enhancements" one OS has that another doesn't.
Last but not least - you have the situations where you come across bugs in the actual API you're programming against. Now you've got special code to deviate from the standard / code around that bug for just that OS.
I'm not going to say that I wouldn't love to see it happen (I really would) but I will say that I have serious doubts that it ever will.
Wanted to link that pic of the Iraq guy at the press conference, obviously lying, with his hands in a "simmer down" gesture, but I can't find it. Maybe it wasn't Iraq. I dunno. Someone find it.
Seriously! I gave up shopping anywhere other than newegg when I moved to a small town. I'll wander around an electronics store for fun if I go to the city but I buy everything from newegg now. The few times I've compared prices on big ticket items newegg has always been cheaper anyway.
I'm a huge proponent of small government but I actually agree wholeheartedly with this argument. Particularly when you're doing this at the city level. This is a small community (of 50,000) that obviously agreed this was the right decision for them. This sort of project is a large undertaking and I'm sure everyone had an opportunity to voice their opinion. If a monopoly is completely screwing your town over there's no reason you shouldn't be able to organize yourselves and roll your own solution.
What's happening at the state level where TWC is manipulating the law to prevent this is actually a perfect example of how broken government is the higher up you get.
Long before worrying about that I'd be worrying about whether many guys will actually get to use this stuff. The things you read about in Popular Science and hear about on tech news sites don't reach every guy on the ground. Every time I ask my friends on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan about stuff like this they just laugh themselves silly.
Bill's strong point was always the fact that he was a shrewd businessman. His tactics obviously weren't always friendly but you can't deny that he created an incredibly powerful company in a relatively short period of time. I am, however, looking forward to seeing more time spent on technology and less time spent sidelining competitors.
I got screwed the same way. I asked for STP and got UTP CAT 6 instead. I even asked the guy before he started the pull if it was running STP just to make sure. He said it was and sadly I just took his word for it. It wasn't until after he'd left and I started punching down my terminals (I can do that myself, I don't need to pay for it.) that I realized it wasn't STP. Needless to say, I wasn't happy. Unfortunately, their attitude was that it was my problem and it wouldn't make a difference anyway. Well... I consistently have trouble getting that CAT 6 to run at gigabit speeds now because it's run right next to powerlines. Ugh.
Yeah, we've had network cables fail. Even patch cables. It's rare, but it happens. If you get the chance you might as well replace your cabling. Besides, regular CAT 5 isn't going to get you over 100Mbs - and that's no fun.
You may have a point about Octopussy... but at one point he's surfing on a wave that looks like it came out of a super nintendo game... it's just plain awful.
Given that they're using this on a hurricane, I don't think getting boats out of the way will be an issue. I'm pretty sure the storm itself is enough to dissuade anyone from being in the general vicinity.
Yeah, we're going to have warp engines by then and be casually flying to and from our vacation homes on the moon too. (Oh Popular Science in the 50's, you are so funny now.)
with this technology you have a sound basis for a middling james bond movie cum car commercial involving halle berry, icelandic henchman, and rogue north korean generals
A.K.A. one of the worst Bond movies ever. The premise was insane, the CGI was absolutely awful and the locations were ridiculous. It made me miss the old Bond movies. Thank God Casino Royale brought us back to something resembling reality.

Yeah, the improved file system didn't even make it into 7. Ugh.

This is by far the best thing I've ever seen in Idle.
Simple YouTube video demo then? Too much to ask? Ok...

You're 2/2. Where are my bloody mod points when I need them...
This. Just. In. There's a markup on retail goods! Also, the sky is generally blue and you need oxygen to live.
Slashdot has articles? Is that one of the new features along with the whole AJAXy discussion system?

Shoot man... when I was a kid in the ghetto hobo vomit was just another way of saying slip-n-slide.
Yeah, that's what happens when you have a, "shiny bomb-casing filled with used pinball machine parts."

Steam shovel beats everything!
I absolutely agree. You're not alone in this feeling. Penny Arcade said it best.
