I would not have as much of an issue with this plan IF they allowed public access to the stored data so we could snoop on the Politicians, DA's and Judges just as much as they will snoop on us.

I couldn't imagine running an on-line business and not having some sort of back-up plan in place in case the US government did make a mistake or just decided to seize my registrars servers for some reason.

Full disclosure before I continue....I run 2 of the Cesidian Root Servers

I also know that as long as my site has an IP address and a net connection my "customers" and the rest of the Internet will be able to access my systems. I am NOT dependent on ANY US based ICANN root server to keep my sites on-line and my business operating and/or making a profit.
I often wonder if ANY shareholders are aware of these critical flaws in nearly all companies on-line infrastructure !!....once those caches time-out your on-line
business is DEAD...period!...NO DNS = No more money to PAY CEO's bonuses and to pay dividends to shareholders.
How much has your company spent on back-up systems and redundant net links? will any of it matter if your customers can't reach the site? I would sure hate
to be the head of an IT department if my domains got pulled and the CEO, Board of Directors, shareholders and customers couldn't get their e-mail

The Cesidian Root was crucial in keeping the wikileaks.org domain on-line after the seizure and since we have root servers world-wide now, no government
can take down any domain or TLD we serve.
We also offer TLD's that you won't find available on any ICANN server and if you really need it we can provide you with a custom TLD.

I'm not suggesting that my way is the only way but, after seeing the "bandwidth" monitoring on my DD-WRT enabled wireless routers( I have several) I wasn't really impressed. They don't track overall usage for very long and they don't track different types of traffic at all. They also don't differentiate between IP's.

Bandwidthd does track usage for up to a year, and months and weeks and days and tracks different types of traffic and tracks by IP address as well as the whole LAN.
It also was a great place to setup a firewall since all traffic on the LAN passes through this box now so I wanted a system with a bit more power and reliability than
a basic Linksys wireless router running on flash ram.

I'm sure there are several other ways to do this too.

Build your own "meter" ... Setup a cheap little spare box with 2 nic cards in bridged mode. They will not require a Real IP address so anyone can set this up!! Then just install bandwidthd and Apache2. It may not be perfect but, at least YOU will know about what your usage is and have something to show to back you up.

I've had this setup for years now and Thankfully I've never needed it...sure nice to know what my systems are doing bandwidth wise though!!

Doubt anyone here would need it it but, if someone does need some help with this setup feel free to email me.
