I've never seen an in-car GPS system where you couldn't hit some sort of menu button and then select "view map" that, while not at smooth and feature-rich as GMaps, worked perfectly well for viewing the path of travel and surrounding area. I love GMaps and use it all the time (generally reviewing and committing the directions to memory), but tell me what happens when you've got no cell signal and the GPS signal flips out thus causing a recalculation. Personally, I use Google when I have it, but have GPS maps loaded to my phone's SD card as a backup.

  3. Re:So what eBook to buy? on Apple eBook Rules Changing For Sellers · · Score: 1

You're mis-reading it. Example: They're requiring Amazon to allow purchase through the app, and any purchases made through the app can only use Apple's merchant setup, which takes a 30% commission on every sale (which is more than the profit margin at the moment if I remember correctly). Right now, the app opens the browser to the Amazon page where you buy the eBook from Amazon with your Amazon account and credit card.

While Apple is unifying the payment scheme for all purchases made on an iDevice, they're taking a LARGE cut which is going to drive prices way up and generally not allowing you access to a simple on-device method to purchase things outside of their market.

So the guy(s) that organized everything and told others what was needed from each part to create a greater whole owes his riches to those who only perform one job? If someone agrees to work for X, I owe them X+Y if their work allows me to profit? The entire economy is based on taking a product at one level, combining it with others or modifying it and selling it to a level closer to the consumer for a profit (regardless of what the product is). If I buy 300 widgets from you, and 300 widget mounts from someone else, and sell a kit for (Cw + Cm) * 1.5 I don't owe you or the other manufacturer anything beyond the original cost unless you've stated otherwise in the sales contract. If you want your job to pay you extra for company profits, find one that offers stock options. As it is you, as an employee, take zero risk on losing money if the company fails and so should have no expectation of additional gains if the company profits. You get paid X for product Z (being your specialty knowledge or work).

Point is, Google isn't banning the app, nor is it trying to hide the app. Google is merely declining to distribute it via their market because they want to know what's in the programs in their market and you can't do that with something that downloads and runs executable code after the fact. They built in functionality specifically so you can side-load the app if you want, either by downloading it directly on the phone via URL, moving it to the phone via data cable, or, if you're really lazy, you can take a picture of a scan code on the screen and the phone will bring up the apk and all you have to do is click install. They put the choice firmly in the users' hands, regardless of what they allow on their specific market.

Don't like it? Write your own market app. Allow whatever you want in there. It's only a database search GUI and an app loader program.

Protip: Criminals will use whatever weapons they can get, including illegal ones. And if you think guns for defense is a myth, tell that the people saved every year when they shoot the stronger and healthier idiot trying to harm them. People can be evil. Not all criminals and sociopaths are violent because they "had a bad upbringing" or are in "a bad place in their life." Some are just plain evil and take pleasure in harming others or taking what they haven't earned. If that person is stronger than you, your defense against their will involves countering their violence with something that puts you on par with them regardless of physical stature; enter the firearm. There's a reason they say a Democrat is a Republican that hasn't been mugged yet (note: I'm neither).
