If Slashdot did move to FreeBSD, then lame remarks such as "now only if we can get linux to run on it!" would have to be changed to "now only if we can get FreeBSD to run on it!"
This brings up another quick question which may help find the answer to why it is happening to begin with. Why is this happening in America and not in other countries? Now, I am sure that similar incidents have happened in other countries, but why so much more often in America?
One thing that comes to mind if the amount of differences between students in the states. Most other countries have a bonding religion, ethics, moral beliefs etc. that are just not found in the U.S. Could it be America's diversity that causes these things to happen? What other explinations could there be?
While the web pages can list the names and adresses of the doctors that preform abortions, if the doctors asked to be removed the site MUST LEGALLY remove their names and addresses off the site. Failure to do so would be a lawsuite the site operators would lose.
Also, sure these people/sites can LEGALLY celebrate when one of the doctors is hurt or killed from the list, it is obviously morally wrong to praise the death of anyone. (well.. except Jesus I suppose:)
My 2 cents.
How much of this story is actually news, and how much of it is just advertising and awarence of Transmeta???
I'd put money down saying Transmeta posted this article.;-)
Lets not get all upset about every peice of information gathering companies do. Chances are they aren't even logging IPs or anything, but want to know which bookmarks most people use and which ones they don't. This way they can tune the bookmarks to make them more useful for the average web browser.
sure these fans and ducts will cool the inside, but it just means that the pc will exhaust more heat. It does not help out with any external PC heat problems.
you just don't get it! everything runs better/is cooler with linux on it! What's so hard to understand about that?
Example: Anonymous Coward writes There's a cool new toy on the market. Everyone should get it, it rocks! I only wish i could get linux to run on it, anyone think that's possible!?!
You see? It doesn't matter whether it makes since to put it on the device, or if it would be usable at all. The only thing that matters is that linux can run on it!
Auditing is not only to detect breakins or suspicious behaviour, but also to trace every major system change. These logs need to be provided during investigations, or can be used to simply check up on a person whom there are suspisions about.
From the FAQ section, tt looks like this version must be installed on your windows C: drive, and you must have at least 500 MB free on that drive for it.
Seems a little restrictive to me. I know i don't have 500MB free space laying around on my C: drive.
I think being Unix has a lot to do with it's roots, it's look, it's feel, and the tools available. For example, they all have similiar file systems in regards to structure and permissions. Many basic concepts as these exist in all the unix flavors.
I think they haven't had their success because of the need for them to run as root. This will stop most viruses. Sure, some viruses may go around in the Linux world, but as for a virus to spread, it needs to be able to jump from one infected machine to another. This is easy in the windows world because of the large number of windows users, and the popularity of programs such as outlook express, IE, and MS office. Also, in the windows world there's no need to be a special account to do real damage(even NT). Put these reasons together and you'll have the answer to why Linux viruses haven't spread much. If Linux does get a lot more popular in the newbie desktop arena, and programs become more standardized across the board, a virus threat is a difinite possibility. I think we're pretty safe. For now.
How can you have an Ivy college without walls for the Ivy to grow on? :)
This type of restriction is already being used...

The geographic restrictions that iCraveTV are talking about are already being used here in the US, albeit probably implemented in a different fashion that iCraveTV intends to do. Most noticeably would be the encryption programs available. Netscape and Microsoft used IP reverse lookup to insure that the person is indeed coming from a US domain. On another note, could this be the end of the "WORLD" wide web? Maybe we're moving back to a NWW(Nation Wide Web) just a thought...
Well, if you lived in wisconsin you would know that the Onion is not just an only zine. I believe it originated as a printed zine, not an online one. It's been around in printed form for a long time, and can be found around college campuses and in news stands in wisconsin (possibly other states, but i know for sure in wisconsin). They also have radio news here in milwaukee:) just a little fyi -knowfear
I don't know why this comes as such surprising news to us all. I mean, it's china. they've been surpressing human rights for a long time now. This is nothing new to red china.
I agree, most hard core techies have 100's devices cluttering their cases(a little exaggeration). Sure, you can fit lots of this into the mid-towers, but at the price of high case temperatures. Oh yeah, and why do companies with full size towers put the floppy drive on the top of the case?? I don't think my FDD cable could ever read so high.
I maybe wrong, but it's my understanding that many techies are educated (college). Being educated, we can usually make good decisions about law, where as a lawyer who is educated in law may not know much about the technology out there.
Logical thinking can usually create good decisions, but it doesn't help non-techies understand concepts way above their head.

This would make sense to me, anyways...
I wonder how long it will take for Apple to sue Nintendo for "stealing" their cube design.
Are there any free email clients available for linux and/or windows that has support for outlook/exchange email servers?

sure. on the site it states they will be available in the fall for consumers.

You wouldn't necessarily have to unplug everything every time. You could use a docking station for easy removal/connecting to the peripherals

Are the future linux IPOs going to be as strong as the earlier ones?
Maybe the overpricing of these stocks won't continue...

I was wondering if someone else would point out apple's little spelling error there. you think we should let them know??
