The best part is, presumably the school administrators started their tirade thinking they were preventing another school shooting. What I don't understand is, how does strong arming him into taking down the videos make the school safer? Youtube videos never shot anyone (to my knowledge). How does intimidating students who speak out in support of his free speech rights with petitions keep students safe?
If they were concerned for his safety, then privately calling the police and a psychologist to assess him would have been appropriate. I'm not sure how a media shit storm affects school safety, but I'm going to go ahead and guess that any potential effects are not in the positive direction.
This is ridiculous. Feel free to contact the administrators and tell them all about the Streisand Effect: http://wilson.ddsbschools.ca/contact-3.html DonaldAWilson_SS@durham.edu.on.ca
The best part, I might add, is that there is nothing "better" about private schools except the mental image society collectively has. The only reason private school students do better is because they are selected for nice things more frequently because of their prestigious background. In fact, I would argue that private school teaching is probably inferior to public schools (at least in Canada); private school teachers are paid significantly less than public schools, and so public schools get their pick first.
The only reason private school students do better on standardized tests is because private schools pick all of the best students with supportive parents. If you have a class who can practically teach themselves, it doesn't matter if a monkey is teaching them, they're going to do better than the class of low income and disenfranchised students.
It's not that insightful. Presumably most American trained physicians took the SATs. I guess it should be criminal to cheat on those too. Also, I assume most physicians went to high school. It should be a criminal offence to cheat in high school. And middle school, and elementary school.
The MCAT has exactly zero medical content. It tests verbal reasoning, physics, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, [basic] biology and written output. The MCAT does not qualify you in any way, shape or form to practice medicine.
No one is saying it right to cheat. But if you want to make it a criminal offence to cheat some times but not others, at least understand when and where you draw the line.
I know, right? I mean, before he was just the world's most notorious terrorist. But now, not only is he a pervert but he's a PIRATE! I knew there was a link between illegal downloading and terrorism!!
I was thinking we could send up a satellite with a giant gun thingy, and then give it internet connectivity and hook it up to a flash game. We could call it "asteroids" and get internet users to fix the problem.
I feel like we have this exact same conversation every time Facebook is mentioned. It would be really interesting to cross section the first 10 posts of every Facebook related submissions.
Exactly: I don't see this as having to be a big complicated conspiracy theory. I'm sure they are trying to cash in on a psychological phenomenon as well as solve the problem of which universal currency to use. However, a little self control on the part of the consumer completely negates the problem. Be okay with having a little bit of money left over in your account for another future purchase. Yes they probably use it as capital, but it's not like you were going to make that much money off of 2-3 dollars, so take a deep breath.
If it's so valuable, how about they start a service where they pay for it directly. You sign up, and you get x dollars every day you let them track your location data.
A better approach is to put language in the funding contract stating that the money can only be used to produce research into the public domain. Funding is upstream, and such language trumps labs from giving away rights they don't have. If the researchers don't like it, they can find funding elsewhere. Eventually, the publications would have to adapt, as they'd find fewer and fewer big names publish.
From the funder's (AKA taxpayer's) perspective, this is a perfectly reasonable approach and outcome. Naturally, the payer should have free access to the thing for which they paid.
Surely any beer can be consumed in space, right? Wrong. Not only would the launch costs be astronomical to get a crate of Stella into orbit, it's a physical impracticality to consume any carbonated beverage in space.
Why? Zero-G has a rather nasty side effect of the "wet burp" phenomenon.
Think about it, what happens when you swallow a mouthful of beer on Earth? It goes down your throat and sits in your stomach. Gravity ensures the fluid stays in your stomach, allowing the carbon dioxide bubbles to expand and rise to the top of the fluid. You can then sit back and let out an impressive burp to impress your friends as the carbon dioxide is vented out of your mouth.
Now try doing that in space.
There's little gravity to keep the fluid in your stomach, but you still need to vent that carbon dioxide that is expanding inside your belly. You try to burp.... but you end up venting the carbon dioxide, beer, and whatever else was inside your stomach through your mouth and nose. This, my friends, is called a "wet burp"; an explosive near-vomit experience guaranteed to gross out anyone who has the misfortune to be floating around with you.
If you do a fly by, doesn't that give you only a matter of hours to pass through the solar system and do what you want? If light take 8 minutes to reach the Earth, and this is about 0.12c, then presumably a 50 year trip becomes less than a day of visiting time?
Granted, research is being conducted before entering the solar system and presumably in the years after passing through. But in principle, it seems so fleeting.

Also, resistance if futile.

I'm on a university connection and I can access the pirate bay just fine.

Sure rate me down...cause religion never slips into otherwise unrelated classes in Texas (or elsewhere).
A part of me feels like this article was submitted primarily as an excuse to use the word 'fracking.'

The appropriate response is: "You can either have an opt-out system, or an opt-in system. Which would you prefer?"
I think fire would leave carbon on the instruments. Boiling at atmospheric pressure is insufficient (100 C is insufficient for sterilization).
From Wikipedia: "To achieve sterility, a holding time of at least 15 minutes at 121 C (250 F) or 3 minutes at 134 C (273 F) is required."

The numbers vary by method, but I think the principle remains. Many pathogens have spore forms which are incredibly heat resistant.
But but...Wikileaks is bad! Don't question my 'evidence!'

And that makes me think of the wet burp:

I thought he was alluding to Microsoft's fear of open source. That is, "Begin Microsoft's bashing of Yahoo for going open source in 5...4...3..."
But I could be wrong, I don't really speak troll.
So, let's stop demonizing people here.
