No I think the GP's argument makes sense even if the words he uses make it sound horrible. The person who would give up their life to protect others is doing it because they would rather protect others than live to see them die. At a lower level, they're doing what pleases themselves - "selfish" isn't really the right word.

Automobiles are a unique situation. The law that makes you responsible if somebody commits a crime with your car applies ONLY to cars. It doesn't apply to ANYTHING else.

If I loan you a gun, for legitimate reasons (or so I thought), and you go out and kill somebody with it, I am NOT legally responsible.

If you lend someone a vehicle and they kill with it it's your fault, but if you lend someone a weapon and they kill with it, it's not? Vehicles are the things that carry this special liability? Further proof that the legal system is nuts.

This. The supposed universal influence of supply and demand is a big load of idealism, it's very rare to see the effect on consumer goods. Usually any gains to be had in supply/demand effects are extracted in B2B transactions at the raw material to minor component level. The true arbiter of price in capitalism that's relevant to consumers is "what the market will bear."
