Until an open-source product has features like that, we'll be beholden to Oracle. I think this is a great idea/opportunity for OSS.

I generally agree, but I think it is more accurate to say that it is not ready for the *average* user's desktop. Personally, I love it and use it on my workstation at home, but I know that it would not be appropriate for my Mom (not yet). However, the great thing about Linux is that it is progressing by leaps and bounds, and someday it may be ready... IF there are good tools for configuration, etc. My mom would freak if she had to edit a dotfile. Also, people have to be willing to give up Word, etc., and try out one of the alternatives. Umm...no graphical file managers? Weird, I could have sworn I fired up kfm last night, and gmc the night before that. Rather that "typing a file name into a command-line interface", I actually clicked on a folder, and it showed me the contents. It even worked for tarballs. I guess it must have been a figment of my imagination, though.

OK, this is not a troll, just my opinion, BUT... So far, it seems like there is a lot of unwarranted hype about Eazel. Yes, they have ex-HIG members, but I have to say I'm not impresssed with the design that's in the screenshots so far. Granted, they have only begun recently, and given the pace of Linux development, and the talent involved, it may turn out to be something really cool. I hope so. For now, I think that Konqueror is looking a bit more promising. The screenshots at mosfet.org are very impressive - he's got one where he's viewing all sorts of things at once (a .dvi doc, a PostScript doc, a gopher listing, and a FTP site). I don't use the GNOME or KDE panels - I like my Blackbox root menu just fine, thank you - but sometimes I want a nice graphical file manager, and so far I like the way Konqueror is coming along. It is nice to have the competition from Nautilus; I think the reason that both projects are moving along so well is the competition.

As for a standard... I hate it when things are forced on me. The great thing about Linux is choice - your choice of window manager, desktop environment (if you want one), or just a console. Don't force GNOME, or KDE, or anything else on me - I'm perfectly capable of choosing. The need is not for a "standard", but for more innovative interfaces. When you standardize, innovation is stifled. I've yet to see much REAL innovation in desktops lately, in ANY operating system. How about a new desktop paradigm, people? I was hoping OSX might provide this, but I think not. Anyway, just my $0.02; you may feel differently.

Personally, I have never tried what most Americans would consider to be "drugs" - marijuana, etc. But then, I started thinking of all those nights at the bar...drinking to forget about the week's events...drinking to feel "good", enjoying the way that you suddenly start to feel affection for those around you, as though this is the way life is really supposed to be. Then Monday rolls around, and it's back to the grind of the "real" world. I think that everyone secretly yearns for those moments "under the influence". What does it mean when we look to drugs to feel good? It doesn't matter if the drug is alcohol, or Prozac, or pot. What does that say about the world? We all use, to some extent, to enter a world that is much closer to the one in our dreams, the one where everyone is friendly and loving, and everything is OK. Monday through Friday afternoon, we're just in denial.

Of course, I'm sure it won't be long before someone writes the necessary program. I really hate it when cool products come out with support for Windows only. That's not the only OS out there, people... It seems to me that the revenue they could make by adding Linux support, etc., would far outweigh the minimal cost of porting the download software. I don't see this as Bruce Perens' fault, but Slashdot's. And yet, Robin is quick to dismiss this, and even inform us that he "growled" at Hemos for posting an apology. First off, where does Robin get the right to growl at Hemos? Hemos was here long before Robin ever was - Robin just came on board when Andover took over. Am I the only one who detects a note of arrogance in some of Robin's many editorials? Yes, yes, I know, if I don't like it, I don't have to read Slashdot. All I can say is, if I were Hemos, I don't think I would tolerate any "growling" from Robin's direction. The way Robin's long-winded editorials keep popping up (like the one about how to get women - how sickening was that), you'd think this will soon be Roblimo.Net. I miss the old /.

Some even go as far as saying jocks are big, dumb, and shallow. That's just a point I'd like to mention, I can't make any assumptions about it, or I'd be stereotyping.
I think one factor that caused the Colorado kid's to go over the edge (from what i've seen and heard, which still isn't a clear picture on what happened accurately) is society as a whole. I mean, people just keep blaming and pointing at the media, the movies, the games, the internet, the parents, or how we should go back to Christianity, and all those things. Everyone has some blame in this. Either that or perhaps what some of what people are saying are right.
Another thing, why do people always have to point out what's different between them. Rich, poor, Atheist, Christian,Muslim,Buddhist,Jewish,Hindu(sorry for any religion i haven't named; oh ya, let's not forget agnostic; my belief!), popular, geeky, tall, short, fat, thin. I mean we are all human beings. (I know this is kind of an assumption) .
I used to get picked on alot, and one time I got into a fight, but now in high school i don't get picked on much. I mean sure I still get insulted because of my weight, and my uncanny ability to annoy people, but I don't do anything. Why? For one thing, I'm a pacifist. Also, sometimes I think to myself: Maybe this person's blowing off steam after a bad incident, and this is his way of venting anger. If I react in what he perceives in a negative way I might be in a worse situation that I am now.
My views might not be valid, because I've never experienced the some of the bad stuff some go through. That's why I can't say I'll back these ideas, but I'll always try.
