Buddhist cultures like Thailand or Cambodia, the reincarnation religions combined with life being cheap, easy for them to justify what we westerns consider absolutely stupid behaviour (Driving is the first thing that comes to mind) with "it OK, I come back, next life".

I guess that depends on an individual's perspective, but the general consensus among Buddhists I've spoken to is that one should consider themselves very fortunate to be born a human, as it is in this form we have one of the rare opportunities to achieve enlightenment and break the perpetual cycle of rebirth and suffering. Depending on how you lived your life, the chances of just "coming back" next life are very slim.

I'm an iPhone owner, and I've dropped mine on concrete about on 3 different occasions and while it has a few scratches on the back, it still works perfectly fine. I think it all depends on exactly how you hit it. I don't really have any doubt that BBs are a bit tougher, but iPhones aren't that fragile.

I agree. Apple has, with iTunes plus, shown that it is more than happy to distribute DRM-free music. I believe it is the record industry that it forcing the copy protection on the music. Apple has, at least in some sense, done a lot by changing the status quo and working against the wishes of the recording industry (like keeping prices at a somewhat reasonable 99 cents and allowing people to have content indefinitely instead of renting).

I stand fairly neutral on the issue. However, I find it sort of surprising that there are people (like the one that made this video) that are so sure the westerners are the holders and users of false information, but don't ever consider that the PRC government (well known for it censorship tactics) could be the source of just as much false or misleading information. IMHO, China accusing the US of spreading lies is kind of like the desert talking to the grain of sand.

  13. The Underlying Cause on Discussion of Internet Addiction as Mental Illness Resurfaces · · Score: 1

I think the real reason we see things like this popping up is generally because there are a lot of people that don't understand those of us who spend a lot of time online. I'm sure that there are some people that do have a serious problem (wasn't there a couple that let their child starve because they couldn't get off of WoW)...but mostly, I believe the internet just hasn't been accepted by some as a valid hobby. If the individuals that are labeled as being addicted to the internet instead spent the same time on composing music or racing cars or whatnot, they may be labeled as eccentric, but certainly not mentally ill.

I don't have a great amount of experience with this particular part of OS history, but from my experiences in my school's computer lab, when they upgraded the iMacs from OS 9 to OS X, they became more responsive, crashed significantly less, and ran overall faster. The same couldn't be said for the computers I saw upgraded to vista. When I upgraded my laptop (an original MacBook Pro) from Tiger to Leopard, its performance noticeably increased, despite the fact that it was not apple's top of the line anymore. Apple's upgrades generally seem to increase performance across the board but Microsoft's just target the latest and greatest. But I am only speaking from my own experience. Yours may be different and I could be wrong.

  24. C is overkill for most people on Followup On Java As "Damaging" To Students · · Score: 5, Insightful

At the University of Washington, where I am a student, the introduction programming courses teach Java. These courses seem to serve two purposes. A number of majors outside of computer science require them for the general background knowledge of how computer languages work. They also are prerequisites to entering a CS major, so they serve to weed out people who really don't belong in a technical major. Although I don't care much for Java itself, there are a number of benefits to using it in these introductory classes. First of all, when you're working with a bunch of noobs, it is really nice to have the platform independence that Java offers. Secondly, all of the libraries, at least from my experience, are extremely well documented. But most of all, most of the people that take an introductory programming course won't ever reach the level of sophistication that C requires, so teaching C would be kind of overkill. And those of us who really will continue on to work requiring C, really shouldn't have a problem learning it.
