You got all of that from "For and on behalf of Non-Americans: WTF?"
From your usage of "lame-duck" (this word, it does not mean...), it comes as no surprise that you don't see another layer of "politician" that covers all parties. It's an old principle of power to find ways of turning the constituents against each other and it looks like you've fallen for the partisan bait.
I'd much rather explain to my kid that I don't have time to play with him because I'm making money to help put him through college than explain how I'm ignoring him so that that stuff I'm working on can be used by a bunch of strangers who want to use a free OS.
Well, that's certainly a value judgement. Self-interest vs. altruism, and all that.
While that might seem like a good solution on the surface, it doesn't work well in the grey areas where the authorities weren't acting in bad faith per se; the police officer might have thought that he was conducting a legal search, or had reasonable cause to enter, but on further review it was found that he didn't. There are a lot of situations I can think of, where the police officer shouldn't be punished, but the evidence found shouldn't be admissible either. The situation isn't always as cut-and-dried as some guy beating a confession out of somebody.
Wait, are you saying that ignorance of the law is no excuse, except under the color of authority?
Steve Martin once had a bit: "I forgot! Your honor, I forgot armed robbery was against the law."
Sorry, but these are the people whose jobs it is to know the laws they're enforcing. Their entire job. Well actually, that and filling out forms. Like many citizens, I have higher standards than what occurs in the day to day world, but simply building in an excuse for one occupation to break the law (the Bill of Rights, even) is pretty lame.
It is a research organization within Microsoft. MSR researchers pursue curiosity-driven research and publish in the normal academic channels.
I'm a fan of research for research's sake, but it seems a bit weird for them to announce how many academics they're employing. Possibly archly cynical, but might this just be an embrace and extend on CS brainpower? Keeping the high-powered CS people from doing any work for other companies (as part of product dev, natch)?
There's a huge, huge, huge percentage of the computing world who's happy with Microsoft and would never DREAM of trying something else.
There's a huge, huge, huge percentage of those people who don't really care what's on the computer. If it was OSX they'd learn to do the three things they do there and go on with their day. Microsoft themselves are irrelevant to most of their customers because most of their users do not dream about computer operating systems. Coincidentally, this is also why the Linux desktop battle will not be waged in any overt way. The choice between them is simply not interesting enough for anybody who would do the choosing, somewhat akin to preferring to change the channel using the up key vs. the down key.
these sorts of people are allowed to be called "liberal" when in reality all they are is authoritarian.
Like race, gender and religion, authoritarianism exists outside of political leanings. Power of all stripes has sought to enforce its ideology over their constituencies. Authoritarianism is a particular technique for the application of ideology to society at large, the only difference being who its victims are.
Ah ha ha, I have to laugh at the Anonymous Defender factor in this story! Why don't you estimate how much money Gracenote saved by not having to start over from scratch when they went closed?
If Ken Mehlman resigns from the RNC Chair, it's not because he may or may not take it in the ass, it's because he was the chair when the whole party took it in the ass on election day.
I wouldn't get too giddy. Party chairs rarely last more than one election cycle.

And if you vote Democrat, are you actually voting for anything in particular or just voting "Not Republican"? That seems to have been their platform for a while. No actual plans or anything.
Have people not finally come to the realization that, yes the world is warming, the only real debate is whether or not man is directly responsible for it.
The important thing is that we come to a unified conclusion as soon as possible. Once we know what/who to blame then each of us will have our relative quotient of blame assigned and we can go on to the next drama.
All this is, is an annoying way to "educate" (i use this lightly) people who don't know about how microsoft junk is being licensed. Aside for the phone call, you'll be able to do whatever with your CD... this is just for show more than anything else.
And what do you think Windows users will be subject to once they become accustomed to calling Mommy Microsoft for permission every time they change something on their computer? Think they might start tightening things up a little?
What I don't get is ever time a new version of FF comes out, you get people bitching that there extensions are not compatible. The extension compatibility issues have nothing to do with the Firefox developers, its the extension developers that have not timely released there code, bitch at them.
Exactly. This has been the case back to 1.0 (and probably before). Every time a minor revision comes out there are broken extensions. You can see this in the extension browser where they have to specify the versions the extension is compatible with. I imagine the API has shifted a lot in 1.x and there's no reason why 2.0 would be any different.

Funny how a problematic rationale sounds pretty good when the shoe is on the other foot, eh?

Opera's M2 mail client (a part of their browser) was doing that years ago
Further solidifying their claim to be the betamax of browsers.

If this perp assaulted an officer before the video clip started, then by all means is heavy force required.
Despite what you think, the situation you describe is incredibly illegal pretty much everywhere besides Iraq.
Although they tried some scare tactics on freedb once or twice with
their patents, all of the time Gracenote played fair with freedb.
What an idiotic thing to say.
Either way, that wasn't all that brutal, at least he wasn't hitting the dude with his mag-light.
I'm sure choosing the nickname "Sergeat Slaughter" has nothing to do with your authoritarian attitude toward law enforcement.

Where does he mention vagrants?
I'm getting ready to do just this. There are a variety of howto's for diskless mythtv frontends if you spend some time on the Google.

Jack Thompson must have had some severely traumatizing experience with video games as a child.
Maybe he had a brother that played too much pacman, chowed down on some pills and then ate his mother.
Possibly, but while most of us were playing Pac Man, Mr. Thompson was already busy going after rap music.
Yes, AskSlashdot has become a (if you can believe it) low-rent version of ask.metafilter.com.
Next up: "How do I start a porn/youtube/google site?"
c'mon guys, that one's funny.
