bad horror is cheaper to replay rather than producing your own programming. scifi channel couldn't afford a program like farscape, so it's doubtful they will do too much unique programming...
why not videos being made on the spot? you can do the mixing live like on telecasts. at the end of the show, tapes can be produced and sold. if dvd burners would speed up a little more, they could also be used...
another factor that businesses are concerned w/ is security. tossing a bunch of laptops out to all of your employees with wireless capabilities and no real wireless security solution is not smart or responsible... and wep isn't a solution. all eyes on wpa for that one, hopefully. wifi equipped laptops are currently something of a double edged sword in the business world.
another thing is that intel's onboard solutions will very likely be plain vanilla, featureless and lacking options that you would find in competitors solutions...
first of all saddam could easily avert a war by cutting the shit. his people are so scared of him that most of them will do whatever he says for fear of the horrible consequences. his people are hardly irrelevent as he has before and will continue to use his them to shield himself. there is a difference between leading your nation for the better good of the people and leading your nation for the better good of yourself...
vote with your wallet by buying and encouraging others to buy the special editions of movies and not purchase the first run discs. and write the studios to tell them to knock it off.
yeah i was thinking the same thing about xmen 1.5 but i think it is different. the original xmen disc barely had any extras, whereas the xmen 1.5 disc is more of a special edition...
the vectrex was a console way before its time. while there were arcade systems that did vecter graphics at the time, nobody brought them into your home. unfortunately vectrex didn't really succeed at this either. add speed, texturing and more advanced sound capabilities and you've got the shell of a very very basic ps1...
actually, the jag had the best non-pc port of doom for those w/o computers... it had a number of enhancements over the pc version (but of course lacked any expansion capabilities).
you are making the assumption that people are actually cycling these batteries...
most people i knew at college left their computers plugged in (with the battery installed). a lot of laptop battery chargers don't have the circuitry to do 'smart charging'.
instead, they will continually charge a battery whether it is at 90% or 9% full, and lower its lifespan (this is true of nicad batts especially). it also heats batteries up which isn't very good for them either. i often suggested to friends that if they are using their laptop like a desktop and rarely pack it up to go, to take the battery out and leave it plugged in...
on a related note, my girlfriend has an hp omnibook xe2 that has similar problems, but in its case, the notebook will power off when it hits around 25% without warning you that the battery is low (even though 25% is more than enough to keep it running for a long time). the battery monitoring circuit on that model is bad and reports to the laptop an erroneous voltage...
i have an even lower user number and while i'm not surprised, i am increasingly saddened by the lack of editorial quality that has increased and persists on slashdot...
the editors aren't totally to blame as (for example) the stories that are run are user submitted 99% of the time, so a lot of the same dumbasses that bitch about dupes are also submitting them. however an editor should recognize those stories for what they are and not run them...
i suppose that is what happens when a geek hobby site turns into a business; your audience starts expecting a little professionalism. even with my gripes however, i still keep coming back...;P

it is funny how people deem the ethics of amazon to be worse than the ethics of barnes and noble putting small local booksellers out of business...
while i wholeheartedly agree that patenting things like genes seems obviously public domain and incredibly prior art, there is a bigger issue at hand... money.
several people in my family are scientists involved in genetic engineering and we have had this discussion many times. the point that they make is that pharmaceutical companies must be able to secure their findings to pay for the research they do to find these genes and produce drugs to treat various diseases. remember that companies like merck aren't doing research like this because they are simply curious, no instead they want to find things like the cure for cancer or diabetes or aids or the common cold because it makes them money.
this research is ungodly expensive, so the drug companies want to make sure that if they did the research and found something, their competitors won't be able to cash in on it before they do. or worse yet, some company in asia making pills for next to nothing. this is their greatest fear, and this is why they patent things like there is no tomorrow.
while i still find it morally and ethically wrong to patent things like genes, i can't come up with a better way for these companies to do their business. and as much as i'm not into big businesses, i do like staying healthy...
i'm not sure how you come to this conclusion as it was in their best interest to curb piracy... it may be a free market, but that doesn't make things free.
wanna see inside this thing? its very chic...
take a look at the pics in this article.

i see a revolution in concert design here...
concerts are where musicians make most of their money. the recording industry should embrace and extend damn it!

So are they all moving to the butterfly, or to popup blocker land, or have they wised up and are (doubtful) speaking easy? At the very least we know they aren't finishing the internet...
why give them a chance? they've had year upon year of chances. as chance is to risk, using their products is the same, a risk. i use and as much as i don't like to admit it, like windows 2000. but i don't trust it. hell, even bruce schneier is considering leaving the platform altogether and moving to mac...
