    ...you have to have open data types that is ubiquitous as well. i see a lot of the in-fighting and disagreement of the 'best way' to do things in the open source community as sometimes counterproductive to this end...

    i am awaiting the obvious response that a beowulf cluster of xml will save the world...

    i emulate the internet on an old 386 in the basement. damned thing filled up with porn and websites about cats. had to take it down because the dog started going wild and the kid next door always was creeping into the basement leaving strange stains on my workbench. oh well.

    and learn the piano (guitar, xylophone, kazoo, cello, tooba, etc.) in 12 easy steps so that i don't have to pay these fools for their music? now i wish i payed attention to those lessons as a kid. all i got now is a casio that i can't play (like everyone else). well i guess i better start crackin'. every good boy deserves favor!

    forgive me for my ignorance, but does it do an md5 or something to make sure you are getting the 'approved' version instead of something that might be trojaned? just seems like a good way to spread something like that across the network.

    intel would do well to purchase transmeta. intel could use transmeta's tech for maintaining x86 backward compatibility in the itanium while not requiring a nuclear reactor to power the damn thing.

    via would do well to buy it add the tech to their cyrix chips for low power consumer tech equipment (fast chips in set top boxes).

    i can't really think of what it would benefit amd other than name recognition, but transmeta hasn't been much of a strong name in the industry other than their mysterious pre-launch...

    yeah i discovered this after i posted it... however, regardless of the project, i think this is good for people to know about, at least so they know there are options. here's a few of the previous articles on the subject (in order of appearance):

    so there ya go. with enough support these projects (or derivatives) will hopefully make it so that my grandmother doesn't have to read 20 porn emails on aol everyday. that is the ultimate goal of spam filtering right? =)

    btw, i posted about popfile specifically because it was one of the first filters that i saw that didn't require me to be know how to compile source code or have a linux system etc... i knew there were others (in various forms of completion) out there, but this one worked for me without mucking around (which explains the title of the article).

    this is exactly my thought. for people who live in houses that are close to others, or in apartment complexes say, they have a bit of (poor) security provided by WEP and a bit of (imaginary) security by the very nature of the low power antenna provided by linksys, d-like, etc. however when you start cranking that power up you're worries are going to crank up too. in the ask slashdot question a few days ago about replacing wep wireless security there weren't any good conclusive answers about what joe and jane sixpack can do to set up a relatively secure wireless network w/o being network or security engineers. i can install locks on my door and have a reasonable assurance of privacy, but i can't get something analogous for my network...

    too many programmers with too many egos

    a couple of programmers who start a company often don't know squat about management or hiring it

    games marketed to platforms that aren't large enough to support them are bound for failure
