rampant piracy, poor economic conditions and competition from
video games and DVDs.
Hmm.. they seem to have missed
"boring bands, unoriginal music and inflated CD prices."
Here's a free tip from me to the music industry lurkers:
Shrink-wrapping dog shit does not create a market for
shrink-wrapped dog shit. Think about that, act on it, then give
me 0.5% of the net.
Not as long as I (and about a million other Engineering graduates) know how to build ADCs and DACs from scratch.
Just wait... one day you'll have to go to a DMCA accredited school for those courses and sign legal forms saying you'll only use your knowledge for Good (company profits) and not Evil (fair use)
such a flag would pretty much be ignored by most systems if implemented.
At the moment, sure. However I don't doubt for a moment that there is a concentrated effort to develop and patent a chip which all broadcasts will have to pass through before it hits the TV set. The V-Chip is already in TVs but that's just to keep kids from seeing "bad" TV, the next step is having the broadcasters control what we do with the signals, as if we're all children.
but you could still stop people from recording your broadcast,
reproducing it or distributing it.
I would assume "old"
recording technologies such as VCRs and PVRs would still be able to
record the signal? (Current protection, Macrovision, is easily
scrubbed from a signal.) These bastards have forgotten what the term
"Fair Use" is all about.
Pay for time limited, rental media? Has Circuit City's DIVX
fiasco taught them nothing?
If there were a demand for such an
item I can see them working on it but the media companies try these
silly schemes that have no consumer interest. Naturally they'll end
up somehow blaming P2P for this system's inevitable failure.
Uh huh. A domain created yesterday for a minimum 1 year term.
Also, searching google for "El-Katabi Investment" or "Nim services
BV" (mentioned in their press page) returns no results. Those plugins
likely just say "April Fools" over your speakers (if the plugins
really exist: one online mirror has none of the files and the other
says the limit of 500 users has been reached.)
The goofy idea
of streaming over usenet aside, this sounds like YAAFJ (Yet Another
April Fools Joke) to me.
I don't trust the CDs for sale in the stores, after all, who
regulates that industry and ensures there actually is a message on
them, and if so, what is the message
April 1, 2004:
Aluminium foil sells record amounts worldwide. History will refer
to it as "The Slashdot-Bauxite Phenomena" which seems to
predominately strike teen->30ish single male geeks.
Follow these directions.

Death by Coffee?

Spread out over 24 hours? Hmm.. that's 4.167 cups/hour.
If you were wise and countered the stimulant effect with the soothing
liquid-love that is Guinness
every half hour you should be in fine shape. Can't say the same about
your digestive system the next day (read: "100 coffee + 48 Guinness
== SplatterBum(tm)") but you'll be around to enjoy
it.
disclaimer i: I'm not an MD or biologist,
however I drink with the ones from work quite often.
disclaimer ii: (for your family) if he follows
these directions and dies, my name is Rob Malda.
This wasn't for truckers. The companies would be asked for a rate for "$FOO to $BAR". Our stuff would query all the various trucking companies and come up with rates based on a) best rate, b) fastest time, c) you name it.
Neat stuff in the day but nowadays it'd be considered obsolete.
~12-13 years ago I was working at a place developing software for
the trucking industry. One day
I came to work and the door to our offices was locked (I was usually
the first one in). I went to the landlord saying "The door to our
offices is locked." He held up a bounced cheque and said "I
know."
Fortunately I had some cash saved so I lived for a
while but then I got a phone call many months later from Revenue
Canada (like the U.S.' IRS) saying I hadn't paid any income tax on my
income for that year. "Uhh.. I have my paystubs showing that it was
deducted..." Turns out the owner was deducting tax, charging taxes,
etc and not remitting. Faxed in copies which saved my butt.
That isn't the worst development job
I've had but it was the one that left the worst taste in my
mouth.
When I read "Developer Profile Changing", my first thought is "Shit, I hope they don't want me to start wearing a suit to work!"

... but then the Sun guy couldn't use the paper towel to open the door meaning he's handling everyone elses vile germs on the door handle.
what did they use for a base before 1970?
A black and white camera looking at a sundial in the Berkeley campus.
I think so, but wouldn't it'd be cheaper to just buy an SUV?
King didn't die, but Kurt Cobain did himself in 10 years ago today. Truly an American icon.

Pushing COBOL after the Y2K scare? That's ballsy!

The same thing happened at a company where I used to work (in British Columbia, Canada)
Must be something about these deadbeats and Canada; I'm in Winnipeg.
Lucas: Here's where we had Obi Wan's cloak held up by fishing line when Darth made the final blow an.. oh shit, I got pizza sauce on my shirt.
Lucas: Yeah, the landspeeders were actually mounted on a long arm revolv.. ah.. crap spilled my Pepsi Super Big Gulp..
Lucas: This is where Darth tells Princess Le.. shoot.. can't read that spot in the original script. I have a coffee stain there.

Anyone retarded enough to name their kid in l3375p34k lacks the genes that would make higher learning a possibility anyhow.
