    If somebody came along and made a lightweight, dynamic windowing system and desktop environment for Linux, with real usability and minimalism, I'd shit my pants!

    Decoding video requires a lot more horsepower than audio. My Egoman MP3/VCD player will only play VCD when plugged into the wall. RCA jacks take up a lot of room on the board, it's easier to use a minijack -> RCA adapter cable (they're cheap)

    All for only $3000. They could really built a small, inexpensive cluster with a couple thousand of those.

    That'd be $6 million. I wish I could afford an "inexpensive cluster" such as that. ;)

    At least in a server environment, I don't see the requirement for many gigs of memory (on a single chip no less) without also having better technology to access it quickly.

    Ok.. Now imagine those many gigs of memory on on-die with the CPU itself. Get's interesting, yes?

    Name 5 great software products to have come out of Bangalore.

    You assume that the product will come with a "Made in India" sticker on the shrinkwrap. Much of the software on the shelves is, at least partially, written by geeks in India. Much more custom and vertical market apps too.

    If you have an nvidia card with the latest 3D stereo drivers you can run 3D LCD shutter glasses (assuming your monitor can run ~120 hz or better) and view JPS images in "real" 3D. All JPS images are are 2 JPGs side by side which the viewer splits in half and displays one half at a time per screen refresh.

    I've made a few of my own JPS images simply by taking two pictures with my digital camera a few centimeters offset and combining the two resulting JPGs into one JPS file.

    In The Day I was looking quite seriously at a device which clamped to an IBM Selectric typewriter. Basically it was a box with a load of solenoids which "typed" the data it received from the computer. True letter quality. Heh, thinking about that stuff now is almost embarassing.

    Apple ][+ in 1980. 48K RAM (later upgraded to 64K with a US$99 16K card I bought on a trip to Las Vegas), two 143K floppies, TV with composite in. No cassette, I was a rebel even then :) Oh, bought an Apple Super Serial Card to drive my external, manual 110/300 baud modem (dial, listen for the carrier, flip switch, hang up phone). Oh, I got a printer with it too, an Epson MX80 which was driven by a Grappler card in the Apple. That printer was an absolute battle tank and still works although it's out of use now.

    In 83 or 84 or so I got a 10 MB hard drive for the Apple and thought I'd never need more.. how quick we forget. :)

    True Story: In 1982 or so I had a job stocking shelves (hey, I was 16) Anyhow, I got pretty stoned at dinner break and had a great idea.. I bought a can of gold spray paint in the store then proceeded to completely spray paint a urinal in the men's room. Then I wrote in felt marker
    "The Gold Urinal"
    "A [my surname] Concept"
    Needless to say when my boss called me in the next day and I was straight I didn't think the idea was too smart.

    No, post-war industrialization and the cold war buildup is what made America a superpower. With no obvious "us or them" enemy (ie: the USSR) the economy will suffer. They can't justify spending billions on arming up to protect against an enemy that doesn't exist.

    it's still unfortunately the case that open source software is automatically worse the proprietry software

    All software sucks, the degree of suckiness is what matters. :)
