  1. Don't rest on your laurels. on MySQL & Open Source Code Quality · · Score: 5, Insightful

Perhaps another rung for the Open Source model of software development

    Uhh... no.

It's is a glowing report for this particular open source project but that brush shouldn't be used to paint all open source. That will just lull open source developers into a false sense of euphoric contentment. Code quality didn't get this far by having a fixed target, that target should be a carrot on a stick that will never quite be reached.

Well, in fairness to NUMA it allows a shared memory pool and single system image. These fancy SGI Linux machines with loads of CPUs running a single system image wouldn't exist without NUMA.

NUMA memory may be slower than RAM but it's far faster for interprocessor communications and shared RAM than is a beowulf cluster (which doesn't do shared RAM afaik)

I've had an idea for a few years I'm getting ready to set up:

Have a board in which people move their pieces (say.. a hat, train, etc) around a board with street names. Let the users buy the squares (or "properties") and build houses and hotels on them. If another user lands on the property then the owner can charge rent. Ohh... this just popped into my head, have a corner square labelled "GO" and give each user $200 when they pass it.

I'm going to be a fucking millionaire over this one!

Open sourcing of the code is needed for public confidense if nothing else.

Or at least a "dumbing down" of the system so Ma & Pa Kettle can understand it. Here in .ca we have paper votes, you mark an X in a circle next to the candidates name and you put it in the box. Representatives from all parties in that riding are there to witness the count after and, as a voter, I can stick around to witness the count myself (though I never have).

from the article: "The core of our American democracy is the right to vote," Shelley said. "Implicit in that right is the notion that that vote be private, that vote be secure, and that vote be counted as it was intended when it was cast by the voter."

In my thinking this should mean the source code should be opened to the public to ensure continued trust in the system. "Trust us, we're the government" doesn't carry any weight these days.

then you and your friend could each store half of each mp3 and exchange them back and forth so you never actually hold the entire mp3.

At what point will the courts decide that a collection of bits is the property of another? 100 bytes of an MP3? 1K? 10K? Will the MD5 or SHA1 hash of a file become the property of the copyright holder? It's a very slippery slope.

Anyhow, this product can be used to distribute legal files as well (although I'd be the last person to say that'd be its main use :)) Sending out lawsuits to people just because the run the client wouldn't work. One could say "I share pictures of my nieces and nephews, Your Honour." leaving the onus on the RIAA/MPAA.

Nonsense. That's the skewed reasoning the RIAA has been using to go after the ISPs. What you're proposing is to "shoot the messenger" where the messenger is the computer passing packets and not holding the entire file
