Any successful attempt at making code illegal
will just turn it into samizdat and speed the adoption of encrypted &
anonymous P2P apps (ala FreeNet). It's too bad the recording industry
doesn't put as much effort into signing new and original bands as
they do fighting to protect their antiquated business model.
Yes, I buy CDs but nothing you'd see on a Top 40 chart, will that
make me a criminal one day?
Great.. they make an autonomous helicopter.. somewhere a computer
becomes self aware.. the computer learns of the autonomous
helicopter.. the computer's awareness spreads.. the computer creates
bogus work orders to make thousands more of these helicopters.. the
computer deposits billions of phony electronic dollars in the bank
accounts to pay for this.. the computer generates more work orders
that include fitting the helicopters with missiles, machine guns and
pointy sticks.. the computer takes over the helicopters.. humankind becomes extinct..
Many devices (such as existing LCD displays) can take a digital signal already. In the "Intel/MS" scenario, assume the data stream comes from an unsigned source: the screen could refuse to display.
Such a powerful marketing and technology combination could
blend easily with Microsoft's media center software, which is aimed
at using personal computing technology as the heart of home
entertainment centers.
That concerns me. Microsoft
makes no bones about their "Trusted-this" and "DRM-that" direction.
Considering their relationship with Intel I don't doubt that we'll
see some sort of DRM crud built right into the TV to "protect
consumers from themselves".
I can't help but think there _are_ people at Microsoft that do love what they do,
Oh, absolutely. I didn't mean to infer that everyone there hated their work. I don't doubt, though, that to many Microsofties it's just a job. Lacking passion for what one does leads to mediocre results.
How's stupid enough to run their database server on Windows CE anyway?
Don't think this is a huge focus for Microsoft, they're practising their tried and true method of "throw enough shit against the wall and some of it will stick" marketting. Assuming this product gets a decent foothold then you'll see them really push it.
There are a lot of emulators available for the Mac. Check out emulation.net for a good rundown. Many of these are console emulators (ala mame) but you'll find many computer and OS emulators there.
I pay $50 a month for satellite and I cant even record any TV.
Cancel your satellite and be sure to tell them why you're cancelling it. Or keep it. Either way, you're voting with your wallet, it's up to you to decide how you'll vote.
Antibacterial soaps do more harm than good. The bacteria that survive due to genetic mutations thrive while the others die. That is exactly why we need stronger antibiotics than we did even 10 years ago.
Well d-uh.

That a government agency needs marketing and promotional materials?
Sad, yes. Suprising, no. The whole system has a tarnished reputation and people have lost faith in their governments.
The same thing that happens when you have 10 cups of coffee: SplatterBum(tm)
I don't know what will be more lame: this story or the fact that Taco will dupe it in 45 minutes..

When people use encryption to hurt other people
You mean like when I throw my copy of Applied Cryptography at people's heads?
You mean two or three times now.

Then I RTFA'ed.
If this is true, you'd be the first one today.

.. they can't learn to have a love of what they do. That's a huge difference between Open Source and proprietary.
Damn straight. Reading

That's good, I was worried that this fancy-pants DRM thing wasn't going to take off.
Yup, I had a SCSI Sony 1902 on a PowerMac.

They're going to show it to IBM as well. Not to worry, IBM's army of blue-suited LawDrones will tear it apart line by line.
This could be carried further into a whole indymedia via BT. It would be even harder for governments and industry to silent dissident voices.
You bastard! I only get this the one time every couple of years I'm back there. Fort Garry has got to start shipping Dark to Ontario soon
Haha! Another fan, eh? It's great stuff. I live ~280 steps[0] from a nice pub in Winnipeg that sells it.
[0]- 280 steps going there, 897,178 coming back home.
link requires some other OS... than the ones that 10% of slashdot readers use as their primary desktop OS.
If it was only 10% I'd be suprised. Have they ever published OS breakdown stats? (yes I read a lot, only to bring up the OpenBSD count
