  1. Re:Self Published Dreck on POD Braces Itself Against Amazon · · Score: 3, Informative

POD isn't really about self publishing, even though it lends itself well to it. It's about books always being "in print", no matter how obscure or small the demand.

  2. Re:Dune is rooted in Islamic Culture on New Dune Movie Confirmed · · Score: 1

It's your opinion that a man who is not only prescient of possible futures but able to choose which among them become real is, by ALL rights, not a prophet? *boggle* Erm. Picking a very narrow definition of prophet, are you? Such as "a person that the God Of Abraham reveals stuff for public consumption to"?

  3. Re:Not all slaves would be illiterate ... on How Ancient Mechanics Thought About Machines · · Score: 1

Most important of all to this argument is that, despite all the movies, Romans and Greeks did not use slaves to row galleys. The practice began in the Renaissance.

  4. Re:I have a funny story about a similar Nerf game. on Roleplayers Seek Removal of Nerf Gun Ban · · Score: 1

This whole thing reminds me of the old Steve Jackson game Killer.

It also reminds me that I lost my copy in a flood 12 years ago and how bitter that made me feel.

And then it motivated me to see if I could find anything related on the net, and I see it's back in print.

Thanks Slashdot! I feel a lot better!

That's not a legal status, it is a taxability status. Establishing your tax free eligibility doesn't make you a church or not.

They do talk about religion. The summary just doesn't mention it.

  7. 90's Flashback on IBM Optical Chip Zips Huge Files Using Little Power · · Score: 3, Interesting

Anyone else remember the dramatic claims of special chips that would "soon" allow insane levels of compression in data storage using fractal algorithms? 135 times compression, back when Stacker was was the app that saved your bacon when you ran low on disk space? That's the sort of thing I thought of when I read the headline.

I am making a MINT selling them, thanks for asking!

  9. Re:T'was Ever Thus on RIAA Not Sharing Settlement Money With Artists · · Score: 2, Informative

A simple RoTFA would clarify it. The RIAA per se didn't get the settlements, EMI, Universal Music and Warner Music did. The people complaining they are not getting any of it are the managers of various high profile artists, such as the Rolling Stones, Korn, Christina Aguilera, The Eagles, Van Halen, REO Speedwagon and Seal.

In other languages, yes, in English, that is not the common parlance. Such nomenclature, in English, evaluates as true but is not the usage.

  14. Re:Only known what? on The Grammy In Mathematics · · Score: 1

Might as well correct myself. Latter. And to cut even more hairs, a radio studio counts as a studio performance, even transmitted live. Perhaps "in concert" is the term best used.

  15. Re:Only known what? on The Grammy In Mathematics · · Score: 1

A recording of a live performance, as opposed to a studio recording. Lots of the later, only this one of the former.

  16. Re:Blashphemy ! on 111 Years Ago, Indiana Almost Legislated Pi · · Score: 1

It goes a little beyond having associated numerical values. Using letters of the alphabet was the way numerical values were recorded. The "methodology" is to sum the numerical values of the letters in a string. That's it. When you have a word and you're giving it a value, it is always the sum, never equations. Hebrew numerals are very much like early Roman numerals (ie before transpositions were introduced), only with every letter having a value instead of a handful.

  17. Re:Of course men not obsolete just yet on Sperm Made From Female Bone Marrow, Men Obsolete? · · Score: 1

My family is another example. My identical twin uncles were one of each. This also excludes fetal exposure... if the twins were in the same womb, one would expect the same influence to have the same effect. Which is not to say a change couldn't happen while a fetus, just that it wasn't something both were exposed to.
