I don't think that thats what the people who say Mac s just work are trying to describe. I myself was once a Linux bigot who really took pride in making shit work. It was a challange and I still enjoy the challange. However, due to life with kids and trying to depart from being at my computer all but a few hours a day I am going to buy a Mac. I still cringe at the costs, but if I buy a new mac I get iMovie and iDVD. Yes, even getting a firewire DV cam to work on Linux is trivial. Compile kernel, rinse repeat. I will even say that Kino has amazed me with the progress it has made in the last 6 months. Its a little to buggy, but it does work. Making nice looking DVDs sucks. Sure writing DVDs is easy, but it is a very trial and error process when you get into making complex menus. Not to say that it won't get better, but wow the things I see people do with a G5 or a powerbook. It does look slick, but the whole system acts just as that... a system. Its all fluid from app to app and everything runs great. I like eye candy; I'm an Enlightenment user and E.17 looks killer. By the time E.17 is done the MOL project will be far enough along that I can run all my swanky Mac apps at full speed in a window on my new Powerbook or I may even be able to run E with the X11 system built into Mac OSX. It just seems to me the buying a Mac gives me more flexibility in the end and I won't be buying a new system anytime soon, and if I do the machine WILL be worth something. I have a few old Macs (233mhz iMac, 266mhz Wallstreet Powerbook) that have been sitting in the basement for 2 years and still are worth 200 and 350 dollars respectivly. Games are one thing that kinda bug me, but since I only run Linux I will find every openGL based game on Linux available on Mac. AppleScript for gui stuff also looks interesting. Linux is great in my Tivo and the thousands of servers I run at work, but as a desktop OS today OSX offers a better all around system and even still I will have hardware that is fairly rock solid. Just don't buy the first revision as *ANY* manufacturing process usually sucks on the first rev be it cars or computers. I wish all of the Linux folk would calm down about people wanting to switch. If you just need IRC, a terminal, and office apps Linux is fine and thats why businesses are switching. I am amazed that people will sit around and cheer for Linux on the desktop in the office. Don't people know that pushing out Linux means limiting what people can do? Most businesses just install Windows... That means people have games no matter how lame they are. Same Gnome is a great time killer, but do you think the wave of cheap linux Pcs and LTSP clients will have all of those apps? No way. What I want is an OS where the things that I need work without me saying it will be better next month.
Personally I use the Nex II from FrontierLabs( link). For a mere $100 bucks you get a device that will run all CF cards (including the MicroDrive) and can act as portable drive. A word of caution: MircoDrives SUCK battery. The 1GB is much better then the 340mb, but it is still a lot of power suckage. I would suggest getting a 512mb CF card.
There were far mor advances in 2001 that really should have been mentioned. The biggest I can think of is the introduction of SMP for Athlon based systems. Granted the Tyan thunder K7 is pricey (includes dual channel scsi), but while you are getting scsi, a *nice* case, expensive power supple and the like, it makes sense to go ahead and shell out the bucks for a SMP system. The only downfall to all of this would be that the Tyan Thunder SMP Athlon board would not fit inside the case so it would require an upgrade to a larger case. Oh yeah and through on a SoundBlaster Audigy as well. That would be a more ultimate system.
Oh yeah the Tyan Tiger MP (S2460) is a newer board that does not have SCSI and is priced at around $230.00.
Tivo uses an IR blaster to change channels (works great as long as your cat does not eat the IR blaster). All Tivo did was make create a marketing deal with ATT to sell Tivos.
As much as I moan about the problems that come about from being an AT&T broadband subscriber the one glimer of hope was my good long distance rate. I can not believe AT&T did not cut a deal to keep the phone service portion of AT&T broadband. They have been fighting for years to get local phone service into home accross the nation, but now they are just giving up. It is a shame that so many good business/tech people have lost their jobs in the past year, but a company like AT&T is able to make billion dollar blunders because they are still living off of the wealth and status they gained 30 years ago.
This quite good for the GPL. Now "problems" like the MySQL AB and NuSphere issue may be settled much easier then was previously thought.

I personally believe people went into this movie with a lot of expectations which were not met. Did Spielberg try to become Kubrick to pay homage to his close friend? I think the answer would be a resounding yes, but people need to look past that and many other "plot" points and look at a few of the ideas which have never been wrestled with very well in the past. Such as when a robot becomes sentient (define it as you must) what are societies moral obligations to it. Perhaps David surpased what a robot truly is and in some way had a "soul." Also I thought the robots (loose definition) of 2000 years in the future revering humans as gods was quite interesting. Perhaps this is similar to how man views god. Despite everyone saying they did not like this plot line or that scene we must look at the movie as a whole. To look at Clock Work Orange or 2001 and not consider the ethical questions tackled is quite a shame. See past the idea that "Spielberg is not Kubrick and he was horrid in his attempt." The movie is much more then what is on the screen. Kubrick has always asked us to think outside the film, and if we do not do that with AI we are just dismissing what Kubrick's true legacy has been.

I have worked with PHP, ASP, Perl, and many other languages including iHTML. While every OpenSource hero will tell you to always use PHP or Perl every language has something to offer. After using it for a few months I must say it has some impressive features that you can not develop in other languages quite as easily. Choose the language based on the task. Seeing as how iHTML is not that expensive (ala ColdFusion) if it fits your needs use it. The one site I have seen (and done a little work on) written in iHTML is SearchKing. While it is not a great website it has some interesting functionality that was easy to build using iHTML.

Despite the many of us that may have strong feelings on this "freedom" thing it is really in Sprint's best interest to do what they can to make money. They need to report good earnings back to investors just like any other public firm (especially with the recent drop in telecom). The real education needs to be provided to the common at home user that will have their rights taken away by such a blatent disregard for consumer rights. Sure geeks will stay away from Sprint, but that is such a small market it will not effect Sprint unless more is done to inform the rest of the population (99.9% of the population to be more accurate).

I have worked at several companies in the past year and have become quite use to them pushing around the lowly worker. In short of a union there is really no way the sys admins/hackers of the work force will be able to fight back and gain the rights taken away in the tech industry. Why would you even want to work for a company that treated you like that? It obviously can not be that great of a place to work when the management is willing to make such bad choices of how to treat employees.

So this is why I can not get my PS2? If we went to war over oil under the first President Bush maybe we should go to war over this with the new President Bush. It would get is presidency off to quite a nice start and it would get me the PS2 I do not want to pay $1000.00 for on Ebay. Rape and pillage the PS2s of Iraq! Let us show them why The United States won once and we can do it again!

Everything was great and I was on the edge of my seat until you said "silly blue men." In fact they are not silly but they are blue. They are called The Blue Man Group (can be seen in the upper right hand corner of the screen at the start of the commercial). They are a performance art team who not only do wacky things with pigments, but they play music as well The music during the commerical is actually them playing. This is all a lie. Give me a break. We all know this was formulated by the government to make us pay our taxes to fund NASA. Look at the image. Its a rubber ball skillfully painted to what we think Jupiter looks like (the text books are just tools of the government). We should lessen the spending on NASA and put it towards guns and tanks. NASA is a way to channel money into the new UN which is trying to take over our country as it is. Arise my fellow AMERICANS and fight the lies that our so called government is attempting to lull us to sleep with!

I was just looking into this last night. Dolphin (A motherboard by Tyan) is due out in the last quarter this year. Thats what they say anyway. It will have ATA 100 support and DDR support, or so they claim. Tyan has no information on their website but you can pick up a snippet at AMDZone and the odd OCers webpage.

One would think there there is always a big audience in aww of what Titanium is etc etc. Perhaps this could be just like Diamonds. I would have to read more into the industry, but I would think there are only a few select dealers of Titanium just like Debeers is to diamonds. Diamonds are less rare in nature than Ruby or Emralds, but due to Debeers having upwards of 95% of the worlds diamonds they can set the price as such. I would hate to see a great resource go to waste but who knows what those who control the Titanium market will do. Think of it sure its as cheap to make as aluminium, but diamonds are mined in Zimbabwe by Africans making less than a sweat shop worker in Indonesia.

One of the major issues that I have with the new Sub-NoteBooks containing the Transmeta is the price. Back at this time last year we were told that the Cursoe was not only a less battery intensive solution but a more cost effective one as well. Are all of their claims that they made last year not stacking up now that the actual devices are hitting the market. I was so excited and now I just feel let down. I can buy a Pentium 600 for cheaper and with only an expected 10-20 percent gain in the longevity of the battery it becomes almost a moot point. Give me a WebPad with a Crusoe, that I would love. However, this just seems like another rehash with a different name. Give me some benchmarks on actual marketed systems not lab tests.

It really bothers me that many consultants consider Linux a bad OS just because they can not make money selling it or supporting it because they do not understand its power. If your looking for dual port NICs (or even quad port for that matter) and it will work great in Linux. I have what I would call a VLan server with 2 4 port Intel NIC cards. They are wonderful cards and I have had no probelms with them whatsoever (they do run the up to date module). Good luck.
