I think the subject of raises when it comes to internal promotions deserves some attention too. The last time I quit my job in favour of a higher paying one, it was due to the fact that even a year after moving up into NOC, I was still on tech support salary. This was sadly the norm for most of my colleagues that moved up the same ladder.
When the yearly salary reviews were done and all that was given out was a small cost of living increase, I decided it was time to exercise my other options.
From previous experience this unfortunatley seems to be the norm at more than a few places. I'd imagine that this happens in many more places than IT also which is not really good - doesn't really encourage staff to work towards forward movement.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that computing has neither gotten *easier* nor *harder* to do. It is easier to *get into*, but if you're half decent at IT, you will realize that the learning experience is never done. I noticed a lot of stuff here mentions some particular facet of IT, like programming, and lower level tech jobs, but really, how many of you are doing things that you *didn't* learn in school? Do you know enough about linux and systems in general to use an strace, and know enough about the kernel calls that it spits out to acutally make use of the information to troubleshoot a problem when all over attemps have revealed nothing? How many of you guys know how to stop a DoS attack? Multiple types of DoSes? How many of you have a basic understanding of security, how a buffer overflow works, how a virus or trojan works, or how to use common sense to keep attackers out rather than just using "solutions" that some snake oil salesman sold you? etc etc etc!
And while I don't agree with the parent really, as it's really disrespectful for the women that actually make the effort (although hey, admit it people, the perl necklace thing... he's DEAD on)... I can for sure say that the male in me finds it EXTREMELY frustrating and somewhat depressing that he has to sit in a sausage fest for 9 hours out of my day, 5 days a week (sometimes 6).
Mars (aka IT) for sure needs women. Help!:)
PS: For the women that work in IT firms but do so in things like marketing, CS, sales, reception, etc... why not take up a challenge and get the ball rolling? I'm sure your friendly neighborhood sysadmins would have no problems teaching a lady a thing or two, if she was willing to learn.;)
The main causes given for the closures is locating a Cybercafé right next to a school and allowing minors free access to pornography....... They also restrict violent games to certain age groups, which is different to the age requirements we have on our computer game boxes, how exactly?
Nowhere in the article does it state that the porn and video game bans are restricted to just minors.
Which is not right and not suprising. Isn't porn illegal in India, period, too? Wtf?
Seriously. Some countries need to wake up, get with the 21st century and ditch the government sanctioned moral repression already.
what about when money is taken electronically from a bank account, without consent of the actual owner? Nothing has been taken physically, but it's still considered a form of theft.
Of course.
Lost revenue != stealing money that's already there.
I don't think a new ATI video card is worth paying for, but I don't go into a store and take it (IE get it for free).
Hate to beat the dead horse but....
Are you copying the video card? Or taking it? You're taking it, hence *stealing* from the store. That actually works doubly. You've stolen their stock, *and* perhaps depriving them of a sale.
The fact you got it for free isn't theft. The fact that you.. well, stole, something from someone, that's the theft.
right, and what about when you copy their bank account number or Credit Card? what about identity theft? It's still called theft even though nothing has been physically taken.
Yeah, maybe in words, but "identity theft" has more in common with impersonation than it does with actual theft. It's not really a big deal that the person *has* the information but what they *do* with the information. When the identity thief uses that information to suck out your bank account or rack up your credit card, that's where the theft comes in. Etc etc.
If you don't think something is worth paying for, why do you have to download it for free?
Did you even read over this sentence before you posted it? I think you answered your own question, although it should have been painfully obvious in the first place.
"We own the engine, we can write an expansion feature into the next patch and use it in one of our modules to get a head start on the competition."
Or lease it, such as in the event of Neverwinter Nights 2.:)
Development on the Aurora engine on part of Bioware is largely done, IIRC. They're working on Dragon Age now which is supposed to be their next-gen NWN, sort of - it's all in-house this time, using a system of their own making.
I think it'd be neat if it went open source sometime though, kind of like Doom and Quake, etc.
From what I heard Crystal Chronicle might be just the right game for you, I've heard it's more action-adventure than RPG, so there ya go! I haven't been keeping up too much with it as I don't have a GC but yeah, something maybe worth looking into...??
FFX-2 is incorporating battlefield positions and movement into its fight system and also bringing back the conditional ATB, which will also make things a bit more realtime in that regard.
Yes I can say that the FF series definitely affected me by making me more of a nerd and robbing me of any viable social life every other year when they would finally decide to release one of the games over in north america.;)
Right now I own every core game that's out for a playstation console.
Personally I don't really like the way that Square is focusing on graphics and plot right now - it seems that with every installment the system gets dumbed down another notch - shining example and the cumulation of this would of course have to be FFX - I mean come on, the first few hours is like one big long cutscene, you just go thru it selecting stuff and talking to people with little or no chance of dying at all. Real gameplay doesn't even really get unlocked until about 3 or 4 hours in.
The sad part is this is what the new generation of FF gamers seem to want, to which I say - read a book or rent a movie, and for that matter, would you read a novel that was almost all pictures, that involved no reading? So why would you play a game that was almost all cutscenes and FMV's that involved almost no gameplay (exaggeration but you get the point).
Square has an oppritunity to redeem themselves though and have in a way from the looks of it. FFX-2 reintroduces the job system, which is cool. They still don't have real equipment but hey, at least they're admitting it this time, and are referring to your 2 auto-ability equipments at "accessories". I'm more stoked to see what FFXII will look like, as Amano's preview poster paints a promising picture as to what the world will be like - much along the style of FFIX, termed the "old-schooler" or the PSX series, so maybe it'll be a return to the old school values and systems also. Which would be a pleasure as there's so much that could be done with that system on the PS2 platform!
FF Origins probably also restored some people's faith - remaking the first two games with 16-bit style graphics that are even better looking than the SNES games, renewing the call by hardcore fans for an original 16-bit style game for the GBA platform... (all we have now is FFTA which from what I've personally seen seems to be very very close looking to Tactics Orge, funny since Square now owns Quest).
Anyways I guess the only thing the hardcores can do is wait and see. As for me, I'll probably be trying to beat those pesky weapons again after I get home tonight from work.;)
What really makes me laugh about this, and really, of the whole "I Am Canadian" thing in itself, is that that Willam and John Molson were pro-annexation.
Probably becuase they also contained adult content

Could be wrong, but the arcades over here downtown also have 25 cent peepshow booths. It's probably the xxx content more than the games.
A lot of ISPs have these kinds of clauses in thier TOS agreements already. It's basically, as I'm sure everyone knows already, to cover thier own asses. All the ISPs that I've worked for have very similar clauses. For example, 7.1.2 is pretty much a textbook condition: you'll find a paragraph that looks very similar to this in almost every big ISP's TOS.
Some of them are kind of hard to belive tho, such as 7.1.7 and 7.1.8, and 7.1.18 - kind of ridiculous if you ask me. But it's still the usual run-of-the-mill legal drivel, basically used to cover the company when some snotty lawyer gets in thier face. Half of it is not really enforced on a regular basis. (Imagine how many customers around the world ISP's would lose if they all couldn't upload/view porn!)
I think a lot of gamers feel like they are supposed to be catered to in an adaption movie. Picking apart section after section, saying that "what the hell is that, that's not how that's done", et cetera. I know I cringed when game elements were poorly acted out in movies mentioned above, but I've always been able to take it in stride and actually make an unbiased opinion like I knew shit all about the game or the movie concept, etc.
Mario was neat
I loved MK1, MK2 didn't push the envelope, so it gets my thumbs down.
And I actually thought street fighter was kinda cool.
I'd have to agree with you on the comic book thing tho, obviously superman and batman have been phenomomonal (sp? haha) at the box office. I'm sure comic book buffs can tend to whine about that stuff too tho:)
And also lets microsoft have a bit more control as to what gets said... I agree tho, it's not going to work out like microsoft is probably anticipating. But they're obviously trying to keep shit in the dark.
Well if good "old fashioned" managment techniques mean overworking your employees and treating them like dirt or little more than pawns in a chess game, count me out.
One of the reasons I love the computer industry is because it's easy to find a company with a fresh, laid back attitude to work, yet can still get the job done. Work hard and play hard.

Agreed. Wtf Slashdot? Come on, we get so much of this partisan crap everywhere else we really don't need to see it in here. Ditch the categories.
Heh - and I'm not even an American.
