"It's a great time to be an open source company" - Other than a warm fuzzy feeling that you're making the software world a better place, why give your product away for free? Can this business model last forever?
Considering the old site used a table based layout with numerous levels deep, it did deserve a redesign. Most of the flash on the page is acceptable but to use it as the main navigation goes against many basic rules of the web. Redesigning is just job security for most of us.
That 25% increase might be higher if they didn't block bugmenot user names AND at the same time their stupid registration page doesn't work for me in any browsers either. I used them a lot until all of that happened.
Having used Google Analytics for free for the past 2 years, it will be tough for these up and coming analytics packages to beat them, especially the ones offered for free. Probably the only way they will convert new users is offer them relevant reports that GA doesn't. GA has recently included several new features as well. Whatever Google wants to do with my analytics data is fine, since I get so few visitors to my site.
Nice post. In a way it sort of puts Apple in the same hole as Microsoft, meaning that they have to ensure their software works on 1000's of different configurations. That is one of the reasons Macs are stable is because the code base is small and only needs to support a narrow range of hardware.
We already know why IE7 is behind but what makes Firefox lag behind Safari and Opera with this? Does it all come down to browser share = slow progress? Or could it be that Opera and Safari are putting other projects behind to pass the Acid3 test?
I think it's more of an atrocity to bundle the stupid Quicktime program with Itunes. They claim that Itunes requires parts of Quicktime to work but I have a nagging suspicion that it isn't the case.
Ironically with all this news about him recently, his own page on wikipedia appears to be missing all of this info. Are the wiki-ites so dedicated that they can't post current news and criticism about him?
At least on the IEBlog, which is notorious for anger and rage, there were positive comments. It appears that regardless of what gets posted on Slashdot, all people can do is complain. How about we all just admit it and say "thanks IE team" for once.
When watching American Dad, all I can think of is how it's more or less an extension of family guy as it is. I don't think there is anymore room for another one of Seth McFarlane's shows on TV.
Gez, there's nothing worse than having your company emails posted for the whole world to see. It always seems like Microsoft internal communications are the first to be released.
I understand that they make these cars to be aerodynamic but do they really need to be so damned ugly? I would rather drive a car at 35mpg on only gas than be seen in something like this (and many of the other "high mpg" cars.)
Uh, why not just delete everything from your profile BEFORE you choose to delete your account? Sure all those annoying comments you left on other people's walls may still be there but your profile data won't.
Ever since facebook added those stupid applications to their site people feel the need to add EVERY SINGLE ONE to their profile. Often times it takes several rolls of the mouse wheel to post a comment on someones wall (assuming you skip past their "advanced wall" and "super happy fun wall")
Facebook used to have a great sense of style on their site (something myspace has always lacked) but since they've opened their site up to blind/color blind developers it sucks.
I've tried to avoid the applications like the plague, since I've always figured they got access to more information than I wanted, but there are a few apps that work well and look good at the same time.
Does this apply to US citizens coming back into the US or to foreigners entering the country? I can see how something like this could happen with foreigners, not that it's ok to do necessarily.
I'm really bothered by the fact that Time Warner controls entire cities and other companies control other areas. I would prefer to have cable internet (i can't get dsl where I am and I don't want satellite or dial up) So when they come up with a stupid idea like this, I have no viable alternative but to put up with it.
It would be better for consumers to have two competing cable companies in cities rather than one. Maybe this is a bad idea but why not make the cable pipelines controlled by tax payers money (like the us road system is) and have the cable companies share it.
I can't see how this would possibly work for either company. Yahoo is the most visited site on the net http://www.quantcast.com/top-sites-1 and is way ahead of msn or any of it's other services. It would almost be in Microsoft's best interest to adopt all of Yahoo's online services rather than throw out Yahoo's or have both at the same time. There are so many users of both brands that they would need to co-exist, probably forever.
The news seems to be too focused on their market share of their search engines. Between Yahoo and Microsoft I think they have many services that are much better than what Google has. I don't think this needs to be an issue of Google has 66% of searches, Yahoo has 20% Microsoft has 10%.
Perhaps the two companies can share their strengths with one another. It seems to relate to the company that I work at where we bought several other competitor companies yet we sell them all still competing against each other. It's a very strange way to do business competing against yourself with all the different brands.
That sucks that you can't buy your last name. Perhaps the hacker.name domain is still available or at least cheaper.
When somebody translates my last name I usually use a canned joke of mine and say it's refering to the head below the belt.
I suspect that in the next 10-20 years there will be a big rush on people's full names. Currently only web developers and bloggers have their own name as a domain but as the web becomes more and more popular and a part of people's life, they will eventually buy their own name and point it somewhere.
That's why I own http://www.nealgrosskopf.com/ and grosskopf.name. Having your last name as a domain is nice because it allows you to create sub-domains of family members and create email addresses such as neal@grosskopf.name.
That's the main difference between Apple and Microsoft. Microsoft is obessed with backwards compatibility and Apple isn't as much. It's one of those judgements you need to make when considering an OS, do I want backwards compatibility or performance?
Seriously? Lol.

I'm married, perhaps your definition of it means !=gay

Perhaps this is the first step in Apple becoming a giant monopoly selling their OS and other software.
nuff said.

if firefox has 125 million users then IE has well over a billion. That doesn't add up.
