    Time is more than money. As someone who has been putting together my own computers for the last ~30 years, I enjoy it. It's fun for me.

    That probably has more to do with youth and discovery than any particular era. Now I wouldn't argue that people who don't build their own computers are stupid, but I also wouldn't argue that building your own computer is a waste of time/money.

    people buying extended warranties on sub $1000 purchases.

    Wal-Mart asked me if I wanted a warranty on a $50 microwave. I think it was $5 for 12 months. I cringed thinking that some people would say yes.

    Checks you say.... I haven't written one of those in months.

    I write void on them when I setup an ACH account. I guess I could just keep a copy/scan of one but then I would never use them.

    I remember when I got my first check book. It was the key to my first bank account. I could write an amount on a piece of paper, sign my name and people would give me stuff. Then electronic payments via credit cards/ACH/etc. came. Bill payments seemed like the last to give in. The check book started as something wonderful to me and then ended with the memory of paying bills.

    Plenty of eyecandy to spare.

    And they do it all wrong. If Ubuntu is going to use Compiz by default they should setup the cube. Set fire to close windows. Genie for min/max (airplaine, beam, something cool). I understand why some people don't like eye candy though. Unfortunately Unity provides none of the really cool eye candy or configuration (by default) and every conceivable problem.

    For what it's worth my 8.04 machine with 1.5G RAM +compiz +compiz-addons is far more responsive under load than Unity is on an Aspire 5250-BZ873, both running similar compiz effects.

    If you're going to use Compiz for your eye-candy at least install the Compiz manager by default

    If you're going to take 3 icons to display 'office' programs at least spare one for a menu.

    I'm writing this from 11.10. Installed Saturday. My biggest complaint is that processes are allowed to take 100% of the CPU and freeze the user.

    OSX hardware support is pretty sparse as well. Out of the half dozen or so computers I have at home, OSX supports none of them ;)

    Relatively recently China allowed the Yuan to float and it has gotten stronger since. 6.38 CNY to 1 USD from 6.82 when it was first allowed to float.. Last year they had a trade surplus with the U.S. of nearly $300 billion. We know this because we know what our deficit was.We know China owns 1.1 trillion in U.S. treasury bonds.

    I admit that I may have information bias so I'm interested in the reverse idea.

    I can tell an iPad and iPad 2 apart at ten feet, Samsung needs lawyers with better perception skills.

    I couldn't because I'm not that familiar with them. I might be able to tell you one is different than the other but not which one was which.

    When I was a child I was rarely allowed to drink pop/soda/cola. It was a long time before I was able to tell if I was drinking Coke or Pepsi. Most people couldn't tell you which laptop a manufacturer makes without the logo at any distance. It's a silly test.

    I don't think you two are even arguing about the same thing. He is arguing the GUI aspect of the Start Menu and you are arguing the 'text' part of it. Updating the old run/search box has little to do with the GUI changes of the Start Menu from XP to Vista/7.

    When I paste sometimes I use ctrl+v, sometimes shift+ins, sometimes I click the clipboard, sometimes I go to edit paste, sometimes I right click and paste, (and sometimes I can just use the middle mouse button). Options are good.

    With 13 months until the election the news channels will be sure to play it out like a long soap opera but you are probably correct. It is likely voter turnout will be driven by dissatisfaction which doesn't bode well for the sitting President.

    As privacy groups bring up issues and try to push Congress to enact legislation controlling data storage/usage he needs to cover his ass no matter which party controls Congress. It also doesn't hurt to influence a government that influences so many other governments.

    The 'do this then do that' teaching method may have pros. There is a hypothesis that imitating may provide the quickest way to expand and increase complex skills. I say this as someone who enjoys experimenting and feel compelled to understand things.

    While pattern recognition is important it also useful to know patterns are not a rule. Is there a face on Mars? Does my toast/potato chip look like a saint/president?. The real questions is 'Do you support this action or not?'

    I don't believe it is that complex. It's a medium for communication. Not the first and by all indications not the last for humans. There isn't really anything that could be done online between a teacher and student that couldn't be done offline. It's the offline that people tend be concerned about anyway. New mediums should not mean new laws. Current law provides codification of teacher/student relationships. Why does a particular communication medium add complexity?

    There was a time when people just carried cash. Then some carried cash and credit cards and finding a place that accepted them was the exception instead of the rule. Now, some don't carry cash. If Google can get their wallet taken anywhere Visa is accepted, I can see some people leaving their credit cards at home. I could even see the potential for people never getting a physical credit card someday. Next up, Google ID :\

    BTW I have a dumb phone so I am personally not interested in it at this point. If I ever am I won't be an early adopter, but time will tell if Google Wallet or something similar ever becomes the norm.

    Just because something is illegal doesn't mean any punishment is justifiable or logical. If we were arguing about a reasonable fine versus no punishment I could see your side. Take traffic violations. Would a $150,000 speeding ticket be justifiable on the grounds that it's illegal? Rolling a stop sign? Failing to signal? It doesn't make sense to argue that just because someone broke a law that any punishment is by default justifiable.
