These telcoms have millions of dollars worth of lawyers on retainer for situations like this. They knew they where breaking the law. The presidential administration can't make them do anything illegal. In fact some of the telcoms told the bush administration NO [wired.com].
it seems the girl's tragedy was a lack of attentive parenting and not a lack of laws? With a book's worth of education mom and dad are more effective than legislation at protecting their children from internet jerks. Put Nancy E. Willard's "Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens" on Oprah's book list and more will have been accomplished for protecting children on the internet than any amount of internet bullying legislation.
Its never too late to change your major to MIS (or IS?), but its sort of like recanting after the inquisition has finished with you. Though expensive, college is fun and creditors can't reposes your brain!
Wasn't the CS degree suppose to keep non programmers out of the trenches? How does an honest person earn a CS degree without being much of a programmer? If we can only stop grade inflation, life might improve.
A tech answer to this question may leave you wanting. The best way to protect your privacy is to make it illegal again for the government to infringe on it. Sweden is a parliamentary democracy that has to answer to the people. Organize and get involved in your government. Just don't do it over email for now.
this is great. now i can have all my gmail as well as all my company email in the hands of lord google. now when is my beta gparcel service going to get here?
third world countries are already inundated with our tech waste. most likely the laptops will end up being burned by children inside of a used tire for the precious metals. always make sure your used tech is not destined for the third world before you drop it at the recyclers.
since when does math and science create what Africans consider wealth? their quality of life is not tied to their gdp. Hawking's Einsteins seem like another African resource to exploit.
i've been the victim of eager agents on two occasions. its a very helpless and angry feeling to watch my civil rights stomped at a border crossing or customs check point. I'm not interested in giving up liberty for temporary security. i'm bringing an old laptop or busted hard drive on every trip from now on. It will be full of hidden folders, worthless suspiciously named documents, and weak encryption. Plus, I'm going to let my dad surf the internet with the laptop for three months so every annoying debilitating piece of ad/spy/mal ware gets onto the hard drive. Civil decent is the necessary response to tyranny such as this.
Didn't congress rule that digital files where considered personal effects just like phone conversations? Seems like this bill is unconstitutional. Not to mention this technology would be abused with warrentless wire taps. Mean while pedophile p2p networks start using encryption and snail mail. Personal privacy is the only thing this technology will stop.
Somebody lied to you when they said the "Government Class" is crap, or you're lying to yourself. Maybe you feel the way you do because saying the system is crap is easier than participating in it. Seems you don't like the money influence in politics, well, stop being an "Anonymous Coward" and do something about it. The tools are still available, get active.
how about obeying existing laws? i will believe privacy legislation means something to google when the Sherman Antitrust Act means something to google.
Their PR people are touting "No Evil" as the company aggressively expands their monopoly. Don't pee down my back and tell me its raining!
the time for citizens of the uk to start saying no may be overdue. the abuse of their privacy hurts us all. the uk lowers the bar, and allows other governments to take a little privacy here and there and then point their figure at the UK and say at least its not that bad. When the government wants to take things, Charelton Heston likes to say, "...from my cold dead hands." I am not a fan of Heston nor the NRA, but I do encourage the uk to employ honest descent from policies that take privacy/freedom in an attempt to provide security.

worse yet our society has gotten lazy at parenting, as illustrated by this tragedy.

RIGHT ON MAN! Obama is such a hope monger! he needs to be less optimistic and start toiling like you in our country's despair and backwards politics.
