    Here is a thought. Build a dragster without a driver.
    A light sensor to detect the "Go" light. (Yeah I know tons about racing.)
    A little computer power to keep it running straight, and to tell it when to start and stop.

    I wonder how it would do against a living driver.

    There are 2 computers sitting on a table one costs $1199, and the other costs $729. Which are you going to try to hack?
    $1199 = Cheepest MacBook Pro.
    $729 = Dell Vostro with comparable specs.

    paperbacks don't survive too many readings; they're designed to be semi-disposable.

    Interesting, because I have a number of paperback books published in the 1950's Well, worn, but still just as readable as the day they were printed.

    This is one of the main things that stops me from embracing e-books. How do you read 60 year old data? For the most part the hardware no longer exists to read data from 1950s - 1960s computers. If I buy an e-book today will I be able to reread it in 2070? If I buy a paper book, I will.

    I picked up a copy of PM, for the train trip home. Over all not bad, but I kept looking forward to the ads in the back. When I finally got the the ads, I was disappointed. No ads for highly improbable devices, no ads for army surplus jeeps at $20. I miss the old days!

    You are seriously "just making a childhood memory better than it really was". I watched it through a few months ago. Honestly it is best left in your treasured childhood memories. For me, Star Trek the Animated Series wins hands down as worst piece of crap that I liked when I was a kid.

    Well, there is Entourage. But every Mac user I know who is using it hates it. I do recall reading somewhere that M$ is finally porting Outlook fully to the Mac, but I don't remember where I read it.

    Of course you could always do yourself a a favor and toss the exchange server and replace it with the far superior Kerio mailserver. Then you can use Mac Mail, and iCal on the Mac, and Outlook for the poor bastards still forced to use windows.

    The trackpad on the HP is pretty bad. But since the only thing I use the HackBook for, is video, and sometimes a little mild surfing on my commute I can deal with it.

    for every BS Apple product rumor, I could probably afford the new Apple iTablet when it finally comes out in 2025.

    For the record I own a MacBook Pro, and a Mac Mini.
    Not to mention my HackBook Mini. (HP mini 1116 running Snow Leopard.)

    I am advocating that next election we simply remove the party leaders. They have shown over and over again that that are incapable of leading, and don't even seem to be able to work and play well with others.
    As you so rightly pointed out there are no good choices. I for one would vote for the first one that can show me they realize that if you have $10 you can't spend $20. This simple concept seems to be beyond most/all politicians.

    I have little doubt the businesses will find uses for tablets. But for that to happen they will need to be made much more rugged. Most businesses will buy an expensive rugged product over a cheep disposable product every time.
    Just thinking about it now, perhaps ChromeOS would be a good match for such a device.

    For some reason everyone seems to think a tablet is the holy grail of computing. I can tell you, for most uses they don't add any value. I have owned two of them, and found both to be uncomfortable, and difficult to use. On the other hand, my HackBook Mini (AKA HP Mini 1000 with Snow leopard) gets used daily, and is an absolute pleasure to use.

    Tablets seem like a solution in search of a problem to me.
