Imagine a machinima Gutenberg project - producing free versions of all the classic stories Disney ripped off.

At deep-discount stores you can get almost-free ripoffs of the classic Disney ripoffs of the classic public-domain stories (e.g., Aladdin). Uhh ... does that count? ;-)

See the /. interview, in answer to the question 'Comedy or Tragedy?':
I've hit a certain amount of difficulty over the years in explaining [Arthur] in Hollywood. I'm often asked 'Yes, but what are his goals?' to which I can only respond, well, I think he'd just like all this to stop, really. It's been a hard sell. I rather miss David Vogel from the film process. He's the studio executive at Disney who was in charge of the project for a while, but has since departed. There was a big meeting at one time to discuss, amongst other things, Arthur's heroicness or lack of it. David suddenly asked me 'Does Arthur's presence in the proceedings make a difference to the way things turn out?' to which I said, slightly puzzled, 'Well, yes.' David smiled and said 'Good. Then he's a hero.'
  12. perspective drawings in 40's animation on Disney Completes Dali Animation · · Score: 2, Interesting

I remember reading about the Disney company's first (?) use of CG, in The Black Cauldron. There was a shot where the characters step into a rowboat and it was supposed to bob up and down, but when the animators tried to hand-draw the boat, it deformed like it was made out of rubber. So ... the hundreds of perspective drawings required by the Dali short would have been just horrendous, if not impossible.

  16. idea for tool builders: metadata on Removing Proprietary Bits from Illegally Closed Open Source? · · Score: 1

This is slightly OT but ...

Could this be prevented if there were a metadata system which tracked license & ownership of code (at least at a per-method level)?

You'd have to plug (convenient) support into the IDEs and code repositories, but it seems like it would be an improvement.
