I remember Bonzi buddy like it was yesterday. I can still remember using Musicmatch Jukebox handling my 1500 song playlist/library. But musicmatch was worlds better than Winamp if only because of the horrible, terrible winamp skins. I still have all these programs preserved on an old harddrive somewhere.
But I agree we need to get serious about preservation. The wayback machine is good for somethings but there's so many sites that have already been lost forever. Some museum should set up an experience/simulation of what computing was like at different periods of time.
Remember the beautiful music of your modem connecting over dialup to earthlink? Remember IE 4 or 5.5? Certainly a better browser than netscape navigator but when I look back now I can't imagine surfing the net with that.
I would love to contribute to a simulation of computing history. We could create virtual machines of OS/programs at different points in time.
Remember Encarta Encyclopedia? It still runs in Vista. I still have the CD. It is priceless.

Amen! I remember those heady halcyon days on the Geocities Neighborhoods pre-Yahoo. I had several Geocities pages back then. (Area 51 Dunes anyone else?)None with comet cursors thank god. But they did have frames. And those terrible rainbow horizontal rules. *shudder*

I agree. I object to Turnitin on principle. It's not that I think students should be allowed to plagarize. I don't think we should a allow a single company to collect all the written work out there and store in perpetuity and then rate a students ideas as original or unoriginal. Anyone on Slashdot who is pro-Turnitin probably hasn't done their homework on the service. It essentially takes away a students right to control their own written work.
I refuse to send a paper to Turnitin since the company steadfastly will not delete it from their archives after scanning it. Only a professor/teacher can request to have a paper deleted. How is that fair? I wrote the paper. It is my work. I should have the choice of refusing to allow it be saved in their perpetual archives. I have called the company and written them about this. I do not have the resources to hire a lawyer. However, I still wish I could get my paper deleted from their archives.
As a graduating senior I can attest to the fact that I am incredibily worried. I started biting my nails again, a bad habit I haven't done since I was four. I barely sleep most nights.
My job offer which I have had since last August was just recinded and I have to find another job ASAP.
Many students' parents have lost a lot, if not all, their money. Meaning we have no safety net. If I don't find a job and a much cheaper place to live my going to be out on the street in three months and my parents may be too.
I'm just hoping not to end up homeless this year. I'm about to graduate having had my job offer recinded due the economy.
But I refuse to give up hope and just take any job. I believe I'll get my dream job because I have more drive than anyone else. If I fail, my parents and I will end up living on the street.
I have to admit to being a diehard Microsoft user despite all the bloatware and myriad problems with the OS. Because for every problem in Windows there's a work around somewhere (and it's not just switch to Linux, which I have used and do respect but don't feel I could comfortably switch to).
I'm like a Microsoft executive's wet fantasy - I own several Windows Vista machines, and XBox, and 2 zunes.
Yet this is exactly what I have feared. This sort of OS taking control of my machine rather than me is such a turn off it will probably drive me to Linux once and forever. I believe that since I bought the hardware, I should be able to use it as I see fit and the software shouldn't cripple me from doing that. It's my personal computer, I should have complete control over it. If I screw it up, then so be it. If I break laws then I deserve punishment. But I shouldn't have my hands tied from the beginning.
If Windows 7 allows Adobe to mess with my Firewall settings then that's the final straw. It's basically the implementation of trusted computing on a software level which spells doom for the user.
As another PA resident I whole heartedly agree. These were kids who made one mistake and are going to feel the repercussions for years throughout their college and professional lives.
All of the cases this man judged will have to be examined to see whether the punishment fit the crime.
As a law student do you know what will happen to these kids? Will their sentences stand? Will they have a note added onto their record to show they may not have deserved Juvee?
What movie studios fail to realize is that so-called "pirates" who download the movie are often it's biggest fans. I won't name names, but I know some one who went to see it openning weekend, then downloaded a pirated cam recording, and is now going to see it a second time. Why? Because it was so good this person wanted to be able to watch scenes a second time at their leasiure in the comfort of their home.
Movie studios often fail to see their biggest fault that helps pirates the most: The incredibly stupid and archaic distribution timelines. Why do movies debut in America before they come out in another country? If I lived overseas and was desperate to see The Dark Knight, but it came out several weeks after it did in America, I would probably download a cam version ahead of time because I'm impatient.
Why do we even do exclusive distribution periods? Why do movies come out in theatres, then airplanes, pay-per-view, rentals, DVDs, and then cable? Why not have them come out for download or DVD the same time as in theatres?
Some people like to watch movies in the comfort of their homes and will not go to theatres. Often times this includes older viewers who dislike loud, dark movie theatres.
I know the Apple fanboys and Gmail Sheep don't want to hear it but it needs to be said. Just because a company's motto is "Do no evil" doesn't mean it's living up to it. Just because it may be the best/dominant search engine right now doesn't mean you should use it. Frankly, Google having a monopoly on internet searches is a little frightening. It's like having only one company that controls the TV, only one that controls newspapers, or one that controls radio (oh wait Clear Channel).
Now combine that with all your email. And your mobile phone usage. This becomes the best consumer targeting data in the world. Not to mention a potential land mine of privacy woes.
What happened to the old Google motto? "Don't be evil."
Oh wait they gave that up long ago.
Am I the only person who thinks Google's grown too large lately and should be split up. They're worse than Microsoft now. They have their fingers in everyone's pies. Search, online work collaboration, email, maps, digital video, and so on...

As a hot and crazy girl, I am forced to agree with this logic.
Just to park my car at home and at work would cost me $2400 a year. That's not including car insurance, maintaince, or gas.
I own a car, but it's just not affordable to have one here, so it's parked at my parent's home and they use it.
