You still don't get it, do you?
First we sent you a freezing winter, and now we've demonstrated a taste of our other WMDs. Are you sure you're not ready to surrender yet?
Man discovered both of these methods for measuring time - he didn't create the properties being measured.
You can measure distance with a stick and you can also measure it more precisely by observing how far light travels within a given time. Who's the loser now?
If you think that all men should have the same rights to life, freedom etc, you're forced to the logical conclusion of quantity. But you're right that it may not be the wisest choice if the wisdom criteria includes factors such as financial health of the city.
homosexuality was much more widely accepted historically than it is now
Oh I don't know about that one. Maybe in some countries, but e.g. in much of Europe legislation is getting better and better, with equal rights for those in homosexual marriages. As for public opinion, in my country the pre-minister is a 70 year old lesbian. And we couldn't care less.
The town has 3000 inhabitants but only 2000 vaccine doses in store
Gather all non-whites, gay, retarded, left-handed and red-haired people in town. If the total number of these is less than 1000, add in feminists and Man Utd followers. Then have a lottery for total_number_of_unwanted_people-1000. In addition to achieving the desired effect, this will make the minority survivors forever grateful to me, the Führer.
Yet on any article about the government on/. it's a simple matter of time when reading the comments before one compares whatever the privacy violation of the day is to 1984. Which generally makes it hard to take seriously.
Does it? Besides slippery slope and all that, technology is increasingly being used for big-brother activities. CCTVs, airport scanners and who knows what the NSA and Homeland security are doing behind our back. And you can be very certain that more oppressive regimes are doing what they can to spy on their people.
Honestly, no, I don't think it's ridiculous for someone in the modern era, in a first world country, to expect health care in perpetuity.
This is seriously one of the most idiotically short-sighted and uninformed comments ever posted to Slashdot. It stands as a testament to why the West is doomed to failure, and completely deserves all the death panels and totalitarian government that is headed our way. I am in absolute awe of the fact that it has been modded up.

Only if you turn into the stupid kind that can't do anything productive anymore, like driving a car, using internet services and avoid getting your (mindless) head being blown up. The rest of us cancel our accounts so undeath is just business as usual, with different food preferences.
Offtopic - I find it funny to see so very often when people use the word moron to describe others, that they would have been spot on had they been talking about themselves.
Anyway, I like coding in Java and Python. PHP just looks ugly, even beer vision can't help with that. I don't enjoy C/C++, but that's mostly because I've forgotten the tricks necessary for not blowing up your neighborhood accidentally.
On the contrary, scientifically and/or philosophically minded people would care a lot, for obvious reasons. Fundamentally religious people would also care a lot, for different reasons. People belonging to neither group would not easily escape knowledge of such a discovery, due to heated arguments that are bound to follow between the two groups.
which in turn boosts the ongoing fission reaction in the spark plug, which in turn boosts the ongoing fusion reaction. Finally it produces a neutron flux which detonates and consumes the secondary casing (depleted uranium, U-238).
Dear sir
I would like to personally thank you for helping us the great people of North Korea to finalize our procedures.

The guy doesn't even define what he means by "freer"!
Uh, it's defined right here:
In recent years I've seen privacy, free expression and civil liberties steadily eroded, and I can't see anything changing for the better any time soon. With people being banned from the UK for expressing (admittedly reprehensible) opinions, the continuing efforts to implement mandatory ID cards and the prospect of a Conservative government in the near future, I'm seriously considering emigrating to a less restrictive country. Which countries would you recommend in terms of freedom and privacy?
So, freedom of press probably weighs in more heavily than economic freedom. And it's obvious that the poster is most concerned about privacy and personal rights.
Anyway, degrees of economic freedom in western countries usually only refer to how much paperwork/fees are needed to do/start business, you can have most types of business in most western countries without much hassle.
I'm afraid this advice doesn't translate well to programming projects, however. You can't skip bits of code and let the end user imagine them. Although you might skip over the boring bits of code and focus on the fun bits first, and later return to the boring bits when everything else is done, because otherwise it just won't work. Doing boring stuff that's essential to get the fun stuff working isn't nearly as bad as doing boring stuff that won't do anything meaningful until I've gotten around to the fun stuff later.
I don't entirely agree with that. You can often hotwire boring parts with sensible hardcoded defaults, that you later mean to make somehow configurable. If your default values are sensible enough, it may even turn out that you don't need to do the skipped boring bits at all.
That's one way of thinking.
I aim to make myself redundant so I don't get stuck doing the same things over and over. If you're valued, you will get new interesting stuff instead of repeated boredom.
I'm a programmer, but I guess I'd be doing the same if it was some admin or helpdesk job.
If you try to fail and succeed at it, what the hell have you just done?
Ah, I see what you're doing here. Perpetual energy by dead philosophers spinning in their graves?

Never before have I seen a more valid reason to post as AC.
Is it wise to encourage quantity not quality?

And we get a car analogy as well - thank you.

Just wait till thought/feeling reading gets perfected
That's when BotnetZombie's Tinfoil Productions will finally become profittable.

all you lose is your cash
This is great news for the US government if it plays its cards right:
1. Hand out contaminated cash
2. Confiscate
3. ???
4. Profit!

Here's what really happened back then
If I hadn't already commented before, I'd mod this up. GP is way off in many of his assertions.

Does anyone know if this pixel-lensing technique can help in finding earth-size planets in our local galaxy?
