As somebody who crossed to the other side- I can agree.
I got a nice 50" plasma and decided it was time to upgrade to blu-ray to make sure I'm geting the most out of my set. So I went out and bought myself a nice Sony Blu-ray player and set out for an adventure. At first I was a little dissapointed, I needed a flash drive to get BD-LIVE to work, but none the less I was determined to get everything out of my $300 that I just plopped down. I plugged in my USB drive and started up BD-Live, only to find out it's literally just trailers for other movies. Why is this a feature? There are other "BD-Live" apps, which if I recall correctly, are written in Java. I always thought the idea of Java really opened up the doors for the platform, but it turns out nobody cares, nobody's trying for anything revolutionary. There's a program to Re-Edit a movie with your own notes and captions, and there's this trailer app. And you need the disc in to use them.
To keep this short, I'll say this, the BD-Live features seemed like something the studios should be paying me for. I really don't understand why a new venue for advertising to me is a feature I should be excited about.
Anyway, the picture quality itself was good, but rewind, fast foward and similar features responded so slowly, that they were useless. It felt like the remote just wasn't connecting- but if you pressed the button once and waited five minutes, it would eventually pause/rewind/fast foward.
I decided I didn't like it, and returned it for a samsung with netflix and pandora- oh what a mistake that was. The features were minimal. No animated menus, clunky browsing, impossibly slow, same issues as the last- but this one had tracking off on both digital and analog audio signals. I can't make my audio receiver make the audio faster- only delay. The TV, unfortunately, don't have any such feature for the delay. How annoying.
TLDR; Blu-Ray has been aroung long enough that it should be a stable technology. They're selling shit for big prices trying to convince people it's better, but it's worse than DVD (and dvds and players are cheap). There's no reason to upgrade. Even if the picture is nicer, I don't care.
P.S. I'm returning my last Blu-Ray and not buying a new one.
That said your argument is nonsensical. When talking about physical products you have no guarantee of quality either yet we don't allow you to steal and then decide whether or not to pay for it. What you do have is reviews and consumer reports. The same holds true for entertainment media.
So, like, walmart doesn't let you return items you didn't like? Wait a second..
Well, living in the Boston area, I can say that locally I am better than 80% of the drivers - due to the fact that, at the very least, I use my signal when turning/changing lanes. That's gotta count for something...
You know what would fix the "first post syndrome? Just a simple word count requirement with a count-down timer and a filter for particular words.. if any variation of URLS or FIRST or FROSTY PISS show up, it requires you to wait 2 minutes before submitting. It would be a gamble, and you would unlikely end up the first post troll- and it would cut down on the desire to do it, since it's rarely possible. More often relevant posts would end up #1, even though they clicked submit later.
I read somewhere that statistically, airplanes are safer than cars, you're more likely to die in a car accident.
I also read a quote somewhere else of somebody saying "Airplanes might be safer than cars, but I'd rather arrive at my destination with a false sense of security than feel like I've narrowly escaped death."
Also- I personally believe statistics aren't all they're cracked up to be. When I'm in control of a situation VS when I'm not. I think I can personally change my chances of survival in a car by not speeding... Maybe only a few percentage points, but still- statistics are cold hard ideas, but don't account for personal decisions.
Statistically, 1 in X number of men will have a heart attack- but eating healthy and excersizing changes your odds. You're not just a sitting duck, y'know?
I hate people who decide something that envokes a little (or a lot) of emotion is something that shouldn't be dealt with. You're the type who things that if an argument gets heated, it should just be swept under the rug.
Persuit of truth is a good thing- and in arguments or personal relationships, it's crucial for a healthy relationship.
Likewise- understanding the cause of their deaths is important for those greiving, but also does a service to help avoiding problems like that in the future- or at least informing people of the odds so they can make an informed decision in the future.
Which is why, in movies and stories, those who have achived full enlightenment are often completely apathetic of just about everything. They are often not interested in the outcome of anybody or anything. They understand things from a higher plane.
Enlighten me, why would proving a theory that is another step toward a GUT be a negative step?
Well, you see, string theory is very complex, but really in the 2d universe we truly live in, it can be considered a negative step, but you won't understand it, because your used to only experiencing the 2 real dimensions and the incredible faux 3rd dimension, which is a construct of our brains to understand the space which we perceive. Anyway, the point is, if you really understand string theory, you see the negative step. But if you're standing behind the theory, it's a positive step. It's all relative.

What's interesting, for me, about other search engines and their "usability" is the fact that my eyes are trained to parse google results. Google search results look official and informative. I can't use Yahoo or MSN (or Bing for this matter) because their search results look sterile.
Sometimes it's the lack of information- as little as giving me the page size (7kb). Sometimes it's the margins. Bing has a left margin. Google doesn't.
I'm not saying that these differences make a BAD difference, except this: Internet users learn quickly about scams. The first time I accidentally clicked on those fake search results on an ad-search mis-direction page, I learned to pick up on these differences quickly.
In fact, it's subtle, but you can usually tell when a computer has an infection that hijacks your google results- because they don't look right (older infections changed the results, new ones redirect REAL results.. but that's a different conversation).
The point is- my mouse won't go near, let alone click, on things that I think are tricks or advertisements. For some reason, I trust google a lot. So much that my eyes are trained to see it's results and disregard others. I'm reluctant to click on bing results.
I encourage slashdot users to try bing out, and tell me it doesn't look foreign to you! Tell me you don't feel weird clicking it's results! The internet trains you quickly that you are to embrace familiarity, because you will be quickly punished for not doing so.
Holy crap- you are, what we in the biz call, an over-reacting parent. Calm down and take it easy before you destroy your daughter's life.
That being said- verizon has an application for cell phones that lets you track your children- it's on get it now. I'm sure other carriers have something similar.
I didn't know there was a matrix MMO- and I'm pissed to hear it's shutting down, because I would've played it. No point in signing up now though. Shame.
I think the point of having the lawyers there (or mentioning it) is to say that what they're planning may be very borderline. They've got the lawyers there to advise against getting nailed for antitrust- but it clearly means they're bouncing ideas that could be on the other side of that line...
In other words, it means their intentions are definitely not pure.
Windows XP (and maybe vista, not sure) don't come with an MPEG-2 Decoder built in. You either need to buy powerdvd (or the like) or get quick time alternative . I think K-lite has one as well.
Once you have the codec, yes, windows media player will play DVDs. But on a fresh install, windows pcs are missing the codec for an ordinary DVD.
Guess what guys. What you did was basic. You remembered my song history. Along with twitter, I consider you to be one of the most simple web "2.0" tools on the net today. You have a crowd, but not a complex or clever execution.
She wouldn't make a good Harley Quinn. Although I'd love to see A Harley Quinn in the next movie. But I don't know how I feel about Harley without the Joker. And they BETTER not bring back the joker without Heath Ledger.
It appears that hypokalaemia can be caused by excessive consumption of three of the most common ingredients in cola drinks â" glucose, fructose and caffeine.
So first off, Yes, Diet makes a difference- lacking two of the ingredients. And Diet Caffeine free is just fine. Additionally, these three inrgedients are not cola exclusive. Coffee (from dunks with liquid sugar), Root Beer, and other drinks, I'm sure, could find yourself in the same dillema.
I'm annoyed at this doomsday article (not just TFS, but TFA) which is totally shock value, and one paragraph of truth.
But then again, I suppose I should get used to that.
I like the sentiment however it has very little baring on driving, most drivers can pass tests, that doesn't mean to say they will drive outside the test in anything like a safe manner.
While I agree- I must point out- I'm not sure how it's done in other places, but in NH, USA, we take a test twice. Once to get your license. And again at 50-something to renew it.
In between, no additional testing is required.
I believe most the people on the road these days couldn't pass the test (not even fake it) because they're truely not aware of the rules anymore.
I betcha most of them would forget to signal. And they'd definitely tailgate.
Without some timeless being which created everything, there is no absolute truth, which means that morality is a construct of society, and reflects the values of that society.
But as long as you're in line with society, you're probably ok- you don't need a higher being, right? I mean, we can all accept that killing is wrong, don't need Jesus to tell us that.
But then again, I'm sure people thought slaves were just fine too, back in slavery days, since it was right in the eyes of society. You can see how morality and ethics change with society.
Morality is a slippery subjective thing. Having a single point of truth makes it easier. Not neccessarily right, just easier.

I would pay hefty amounts of cash to watch the tv show 'Q'
Those among us who know, would probably pay as well.

Right, it's the time machine that breaks that concept. Records were destroyed? Why not go back in time.. to get the records?

I'm guessing they use the GPS to determine speed zone, and the speedometer to calculate actual speed.
