Can you have a fun tech job, without the worry of being suddenly unemployed?
More importantly - can you have a job without the worry of being suddenly unemployed? The answer, as over 80,000 airline industry workers found out recently, is no. What do you do then? Work where you can and when you can and develop a life OUTSIDE work where you can have fun. Minimize work hours and increase fun hours as possible. Why is it that people now want to have FUN at WORK!??! Work hard. (go home). Play hard.
If you are you forced (as I am) to get your fun on the side what are some good projects to get involved in?
Change your thinking from being work-centered to being life-centered. Have a job in order to make a living. Then have a life in order to live it! Stop thinking of yourself worth as measured by your job. Breathe fresh air, see a movie, walk in the park, raise a family, pursue spiritual reality, drive off-road monster trucks, basketweave, invent things in your garage, clean your room, learn to paint, fight paintball wars...
I'm speaking to myself. For the past few years I have given up all but the most important aspects of my life (my wife and two kids) in order to devote more time to work. For the next two weeks I'm in lock-down to finish a project.
What do you to unwind and have a bit of 'fun' in the workplace?"
Leave on time. Spend time doing something else with people you love.
... to sell a web page building application and then say it can't be used for promoting pornography. Doesn't MS realize that 99% of web content is pictures of naked ladies?
Dude, the 'Net is bigger than your Favorites list...
Note that this was using a "high speed optical link," not competing with email, viruses, or other things being sent on the Internet.
Other "things" being Code Red, Code Red ][, Code Blue, Nimda, and other features of MS IIS...
It would be nice for critical applications, such as surgery, critical teleconferencing,... downloading KDE 2.X..., to pay a couple bucks (X 10) and be on a dedicated route to the other end. Over the Internet, I mean. For the vast majority of Internet usage the passive routing is fine but for a small percentage, it is too happenstance to be trusted. What would it take (besides Internet][, I mean) to have a dedicated route option?
This link is a Google search results page of studies showing greatly increased productivity from telecommuters. This is, perhaps, the best approach to take once you've earned trust as an employee.
A statement like this is meant to strike fear in the hearts of those people he "fingered" or people who may associate with them. Isn't that the core definition of Terrorism...
You're right, Fawell, while not part of the atrocities on Tuesday, is piggy-backing on the tragedies to promote his ideological viewpoints. Not much different than the rejoicing Palestinians.
Yes, I'm a Christian. Yes, I wept when Rev. Billy Graham spoke today annoucing, unashamedly, the Gospel of Jesus Christ at the National Cathedral. And, yes, I rejoiced to hear the Muslim cleric standing with OTHER Americans on this day of prayer. But, I cannot stomach the transcript I have read in that Washington Post article. May the author of those words be shamed at the Lord's appearing.
Thanks you for fighting to stay up and serving our need to be connected during this atrocity. Really.
Thank you also for posting this story on how you did it. Could I make a request (to be filled, perhaps, when things are calm and the great debates return to KDE vs GNOME, MS vs... everybody, etc.) that someone post a more technical report on the technologies and configurations Slashdot used to server a 3x load? Something that the lesser admins and developers out here could use to buttress our sites (from, I guess, the threat of being linked on your front page!) against surges?
I loved NetBSD on my Workpad z50 and look forward to trying this new version on the Thinkpad 750 (486 DX with 8BM RAM and 350 MB HD) I just got from eBay. It's great to turn these "out of date" machines into powerful multiuser network servers.
If you're for continued freedoms it would behoove you to band together with like-minded folk regardless of agreements on freely expressed ideas. If you truly believe in "I'll fight to the death your right to say it" then you'll put aside your opinions to fight togther for the basic right to be free.
Unless, of course, by freedom you mean freedom to express your singular viewpoint. That is not a freedom, that's a tyranny.
Alas, you wouldn't know truth if it leapt up and burrowed into your ass.
Do make the effort to become informed, RJames. Pulling the "victim" card will only earn you disgusted looks from the civilized world.
Thank you for excercising your rights uniquely guaranteed by the US Constitution and enforced by the blood of its citizens to mock and denegrate this great, free and just nation and society.
Do we sacrifice our freedoms for security, or do we build on our freedoms? These are not easy answers. That's why the level of commitment behind them is so important. Our freedom is who we are and what our nation is founded on. Our freedom is the fabric of our success as a country. Our freedom is an essential element within each and every one of our spirits - the American spirit - and it is what we must hold onto during this time of what feels like unbearable shock.
For this country to be put back together and resume its lofty place, for this country to become even stronger than what it was, is going to require the people of this country doing what they've always done in the past during times like this. We must band together and defend our freedom, which is what separates us from our enemies. Our freedom was attacked and our freedom will be defended. On that, my friends, I am utterly confident - you can stake your life on it.
Overly strong strikes against the countries involves actually helps them. The previous US retaliation against a vaccine factory in the Sudan did not make the US any friends, or prevent this attack. British security measures in Northern Ireland made the IRA much stronger.... But was Vietnam a good war ? Afghanistan ? The Bay of Pigs ?
You're right - these did not have any positive effect. But neither were these Wars. The time for "retaliation" and "measured response" is over. No "police actions" or "defensive strategies" now. Now is the time for an actual full-out War.
No, civilians (even those bastards rejoicing Tuesday) should NOT be targeted. Yes, the object should be the overthrow of the political and ideological leaders of terrorist-sponsoring/harboring nations. That will change things. That will require War.
What will the next ask slashdot be?
What is a good OS?
What is a good computer?
Why not go to a site that deals with newbie's
wait that's slashdot now. Never mind
I give up slashdot is doomed to be what it is now, and no one can change that..... shitty.
Then, leave. Bye bye. Won't miss your arogant, nothing-to-contribute attitude.
I know the asking party mentioned the power requirements of an old (or, I guess, new) PC as a NAT/Router/etc., but the power drain ain't too bad (unless you leave a monitor on for this server...). Besides, not only can you easily set up (see the How-Tos at Linux Documentation Project) a server to do NAT (great for multiple boxes sharing a "one connection only" xDSL/Cable modem connection), DHCP, cipe tunneling to secured office computers, but also to enable a web server (it's actually a last-hope backup server to one of our production systems), SSH "telenet" server for remote access, FTP daemon. With a little care a simple PC will give you tremendous network services that far surpass the capabilities of these network devices. And the investment in terms of $$$s may be much less (in time, more, but what's the fun of not learning?).
Thank you. This cannot be said too many times, no matter how many moderators reactively moderate as redundant.

'Islamic Fundamentalism' is a reaction to sustained policies of the West, led by America.
Bullshit. Yours is a simplistic explanation for a complex religio-political phenomenon -- one thing for sure, Fundementalist Moslems would be offended at your characterization. As a matter of fact, your true colors are shown by your premise: you have a beef against the US and give a free pass to terrorism as a result of perceived (imagined?) US atrocities.
What do Germany, Japan, Italy, Britain have in common? Yes, they were once mortal enemies of the US and we fought each other to the death. But, War changed things and now we fight FOR each other and Against each other's enemies to the death. Do not lie that War doesn't change things. A righteous war not fought is an evil omission.
And I hope that they do just kill the terroist groups, and not make a tragic situation more tragic by draging more innocent people into this whole thing.
If you had said this, clearly, at the outset I would have said, "Yes, I agree."
I'm ready to hug any American or non-American who is for humanity, democracy, freedom and peace (even if peace first requires war as it so often does). I don't care if they are moslem, Jewish, Baptist (no Southern Baptists, though...just kidding), atheist.
But I refuse to recognize or reject someone solely based on ethnicity, race, religion, culture, gender, or s.p.
Just 'cause you live near me, look like me, worship with me, eat like me doesn't mean I accept you or side with you. You must adhere to certain principles before I will sup with you.
I just got this, too. On the bottom there is an 800 number to contact the sender. I've deleted my copy -- after leaving a couple of messages to the sender (per his invitation). Since I've lost the number, could someone post that toll-free number again, I forgot there was something else I wanted to add...
Now that we know terrorists will use the plane as a huge bomb to kill thousands of other innocents and not just hijack the plane, taking hostages to get publicity for their causes this will not happen again. No, from now on when a person threatens to hijack a plane every able person on board will recall Sep 11, 2001 and give their life. Moreover, the pilots will ditch the plane if there is even the hint of the terrorists trying to take over flight operations.
Your mindset is influenced by your knowledge of the outcome of the hijackings. Never before has anything like this been attempted. I doubt any popular fiction has had the same concept -- yes, I know about the JAL 747 in Clancy's book (title?) but the protagonist there was the official pilot of the foreign aircraft, not an onboard terrorist. Working with what information they had of the intentions of terrorists they would have been broadsided -- as you would have, too.

Leave on time. Spend time doing something else with people you love.Q. In situations like this, what should a company do to bring such a glaring GPL violation back into compliance?
A. Meet the terms of the license governing the non-original products. All the terms.

I'm getting, with the other Windows-specific attacks, one Non-Windows specific (rather a perl/CGI specific) attack: a request for "libwww-perl/5.51".

Refreshing news.
Unless, of course, by freedom you mean freedom to express your singular viewpoint. That is not a freedom, that's a tyranny.
That would be "victim".
It is inappropriately worded. Period.

Hijackers will never be treated the same again.
It's good to report leads to the authorities, but don't obsess over things like this.
