  1. Re:Only Vista on Windows 7 Upgrade Can Take Nearly a Day · · Score: 1

That may be the best windows metaphor I've ever heard.

And it accurately describes why I always do clean installs instead of updates. Its become such a part of my standard procedure that when I upgraded my Mac to 10.6, I did a clean install even though I've never had a bit of trouble with upgrading OS X.

But you bet your bippy I'll do a clean install with Vista -> Win7. My only regret is Steam will have to re-download my games, which will probably take a day or so.

Yep. The major US chains (Regal, AMC, Ultrastar) all have unassigned seating. Basically first-come first-pick. So if you want to get a seat in the middle that is a reasonable distance from the screen you had best arrive 30-40 minutes before showtime and camp out in those seats until the movie starts.

I would trust my money ( Heck, I do trust my money) to a ITMS style micropayment model. Whenever I buy something from the iTunes store it prompts me for my password and then after the fact emails me a reciept. If Apple can do it, Google can do it.

Of course, do I WANT to pay to see news stories on the web? No I don't. But I could see that someone might.

This is probably the future for most video games. Just like iTunes and Amazon were the "future" of music. There are a lot of people who just want to play their games and don't really care about resolution, compression noise and even a bit of latency. I figure a majority of people will use these services.

However, there is always going to be a market for games that doesn't involve this model. I like my Quad core 8gb ram gaming rig, and the fact that I can run a game at ungodly resolution. I like running community developed mods that the publisher may not endorse, or even approve of. There is a number of people who feel the same way. Also, as far as single player games go, I can run my 360 or PS3 without an internet connection and play them to my heart's content. My DS and PSP both have wi-fi, but I can't remember the last time i bothered to connect them.

Locally hosted gaming will always exist, but I do believe that this may well be the last generation we see this many devices on the market. One of the big 3 will probably bow out (or buy into one of the streaming services) after the next generation, especially if one of these services takes off in a big way.

Why YOU would want it? I don't know. I don't know you.

The average end user wants iPod + iTunes becasue it is easy to use, and designed to work together from the onset. You can buy an app or a track, download it and load it to your media player all through the same application. Its Apple's "walled garden" approach. You can't do everything (not by a long shot) but what it does is easy for the end user to understand.

Apple isn't after the average /.er, they are after the millions of people who use a computer because they HAVE to, not so much because they want to.

I always thought it was as much an intimidation tool as actual armor. Kind of like a Samurai Mask. A sea of white "monster faced" troops running at you would be pretty intimidating. Well, intimidating until they start shooting and it becomes obvious that there is no marksmanship taught at the Imperial Academy.
