  1. Exchange It! on Ask Slashdot: How To Deal With Refurbed Drives With Customer Data? · · Score: 1

I'd be worried that it was not even refurbished, but connected up, and it seemed to work properly, so they just reboxed it, and off it went to Newegg. Especially if the manufacturer of the drive has ever had a firmware update for it. Many times the refurb will look at the problem, and try to decide if it was hardware or software related, and if they decide software, then reflash it, and move on to the next one in the pile (hello smartphones).

If you look closely at it, does it show any differences compared to the other two? Warranty Void stickers, screw head marks, screw torque, anything that might indicate it was handled with a different process than the other two you have?

It sounds like it doesn't have the same diag partition as the others, how was it verified?

I'd ask for a new one, and not stop asking til it is the same as the other two.

    Cheers

I asked one of the main AVR designers from Norway if it was ok to set a configuration, or a constant in RAM during initialization and trust with 100% certainty that it would not change during operation. He said that even on the worlds cleanest power supply, and absent the presence of any EMI, he would still NOT recommend it.

If you run 10 AVRs for 1000 hours you will see bits flipped. Many times it only effects a RAM variable that is constantly being recalculated anyways, so it causes little if any disruption to the operation of the device.

It really sucks when its something critical like a timer counter control register.

If anyone would like to duplicate my testing, I'd be glad to send code, but all you have to do is set everything to a known value, and then read it over and over til it changes. It doesn't take as long as you think (or hoped) it would! It also gives you a good idea on how well your PCB takes care of your Micro.

Always check, and if necessary, reset your hardware configs during runtime! Those "all of the sudden it started acting up, so I turned it off and back on again and it was fine" problems just disappear!

I still remember the time my CON_0 register read 8! Although I'm sure it'll happen again, you'll never notice it!

Never let it blindly execute a subroutine just because that's where the program counter is! You have to know that when something executes, that it really should execute to prevent bad from becoming really really bad.

The normal what to do, is the easy (20%) part, the should I do it, and what if I can't, is what makes a system reliable.

Just went through that whole mess. There is a whole list of things you can ask for back as a victim / witness, if they are unrecoverable (used for evidence, or destroyed in testing for evidence, or otherwise lost or damaged ) you submit a claim for the cost of replacements.

You have to fill out a Victim Restitution Form as part of your Victim Impact Statement. This is provided by the prosecution, and added to the defendants charges.

So it sounds to me like they will conveniently add your losses to the charges against MU. If they cannot afford to pay, the state and fed governments have money set aside to help reimburse you, but somehow I just see it added to MU's bill.

Which lessons were fun, any thoughts on what a 6th grade kid could put in a database. How come this won't save. We were middle school IT department #1.

They gave us access to all the documentation, even the teachers editions to help figure out how it all worked. Networked Apple ][ GS with the school server and Appletalk network.

One of the girls came up with a diary, so part of what everyone did for computer class was keep a diary on your floppy disk, and we used to copy them over appletalk after the class would start working on something else:)

Miss Irene, My floppy drive is running, oh it stopped, never mind.
