It's small, light and silent, and it even comes with a decent remote and HDMI cable. I paid under AUD150 for mine, and I swear by it.
You can install a hard drive if you like, or attach USB dries, but I just go straight off the network (ethernet). It does also have wireless, but I don't recommend it.

While I agree that Java is a little over-engineered for some purposes, I'm frankly getting a wee bit tired of all these weakly-typed languages that people are using for Web development. I'll take C# or Java any time rather than all this duck-typing crud. You can take Ruby, Python, PHP and all their ilk and stick them where the sun don't shine.
People tend to excuse using these scripting toys by saying "it's only a little website", but these things tend to grow and, growing, to become unmanageable messes. You might be able to get things done, but there are a lot of risks in that approach. I'll take a more rigorous approach any day, and I speak as one who has spent decades working with ill-disciplined languages.

You've got my vote. For that matter, a pure mathematician isn't likely to be happy hacking code. Take somebody who has done well in maths to a given level, and that person probably has the logical skills that a programmer needs. Among other important factors, of course. A wizard coder who can't communicate, or who won't follow instructions, or who can't organise his/her time, or who smells because s/he doesn't wash, or... well, you get the drift.
A talent for maths is part of what makes a good programmer, but by no means is it the only part, or even the most important part.

This idea sounds like it'd make it easy to copy a cheque, Photoshop it and bank it. You wouldn't even need to steal it. Just snap a quick shot with your iPhone and then slip it back. Just make sure you get it in before the owner and you're done.

What happens is that people will take it and index it and then you get debt collectors and private investigators calling you and asking and asking questions about your neighbours. Illegal? Yes, but it happens. And anybody who knows your phone number can find out where you live. A win for common sense? Maybe, but also a loss for privacy.

All of that and more. The Java APIs are so deeply mired in complex, circular design patterns that it can be a Sisyphean task just to find your way around. Compare XML handling in .Net to the mess that is the Java equivalent. And even that mess didn't actually become remotely useable until 1.5.

Or look at the Swing libraries as compared to the .Net visual class library. Try doing something useful with a JTable. Feel that pain? I know it well.

Other things? Web services are just so easy to write in .Net. And the .Net web controls are so easy to use, though far from perfect - they sometimes feel like a beta product, but better than anything provided by Sun.

I'm a long-time Java programmer, but C# has been winning me over for some time now. Now, I'll only develop in Java if I really, really want non-windows platform support.
