well, yeah - were that the case, then yes that would be cheaper. but on the higher level porn - they aren't crack addicts working for $20 - they are working at $1000/hr and up.
but to do it at the level of a game in terms of graphics (real time rendering) it would not cost nearly that - not to mention that once you have one model developed - you effectively have an infinite number (changing their look is easy once it is there).
I would put it more at development of a solid model and perhaps viewing engine at $100,000 and a year. Once done you could do a crapload of stuff and make it customizable, as well as making a subscriber interface (EverQuest with sex).
I have worked with the game technologies and know what is there, and have talked to people on the outside of porn well enough to know that your view of it is misguided (not saying that there aren't drug addicts in the industry - eps at lower levels).
I don't understand why this isn't done across the board with porn stars. considering how far they have come in 3d these days - just scan in a model for cheap and then they can do far more work. hell, you could even get rough mo-cap done once at a franction of the cost of needing her around all the time. the audio is obviously even easier than the carson thing.
hell - you could have a system where you customize it so that the person watching it can choose what they want - color hair, skin tone, % bodyfat, etc. or even to the point of doing famous people, etc.
is it still cheaper to pay real people to do it all? I could see if the technology wasn't there, but it would seem people would line up even at the level of playstation is right now.
then again, I'm not really all that much into porn, so perhaps this is already out there and I'm just out of the loop.
I've been enjoying spamassassin now and then I thought about ways around it, just as a matter of curiosity.
the image approach that you mention there is the first thing that I thought of, and it made me want to work on a way around it. I know enough about image recognition that I could write a script to use that image as input and scan it and treat it as text - then run it through spamassassin.
it could be an add on to spamassassin... but at this point, not enough spam is coming in that format to me (meaning "none") for me to worry too much about it.
the worst nonspam I've ever seen (personally) was a 3.9, so I set mine to filter out everything 4.0 and up into a "caughtspam" mailbox.
I didn't use the *'s in the subject (which was standard in older versions, but I'm running the devel 2.50 that has that off by default) because I find them annoying and since the bulk of my mail is spam anyway, scanning through them doesn't work well with my attention span.
so in the end, I write scripts to scan it all for me.
fortunately, the bulk of my mail I can either focus on the people on the whitelist, or it is a certain address that I have to read all the mail that goes to it for business purposes (and if that starts to get bad, I will start putting spamassassin on that as well).
I can just imagine what she was saying:
Hot stuff, do you want to keep an erection all night long without drugs?!
I will give you HOT WET SEX all night long for FREE!!!!!
ACT NOW or I might give up my SWEET TEEN ASS to someone else.
that wasn't how I pictured the letter - I was just writing that to you because you sound hot.
I see no way at all this could *ever* lead to any sercurity issues. things connected to the internet rarely have any real problems with people abusing them, so I don't think this will have any issues at all.
and besides, shells don't let you do much anyways.
I bought my fiancee's uncle and his family an XBox and a few games for xmas. they love the thing... so they say. I have yet to play one, but I have carried one around.
I on the other hand bought a used ps2 and play it pretty regularly - I suck at pretty much all the "normal" games and as a result play a lot of Tiger Woods golf which I'm good at (and I suspect everyone is if I am).
I'm not really sure I care which I use - the main reason I got the ps2 was so I could later get the game The Getaway as well as the GTA3 series - but now that reviews have panned the former and the latter are too hard/boring for me, I suppose it really doesn't matter (they are boring in the sense that I'm so bad at them that I lose interest quickly).
my ex stepmom tried to compost (just our food waste/trash - no human waste) when we lived in Rochester. she was too cheap/lazy/dumb to buy a container designed for the process, and instead made a large pile in the corner of our small, chain link fence surrounded back yard. as a result, rats found their way into our backyard and had a feast, and the neighbors reported us to the city, which then fined us and gave us X amount of time to fix the problem or some largely penatly would come about.
I was abolutely mortified and furious with her. she still didn't want to do anything about it, and for some reason failed to see how the rats and our "compost heap" were in anyway related.
that same batshit crazy woman thought she could teleport based on the electron tunneling theory, as well as turn objects into other objects (a bench into a banana), and of course she also felt she was psychic. she felt that she was evolving at a rate faster than the rest of us and was the bleeding edge of what human kind would become.
I on the other hand felt that she was totally insane and I feared her.
I'm very glad that she never saw this article, or she for sure would have tried to somehow follow it, but with slight variations that would have made the world of difference and embarrassed me even more so in my high school years.
I have no idea where that woman is now, but I hope she has since saught help.
so if you can send light over distances, that is cool for signal transfer without wires and/or need for a line of sight... but this is still pretty worthless in terms of sending people around (and turning them into half man half fly mutants).
the worst part about computer noise (and I'm sure there is some name for it in physics, and I'm sure someone else will point out what it is called) - but the noise gets in synch and amplifies - so it gets unbearable really quickly.
unrelated to that, you can get some neat cancellation things if you have two clean signals with two random noise overlays - if you combine them, the noise remains constant or cancels out (some amplifies, but not all), and then the cleans signal gets even stronger. An example of this is if you have ever been near two police cruisers that are next to each other and have their radios on. If they get a radio call - it will play on both of theirs and get REALLY loud. Caught me off guard when I first experienced it.
Now I'm seeing with my test cluster machines that they are loud and do that sort of thing as well. So I think I will fork over the extra $100 or so per node to make them much more quiet (I think queitpc.com or something like that sells everything to do that).
it saves me the cost of trying this out. I know that the PS2 isn't able to do openMosix since it isn't an x86 chip in there - but the xbox is, so I was curious about trying to cluster it that way (over beowulf types).
but I can price out a small system for under the cost of the xbox and mod chips, and that small system is actually faster.
so in the end, the only benefit would be the small size of the xbox. that and I'm not sure how loud they are - if the xbox gets decent performance and is very quiet (and ideally don't use much power), then that would be a reason to use them over a regular 2000 XP Athlon - but I'm pretty sure the latter would kick the Xbox's ass in terms of speed.
I think the stuff he and his group were working on was supposed to be really small. They had existing stuff that was large-ish (like what those links show), but then they wanted something as small as possible...
he doesn't do any of that any more, so I have no clue where they are at now - perhaps they gave up entirely. now he is in the biotech world designing automation robots and stuff - although he just took over a year off to travel the us and canada living out of his car and write a book.
no no no - you got it all wrong - I'm stringing letters together. not entire words. the words are simply an epiphenomena that you see as a result of me flailing away against my keyboard.
I just close my eyes and bang on the keys and then as a result, you see this.
as I understand the PC has faster hardware in the sense that American cars have more horsepower - they just throw a ton of power at the problem and don't worry about the effeciency. The Mac has the ability to do some cool wider pipline stuff and specialized vector processing - but you need to design stuff especially for it - otherwise it isn't as efficient and you lose to the big block Intel/AMD family.
I think the Playstation2 had this problem at first - it is *highly* optimized for vector processing and the first bit of releases for it hadn't taken full advantage of that.
If I can come up with a scenerio that is useful to me where I really *need* a mac, I'd consider it - but at this point, they are simply cute as hell and that is about it.
Back in the early 90's my dad was on some summer program where professors would go and do work for NASA and then during the year be the regular profs that they were.
He was an analytical chemistry professor and then for NASA worked on the water filtration system for the Space Station. The basic concept being that water is heavy at 8lbs/gal and so if they can limit how much they take up, they can use that saved weight towards carrying something else. So they wanted to bring up a small fixed amount and then recycle out the waste - so when you took a leak, it would recover that and clean it out (with very similar methods to this article interestingly enough), and then... according to my dad - was usually cleaner than the water they brought on.
I was always puzzled at why they didn't just bring on cleaner water - but I suppose he was also hinting at the astronauts bringing some inside themselves as well... don't know.
Anything that I buy has to spend some time in the oven - especially things like computers.
If they can't pass that crucial test, then I see no reason to ever use and/or buy them again.
The sencond crucial test is urinating on them.
done AND done.

Volume.
that is for sale as a poster on thinkgeek.com and I have it up at my desk right now here at work.

I know I've had sex with at least 40 different handhelds... usually still in the store.
