That's not entirely true. However, I don't think the internet can be drained.
Not drained but billions of (insert all magnetic storage here) can be discharged around the world. There is a way, but I don't want my door being kicked down in 5min for saying how.
My question is: Why the BIOS/firmware upgrade if they were working fine?
I have had dozens of machines over my career and never had a need to upgrade a BIOS or other firmware. There have been times when I thought about it, but read up on it and the warnings were clear as, "If you sneeze while this is updating, WARNING WILL ROBINSON! DANGER! DANGER! and then monkeys will crawl out of your ass!"
Even as a veteran system builder I don't even recommend updates of anything(even drivers) if the system is functioning normally. Then I think about what my dad said, "If it isn't broke, don't fix it."
In your defense, could you perhaps enlighten me on the purpose of the upgrade? It stated "critical by manufacturer" then it had to be something bad. I have had cars recalled for certain issues such as: The driver window will fail to roll down because the electrical switch won't make contact(I never brought that car in and never had a problem with the window). Another car had a problem with the cruise control never turning off, which caused the chip to over heat and catch fire(I had that car in the shop the next day). All in the severity...
Ah OK, thanks for clearing my eyeballs on that one.:) Went back, re-read and understand it more now.
I've never really understood the purpose of the UEFI though. I thought it was a dumb idea a while back when I first heard about it. I guess it is time I go freshen up my computer skills a bit. I been out of the game for over a decade.:/
I believe you misread the article. Taking Linux out of the equation still caused the problem.
I think the reason why it was most commonly found in Linux is that you can have several different variables to boot the system. Especially if you are one of those super custom freaks.:P
It needs to rewrite as: "Embrace a full test of the UEFI" or "Check storage limits on the UEFI"
Why they wouldn't put more storage on the UEFI, as cheap as it is, boggles my mind.
...and run as hot as the surface of the sun. So does my AMD FX 8120. I had to go liquid cooling to get that temp down. No heatsink & fan could get it done.

@Jane Q. Public: I think this is the first one I have heard about dealing with the physical aspect. Of course, I have been under a rock for a while.
My 8yr old son has more qualifications...he doesn't need to read his hand for the answers and he can actually stay on track with conversation even though he has an attention problem.
I actually thought this before I clicked the comments link.
I'm not a programmer. Tried it when I was 14-17 and didn't much care for it. Did hardware and tech support work for the next 10yrs, obtained A+ cert and the little bit of networking experience landed me my current job. My networking experience has increased dramatically, but I always wanted to get into server administration. In the last 5yrs while on my personal time I have achieved a degree in Server Administration and a few server/OS certs along the way. Now next May, with the direction that my company is going, they want my department to be CCNA(R&S, VoIP) certified and I will be attending that boot camp and getting certified. Even though my current degree and certs look good, they are sitting idle and I am getting certified in networking that my job is paying for. Now I think I may just go back to school and get a degree in Network Administration.

Is it not true?
after XP it took almost 6yrs to come out with a new OS. Now, there will be 3 new OSes in 6yrs.
It is indeed true that MS is out to remake all the money they lost from leaving XP on the carpet and letting it soak in.
So many people have XP now that MS is encouraging other companies to stop supporting it as to force people to upgrade.
Then you must live in high foliage, a building with lead paint or some other signal bashing source. Even in my home at -115dB on my 4G device I can still get a sustained 8+Mb speeds on the hotspot connection.
wow, nostalgia hits....66MHz 486DX was the first comp I ever built. After a few weeks I upgraded to 4MB RAM baby and that was 200$ my dad spent. I would have bought it, but I was only 12 at the time.
If someone asks for the temperature,......and I tell them directions in kilometers.
When the hell has anyone EVER asked for the temp? I can't even remember the last time anyone asked for directions.
Temp and GPS are readily available on the 'smart'phone now.
Now that I think about it I remember just before the cell phone explosion was the last time anyone asked me for the time.
I have and I am :)

This is where having an available proxy comes in hand :)
You are using a proxy....aren't you?
32, and no I didn't question it. :P
I was probably there with you

Oops, "facts". That spelling issue again.
It's okay, the copyright troll referenced in this article seems to lack an understanding of them as well.
ZING!!

Street view, drones(they are starting this in Texas), TSA, mobile devices, GPS, facial recognition and most everyone is on that database now.

Playing with toys is my day job then I play games in the evening.
That right there is a parental problem.
A friend of the family, about a decade ago, had the same thing happen to their 2yr old daughter.
I think YOU are the one who didn't get the joke...

No, just seems like they are trying to phase out older OSes faster and keep people current.

Everything else just means: you need to have faith in the original programmer and the team that handles the vulnerability reports.
Whom, like Adobe? Who take years to fix issues they already know about? fat chance
...but I'll pass on it now.

Yeah that was late 80s? early 90s?
