  1. Re:Spoken like a true CEO on Cybersecurity Czar Job Is Useless, Says Spafford · · Score: 1

As a rebuttal, when was the last time a "czar" position appeared with no statutory or budget authority attached?

However, the idea of a Cybersecurity Czar seems ineffective to begin with (remember DHS). A Cybersecurity Committee with mandatory quarterly/biannual face-to-face meetings with the POTUS seems more useful. The committee can concentrate on giving status updates and a high-level cost-benefit analysis that the POTUS could understand, while the POTUS would simply decide for or against.

It'd be cheaper (no separate department + overhead), the security folks can concentrate on their area of expertise instead of the politics, and the POTUS would have one less adviser breathing down his neck. It might suffer from design-by-committee flaws, but security people seem more apt to play nice with each other (at least from my 5000 mile view).

Because a gangsters are the bad guys. People are alright with to accept bad people doing bad things (some people may refer to it as conditioning, but I like to avoid labels that have connotations). When soldiers - good guys - do bad things it bothers normal people because its outside their comfort zone. Soldiers and other members of the armed forces are heroes in the eyes of many - up there with firefighters if not higher - so the outrage scales similarly.

Personally, I have a deep respect for the armed forces and the sacrifices they make for civilians each and every day. However, it seems that the anecdotal soldiers don't ask questions and politicians don't answer questions has made the world a less safer place.

  8. Confusion between statement and its understanding on Obama Makes a Push To Add Time To the School Year · · Score: 1
From TFS, but let's take it slower

Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a recent interview with The Associated Press. ... 'Young people in other countries are going to school 25, 30 percent longer than our students here,' Duncan told the AP. 'I want to just level the playing field.' ...

Everything is straightforward so far (except maybe where she got those numbers from)

Kids in the US spend more hours in school (1,146 instructional hours per year) than do kids in the Asian countries that persistently outscore the US on math and science tests

Wait but, kids in other countries go to school for for longer?

-- Singapore (903), Taiwan (1,050), Japan (1,005) and Hong Kong (1,013). That is despite the fact that Taiwan, Japan and Hong Kong have longer school years (190 to 201 days) than does the U.S. (180 days)."

So, does that mean more days the school year longer AND reducing the number of hours per day is correlated between math and science test scores.

The secretary's statement and the title "Obama Makes a Push To Add Time To the School Year" makes to make no sense on its own. Context please?

When the British took it over (through conquest I believe) they changed the name to something more in line with their own geography. The fact that York was not the British capital was meant to be a snub e.g. a town like York (at the time) was better than Amsterdam.

On the basis of the negotiating leverage these patents offered, in 2003 VIA arrived at an agreement with Intel that allowed for a ten year patent cross license, enabling VIA to continue to design and manufacture x86 compatible CPUs. VIA was also granted a three year grace period in which it could continue to use Intel socket infrastructure.
