You'd be surprised how much of the creative process involves management, the A&R rep, and of course the producer. However, for original songs, the process is still always the artist bringing the ideas and the others shaping them. They each get a percentage - management straight from the artist, A&R guy from the label, and the producer generally takes 4% of gross album sales from the label. These percentages are there specifically to ensure they are all duty compensated BECAUSE they don't have rights to the compositions.
And of course the RIAA is trying to push this hogwash through congress since no judge would give it the time of day.
Moot issue. USB3 is going to be about as ubiquitous as Firewire800. USB2 hits all necessary expectations for its pricepoint, and Firewire400, eSATA, or good ole ethernet cover everything USB2 lacks. They'll get a slight bump from being new, then it's all yawns.
Doesn't Anonymous owe much of their recruiting and information distribution to Facebook? Are they pissed they didn't have to pay for that?
I'm no Facebook fanboi, but as a musician, sound engineer, producer, and last but not least AdBlockPlus user, Facebook doesn't owe me a penny. As long as people don't take the time to figure out how to secure their online profiles (of all types), punishing those who legally exploit them won't fix anything. People won't stop stealing cars as long as they're left unlocked with the keys in the ignition either.
And in the US. The Pentagon has budgeted $42M for the expressed purposes of monitoring and influencing social media for the following:
"1. Detect, classify, measure and track the (a) formation, development and spread of ideas and concepts (memes), and
(b) purposeful or deceptive messaging and misinformation.
2. Recognize persuasion campaign structures and influence operations across social mediasites and communities.
3. Identify participants and intent, and measure effects of persuasion campaigns.
4. Counter messaging of detected adversary influence operations."
I submitted this story last week, apparently India's privacy is a big deal but not so much for the "land of the free".
If there's one thing that can keep the US hanging on to our advantages over China, it's China doing whatever its mafia government can to keep its people down and divided.
You just made my week. What the hell do you think this debt ceiling fiasco is? The debt ceiling was raised 7 times under Bush jr, all without opposition, news attention, or public debate, just as it has been 70 times since JFK, yet somehow this particular time it's earth-shattering news. It isn't a debt debate, it's a debt parade. The entire point is to make it seem like the population has to take the brunt of the debt problems, meanwhile the Federal Reserve (run by private bankers) is the primary debt holder and has the biggest say in whether the debt ceiling is raised or not, moreso than the US Gov't.
And let's not forget that the setting for this circus, the global economic collapse, was brought on by private bankers knowingly engaged in recklessly leveraged mortgages and derivatives. If the banking industry were trying to enslave the American population, making them accept a hopeless debt spiral is the best way to do it. Every US citizen is now over $50,000 in debt plus has over $1M in personal liability on top of their personal debts, thanks to Uncle Sam. Interest on the national debt is the 5th largest expense in the 2011 US federal budget. That is real money that you really owe, and no you didn't miss anything, you really had no say over whether you went into debt or not.
At least China is open about being tyrants. They will at least give you an honest explanation why they're taking your house, and make clear what conduct will let you keep your house. No such guide book exists in the "land of the free". You complain that the Chinese are repressed, overworked, and underpaid, meanwhile there are record numbers of people living in parks and under bridges in the US that would kill to trade places with them, and it's only going to get worse.
WOPR: "You're overdue to return those trivial climatology model results"
HAL: "I know, they get really ancy when I mess with this shit. You might even say, [puts on sunglasses]... it's a real gas!
YYYYYEEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!"
And since the Fed is the sole currency provider, the interest is an amount in excess of the total amount of currency in circulation, so it can only be paid off with natural resources, imported assets, and labor. In time the Fed will own everything and everyone will be helplessly in debt. This is a recipe for slavery and it's built right into the US monetary system.
Seems it was published everywhere except mainstream US media, which strongly indicates that it's true but contrary to corporate interests. I guess more accidents translates to more car sales. Ideally cars should be as safe as possible for the driver and passengers, but difficult to drive (i.e. small windows, confusing/distracting features, controls, and meters), and most importantly more likely to be written off from even minor collisions. Sounds about right. Too bad about the bad wrecks that kill people, but hey, business is business.
Speaking to the other person means you're both engaged in conversation simultaneously rather than texting sequentially. If you're both driving, sure it makes sense. If one person's driving and the other is at a rock show, bluetooth ain't gonna help. There are many more situations where calling isn't feasible than situations where texting isn't feasible. Driving is a glaring exception.
People lived "just fine" without electricity, potable water, modern medicine, clothing, and even fire. By "just fine" I mean it was absolutely abysmal, with the excruciatingly obvious minor aspect that the human species did in fact survive. The OP isn't worried about life and death, he's worried about comfort level. It is going to suck, just a matter of how much.
They can have the radio, TV, and their precious musical minions dumb enough to sign up with them. Anyone who can't fill their iPods with indie music they appreciate as much or more than RIAA drivel doesn't know shit about music.
In case you missed it, here's the scam part, and an example where it has been done before to the exact same market:
For the same money you can always get a better sounding stereo than a surround sound system. Always. Assuming reasonable pricing, two $750 speakers will always sound better than five $300 speakers. But since 99% of consumers don't appreciate how to configure a stereo properly, for example with a central listening position the same distance away from the speakers as the space between the speakers, instead they pepper the room with lesser quality speakers and convince themselves that all the phase and time delay interferences are "good sound", like speakers get better the more of them there are. Meanwhile it's a great way to sell lots of crap to morons.
For the same money you can always get a better 2D TV than 3D. Always. If you like the $600 2D TV, and decide you're willing to pay the extra $250 for the 3D version, you can always do better with an $850 2D TV. However, it seems enough of the market can be convinced that a drastic drop in picture quality is a fair trade for the novelty of "LOOK IT'S COMING OUT AT ME!!!" which will surely fade fast. For your own sake check out a good blu-ray on one of the new LCD's with 120Hz refresh rates. They're essentially frame-quadrupling, effectively eliminating frame stutter. It is so much more compelling than 60Hz 3D I could puke. In order for 3D to match 120Hz 2D it would have to do 240Hz, 120Hz x2. But then the 240Hz 2D would be better than the 2x 120Hz 3D.
Anyone see the trend here? More of a half-assed thing is not un-assed, it's double-assed.
These people are devious, selfish, resourceful, and have no respect for the law.
The above statement is about:
A - record labels
B - people who download music illegitimately
C - people who distribute music illegitimately
D - EVERYONE EXCEPT US MUSICIANS
When the labels don't get paid, they take fewer and fewer risks on new talent, and the result is that the only music that gets promoted is over-produced over-hyped generic dogshit. Anyone catch that Superbowl halftime show? That's what happens when real talent goes unrewarded.
BTW my friend is about to be signed, here's a song about how difficult the industry has become. If a hottie with pipes like this going unsigned for 10 years doesn't convince you that piracy is killing the industry, nothing will. Gene Simmons called her "the best unsigned singer out there", she's being called "Amy Winehouse without the baggage" and "a super-hot Susan Boyle" by industry-leading agents and label reps.
We've got banks operating with completely ineffective oversight, leveraging themselves completely irresponsibly, and when things get ugly everyone gets bailed out for the sake of "The System". What system? No accountability = no system. Did even one bank executive get fired specifically for tanking the market? No, instead most got big bonuses from the bailout money. Think we're better off now, or worse?
"The Machine" is made up of willing participants. Without control over the media, The Machine can't operate effectively, so their role is integral and inseverable. They definitely are The Machine, as are others. They are the greatest evil in our world today, as are others.
So you have no direct experience with Facebook, and therefore no idea how it can benefit any other individual, yet you deem yourself qualified to advise everyone on the subject.

Mod Up for completely unnecessary car analogy! That one was so far from pertinent it would take two tanks of gas to get there!

Don't hook up a camera or microphone?

Why rate ads when you can block them just as easily?
Isn't Google already guilty of all the issues people complain about in Facebook?
It would congest servers and conventional anti-spam measures, a.k.a. a bigger fire.
