I was disgusted by the cheating I saw during my time at CMU. This was in the days before it was possible to get help on the Internet. The web was still a curiosity. What was available, however, was unlimited of free "help" for any female who wanted it. Lonely and desperate CMU guys were all too happy to spend hours doing whatever it took to curry favor with women. It was all available, everything from homework copying all they way to entire engineering/coding projects done for them and then explained afterward.
It wasn't even like this was hidden. You could see it everywhere. There were guys who would toll the computers labs (few people had personal computers then) for damsels in distress. My girlfriend at the time couldn't work in a lab without a constant streams of Zephers asking if she needed help.
The whole thing made me sick. There were people who would have killed to be able to attend a CMU engineering program and these were people shitting all over it. They could care less about learning.
That was the beginning of my introduction to The Real World.
The researchers next decided to record and manipulate the beetle-produced sounds. They focused on an aggression call produced by males of the "tree killer" Dendroctonus species.
...
This was particularly graphic when the researchers played the manipulated sounds right as a male and female beetle were about to mate.
Hofstetter said his team would "watch in horror as the male beetle would tear the female apart."
Beetle stuff!!! How long before the scientists have NOW banging down their door? Maybe they can play some of those altered Rush Limbaugh tapes. NOW activists + high volume Limbaugh shows. Imagine the carnage!
One might argue that the fact that the human species wastes so much money (and as a consequence, resources) on fulfilling carnal desires rather than advancing it's civilization, points out that we do not collectively really represent a very high standard of intelligence.
Being alive == chasing carnal desires. To hope otherwise is pointless.
Does it bother anyone else when people start their comment in the subject and continue it in the body? It severely interrupts my reading flow. Is it just me?
I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned the Google Chrome Frame plugin for IE6/7/8. It's the easiest way to handle IE6 insanity and it gives the user a great experience. We've had good luck getting people to install it for TwitGrids. We were concerned about peoples' willingness to install a plugin to access the site but our worry was totally unfounded. Users could care less. A couple clicks and they're getting a zippy Chrome experience inside their dumpy old IE6/7 browser. The people who actually care which plugins are installed are already hitting us with Chrome or Firefox.
Isn't this in direct contradiction to something PayPal said a day or two ago? Something akin to "golly gee we're not sure what happened but we're looking into it".
Take everything Paypal says with a grain of salt. Their place on my trust scale is somewhere in the vicinity of meth-head stripper.
There are endless armies of people with nothing who sleep on the streets, beg, and dig though mountains of garbage for anything of value. I have seen it myself.
Most people, myself included, use Google Mail (or at least their web interface) to check and compose e-mail. That's it. With Buzz thrown in the mix, now people can check their email as well as follow the people they're emailing through pictures, videos, status updates, etc. All of these things are way outside the realm of emailing, which is, like regular mail, to simply correspond..
I don't mean to be insulting by this at all but it sounds like you're old and out of touch with how most people communicate in 2010. The email only crowd is generally 30 plus. The "under 30" idea of corresponding is exactly "pictures, videos, status updates, etc." That makes Buzz a natural fit with gmail. It's kind of a one stop shop for all you're communication needs. Buzz probably won't catch on but I hardly think it's out of place.
Soon on Slashdot, we will not longer be discussing laptop computers because they are going to be as ubiquitous and cheap (as in 'Toys R Us' cheap) as the humble pocket calculator.
Intel and Microsoft disagree with you on that. They're doing everything they can to keep regular laptops costing around $500. Both companies have restrictions on the hardware that can be put into a netbook. Manufacturers who don't follow the rules miss out of preferential pricing deals which essentially prices them out of the market.
The only real hope for $100 netbooks is ARM + Linux. You can bet your life that Intel and Microsoft will do everything possible to derail the ARM train.
When I was a kid it was popular to point to various things in the USSR like the inability to travel freely without "showing your papers" as evidence of totalitarian oppression. Here in 2010 "showing your papers" is as American as apple pie! Fuck, kids can't even bring techie looking projects to school without triggering a terror scare and being in danger of prosecution under insane laws that make it a crime to do anything that some uneducated moron might confuse with a terrorist act.
They terrorists HAVE ALREADY WON, no doubt about it.
I wish I had modpoints today. Note that gunpal is the official payment processor of http://www.auctionarms.com/ It's not some little fly-by-night company.
I'll take the milfs:)
those ladies have experience
They also have skin with massive sun damage, stretch marks, cellulite, and tits that are a mess after two or three births, and that's the ones who've chosen to stay natural. Surgically enhanced MILFs are even worse. Overinflated lips, over-tight facelifts, implants, and botox face...Ugh! None of it ends up looking or feeling anywhere near natural. Were talking Uncanny Valley territory here.
I'll take the 19 year olds, thanks! : ) They can quickly learn to do all the MILF tricks and teaching is fun.
I note that this is still a effectively 2 CPUs with 3 cores each
You need to skim a little slower. It is a single die, native six core chip. From the article:
Westmere 6C (codename Gulftown) is a native six-core chip
Yes, some functional blocks are "split in two" and assigned to three cores. Those blocks are split up because it makes engineering sense to do so, not because the designers were lazy or "slapped together" two non-six core designs.
If you look at a GPU with 10's or 100's of cores you will see that some functions are "split up" with each piece being assigned to (and located close close by!) some subset of cores. That does not make them "effectively X number of CPU's."
I hope they do charge for it. I'm sick and tired of being spammed with movies/games/etc every time I fire up my P3. I use it to play bluray. That's it. I have no interest in online movie rental or ps3 games. The giant thumbnail previews littered throughout XMB interface really piss me off. Don't even get me started on the ticker thing.
Not every culture shares the American belief that nudity is sexual. I have a Swedish friend who regularly goes on beach holidays with her parents, brother, and sister. On these holidays they spend entire days together at the beach, completely nude. As an American, I can't imagine anything more uncomfortable and terrifying than an all nude family beach day. To her it's perfectly natural and normal.
The only people who could love this idea are liberal gun grabbers who are afraid somebody might get hurt with a gun.
There are gun haters on both sides.
My city is full of gun loving "liberals". Ok, they're Democrats but that's as close as you get in America. There are practically no boys in school on open day (first day of deer season for you non-hunters). The average guy has a few rifles and a pistol or two and we're a very liberal city by US standards.
Meanwhile, a conversation about deer season springs up at work. Most of my Republican coworkers are aghast! GUNS? OMG! How can you have those in the house? Aren't you afraid you'll shoot someone? Aren't those things for dumb ass Joe Sixpack? You're smart! Why would you own GUNS?!?!
About 80% of my conservative and/or Republican coworkers think guns are scary and only dumbasses own them.
I've never worked for any company that didn't require a bachelor's degree from a good school. A masters or phd from a decent school is the norm. A decent number of people are ivy league grads with advanced degrees.
Resumes from candidates with bachelor's degrees from state schools are trashed on arrival. Resumes without a college degree are photocopied, distributed, and ridiculed. Once in a while a degreeless applicants will get a phone screen but only for the amusement of the screener. They have no chance of being hired. We weren't hiring them in the late 90's. We certainly aren't hiring them in this economy!

Ah, yes. Republicans. Nature's eternal victims.
It's hard to be a rich white guy in 21st century America.

Look at what America has become since 9/11.

Because that provides a financial incentive for the government to lock people up. If you fail to see how that could be a problem please read this: Judges Plead Guilty in Scheme to Jail Youths for Profit

With the electric car, when your battery is dead, it's dead and you're going to be spending hours, or perhaps all night, waiting for it to recharge.
The car in this story will do a full charge in 45 minutes not hours.

Really now. If what these guys are saying is true and any cells can be reprogrammed. What's the big benefit of harvesting embryo's?
They're fun to make and even more fun to "harvest."
