We've been receiving some questions on the platform and operating systems affected by this attack. So far we've only seen websites using Microsoft IIS webserver and Microsoft SQL Server being hit. Do note that this attack doesn't use any vulnerabilities in any of those two applications. What makes this attack possible is poorly written ASP and ASPX (.net) code.
From the sounds of that, I'm guessing that it is an MS only problem...unless F-Secure are being *very* dishonest and not pointing out that it somehow effects LAMP as well.
This is to stop members from buying used units from ex-members instead of buying from the official (and very expensive) source. Also to keep people from testing them independently and verifying for themselves that they are, in fact, completely useless and total bullshit.
Live performances nowadays are the only way to make money, and just because recordings made money last century doesn't mean that there's an automatic right to make money from recordings in this century.
I think this has been the case for longer than people care to realize. With very few exceptions, most musicians out there essentially use the CD almost soley as a promotional tool for their upcoming tours and have been doing so for some time. That's why, nine times out of ten, the major labels are the ones who get pissed while the artists could care less, since more people listening to their music generally correlates strongly to more people coming to concerts and buying t-shirts, beer, etc.
And I'm not just talking about the your local singer/songwriter at the coffee shop. I myself am an avid death metal fan (and probably wouldn't be one if it weren't for file sharing) and a few years ago got a chance to meet and hang out with the band Cannibal Corpse, who are the best-selling band of all time for the genre. They even conceded that throughout most of their career, which began around 1989, the majority of their money was made by touring and selling shirts.
The bottom line? If you're really interested in compensating the people who are *creating* the music, the live show is the place to do it. You should definitely buy the CD so the band doesn't get dropped from the label, but live shows are where supporting the artists has been and will be for some time to come.
Just seeing the picture of the iMac mouse made my hand cramp up. Thanks a lot, now what will I do while watching my Valentine's pr0n in the basement!?!?
One wonders if the accounting on European films is more honest. European film industries are heavily subsidized by the state, and when you have to report back to the state on what you've done with their funding, perhaps there is less temptation to cook the books.
While I can see how that would be beneficial in some regards, it also leads to utter travesties like the films of Uwe Boll. I bet German taxpayers aren't too happy to know that their hard-earned money went to subsidize such cinema classics as "House of the Dead" and "Bloodrayne." Of course the wonders of free-market capitalism haven't saved us from shit like "Pearl Harbor"...I wonder when the Invisible Hand is going to strangle Michael Bay?
I'm not sure I fully understand your last two paragraphs. I got the impression from the article that Linux on desktop machines was all Linus really cared about ("I have never, ever cared about really anything but the Linux desktop," emphasis mine). To me it sounds like you're reading it as just the opposite.
Excuse me, the term is Pastafarian, you insensitive clod!
Kidding aside, I agree that it's absolutely unfair for them to ask for this kind of special treatment. Including depictions of Muhammad is not a deliberate act of provocation, but rather an attempt to include as much information in the article as possible. As noted by many other Slashdotters, not even all Muslims consider the practice offensive. And even that aside, YOU DON'T HAVE THE INALIENABLE RIGHT TO NOT BE OFFENDED. Such as right would be impossible, contradictory and absurd to uphold. I'm sure there are plenty of Christians who don't like the image in the Cross of St. Peter article, but the it should still be there.
I wonder what all this will mean for YUI (Yahoo! User Interface). Something tells me the Microsoft wouldn't be too keen on spending money to maintain and support an open-source JavaScript library whilst also trying to force Silverlight down everyone's throats...
There is no evidence that proves God doesn't exist. Until that is found your stipulation has no merit.
Also no evidence against the Flying Spaghetti Monster. There's only one reason why people are willing to give *any* credence to the idea of a sentient, divine, supernatural creator that has human characteristics and that's because they were raised, scared, extorted or cajoled to believe so.
His point seems to be that this stuff is an affront to human dignity, which has nothing to do with religion. E.g. I for example have dignity yet am not a follower of any religion.
Yes, but I think you're missing the point; he's using his status as a religious leader as his credential for commenting on human dignity, which, IMHO, is horse shit. Some things that are affronts to human dignity include, but aren't limited to:
Fighting efforts to give contraceptives to areas of the world plagued by lethal STDs (especially considering the overwhelming majority of people in that region aren't Catholic and don't give a shit about what you have to say)
Pussyfooting around when pedophiles are blatantly using your organization to hide from the law.
And, most relevant to this situation...
Standing in the way of scientists who are trying to help cure people of horrible diseases just because your narrow, hair-splitting view of the world dictates that frozen embryos are more important than living, breathing people with lives, families, hopes and fears.
Where exactly does he derive his moral authority from? From an old book that's essentially the greatest hits of Hebrew scripture, four contradictory accounts of the life of a guy who spoke Aramaic but are mysteriously written in Greek, a couple letters and the rantings of a crazy guy trapped on an island? If people want to believe that, fine. If people want to refuse treatment based on these kinds of "morals," fine. But the rest of us, who are interested in helping people, shouldn't be forced to live in the dark ages. Don't forget that dissection for research purposes used to be considered blasphemy on largely the same grounds. Where would modern medicine be if we didn't actually have any idea of where things were located in the body and how they worked?
As soon as they make one that's cheap and looks cool enough so that it makes Jennifer Connelly fall in love with me I'll be on board. Until then, I wanna try one of those sweet wing suits out over some Norwegian fjords!
Maybe this is why? As a CS student, I can tell you that people fresh out of college these days will laugh at goto since every CS teacher they've ever had has slapped them on the wrist for even *mentioning* the use of a goto statement, not to mention the damage that would be done to their grade if they actually used one in a program.
NOBODY expects the Pentagon! Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... Our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency.... Our *three* weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...and an almost fanatical devotion to W.... Our *four*...no... *Amongst* our weapons.... Amongst our weaponry...are such elements as fear, surprise.... I'll come in again.
Wow, you did a great job problem solving this problem so quickly! While we're on solving problems of a practical, day-to-day nature, perhaps you can help me out. See, I just started this job as a traveling salesman and I was wondering, given a number of cities and the costs of traveling from any city to any other city, what is the least-cost round-trip route that visits each city exactly once and then returns to the starting city?
Any ideas?
Indeed, I think Picard put it best...
"They invade our space, and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds, and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far, no further!"
AKs and atom bombs didn't come out of thin air; they are the result of thousands upon thousands of years of human beings coming up with progressively more efficient ways of killing each other. We had to start somewhere: fists, rocks, sticks, etc. Think, even, of the examples of genocide recorded in the Bible. They didn't have advanced technology or the ability to kill quickly and without thinking. Rather, they just fucking lost their minds and kept killing. I've never seen or heard of lions engaging in this kind of behavior.
Oh! Violence isn't natural? Geez...those predators have been doing things wrong for a long time, how 'bout you go tell them that?
Predators prey upon other creatures for food. I'm not saying that it's impossible for a lion to kill a smaller creature just for the hell of it (or to hone their abilities further), but I feel that the comparison you're drawing doesn't fit. Never in the history of the world have we observed lions massacring lions by the millions or lions snapping one day and taking out 30 other lions before taking their own life. It simply doesn't happen. When lions (and other creatures) fight each other, it's to prove which one is stronger. The difference is akin to the UFC vs say, a school shooting. Both are violent, but there is a *very* important difference: in the UFC, both parties agree to fight under certain rules to prove who is the stronger fighter. After the fight is over, both sides reflect on how it went, think about what they could improve and train harder for next time. Thus UFC, like animals fighting their own species to prove dominance, breeds strength. The school shooting, on the other hand, is an insane, parasitic destruction of life. The school shooting only serves to temporarily gratify the emotions of the shooter. At the end of the day, a bunch of people are dead, cut down like lambs to the slaughter. There are no heroes and the community is weakened by the events.
The bottom line is, sex is much, much more natural/healthy than the kinds of violence depicted in a lot of video games. For the life of me I can't understand why everyone thinks that, at some point, you may have to pump some one full of lead with a machine gun but sex is this terrible, unspeakable evil. I mean, the reason we're sitting here right now posting on Slashdot is because at some point in the past, our parents had sex and viola, out we came. *cringes* How many of our parents have ever killed someone? There's a very important distinction between violence in the sense of rough housing and wrestling and violence in the sense of total war and massacre.
I myself have struggled with my weight for a number of years. Both of my brothers were tall, skinny and naturally excelled at cross country running. I was the fat one. I never seemed to be able to figure out why.
I tried a number of things: brute force calorie cutting, the yogurt diet, and even (largely because I was still in hs and my parents were doing it) the Atkins diet.
I managed to lose weight with each of those and, I will admit, I lost the most weight on the Atkins diet. However, there was one hitch; I was *constantly* tired. The lack of carbs was killing me, but the weight I was losing motivated me to stick with it. I lost about 25lbs and was able to keep it off for roughly a semester before going back up to gaining back about 10 pounds and eventually getting back to where I started Sophomore year of college. I decided that I needed to lose weight again, but I wasn't sure where to start. So I just decided to make it simple: no fries, no sodas, no candy, etc. You know, just cutting out the obvious junk food. What I did differently this time was added exercise to the mix. Thanks to following 'this plan, I went from being 5' 9", 190lbs and unable to run a mile to being 5'9", 165lbs and able to run 5k at a clip. I still have a ways to go, but the point is, introducing exercise into the mix helped more than I ever thought it could and it made losing the weight easier and more fun than I ever though it could be.
The guy in TFA seems to be too narrow in his focus; it's not just about manipulating numbers on a scale. If people paid more attention to getting good quality exercise and measuring the results each week, I think many would be surprised at how well they can do without any fancy talk about glycemic indices and so forth.

the gas station blew up after the robot sparked a fat, Amsterdam blunt while pumping fuel. *ducks*

a zombie attack? And if so, can it compensate for the differences between slow-moving George Romero zombies and fast-moving British zombies?
Bite my shiny, metal ass!

Mad Science. Seriously, I'm dying for some funding on my research dealing with the re-animation of human flesh.
