This guy is going to get a lot of people killed. Mount a generator on a table? High temperature exhaust hose for the generator (actually kind of difficult to come by)
Please. You're still ignoring the original issue which is the fact there isn't enough money anywhere to keep shoring up the our aging infrastructure. Attempting to blame decay on BUSHCO is silly. All of the DC Scoundrels(TM) are complicit.
What makes it worse is OBAMACO is planning more of the same by "investing" in huge public works projects that will simply continue the exacerbate the same problems we have now.
Oh please spare us the BUSHCO crap. The I-35 bridge didn't suddenly deteriorate over the past 8 years.
Taking the nation's infrastructure for granted has been going on since it was first created. Short-term profits were what drove the 90s. Remember the dot com boom and bust? Grow up.
There was a decent Op-Ed piece in the NYT discussing this issue: Reboot America
"I read all three pages of the article and I couldn't tell you what a single ad was for, right now. Don't even see them. I'm not blocking them.. they're there... just read right through them and pay no attention, though."
Ahhh...but the fact is they ARE there and they are taking bandwidth. I use adblocker and noscript on my home PC (unfortunately not available as I'm not home) so I think my original point is valid. And don't be so sure about not paying them any attention! The impressions are being made...
So I go to read the "Top Technology Breakthroughs" in TFA and see the link opens a WIRED article.
In the space of the article's three pages there are three annoying for a survey and ads - including one from Porsche (how friggin appropriate in these times).
I just realized my technology "breakthrough" is to give up on technology because all it seems to do is enable the friggin marketers to "reach" me in new ways.
And this is what pisses me off so much!
People like Avi Rubin WARNED of the pitfalls in Dielbold (and other) systems years ago and the pols didn't listen.
I remember writing to my Maryland State Rep YEARS ago about inherent problems in Diebold systems and referred him to Professor Rubin's work and got the pat-on-the-head response telling me not to worry.
Screw all of them. I can't believe how angry this makes me.
My mother always used to call me when her Windows crapped out. Win 3.1, 95, 98, 2000, XP.
I kept offering to set her up with a MAc or Linux-based machine but Noooooooo... she wanted to stick with Windows.
Funny how everytime she called asking "How do I fix this?" I would answer with a description of the problem and how to solve it.
Invariably she would say "Noooooo. That can't be it."
Then WHY ARE YOU ASKING ME?
So, I'm saying the correct answer is to set them up with Linux. Ubuntu seems good. Anything but Windows.
And in my case it doesn't matter because the whole experience made me swear off computers and answering my phone.
Air traffic controllers worldwide use English as an ersatz standard in order to prevent confusion (especially important when stress levels are high in the cockpit). Perhaps this thinking makes sense for EULAs as well.

I agree.
I bet that most people stick with newspapers because they are a "Tradition" or habit they've gotten used to.
"...it is a beast when something breaks on a Novell server?"
Fraid not. You can actually fix it, generally in short order, without having to reinstall the whole damn OS like you do with M$.
Good old Netware just worked and worked. I had one server that was up for 18 months and only restarted due to an extended power outage.
Well, I guess we need to agree to disagree.
I've always seen Google's Sponsored Links (which show up shaded at the top of a search) as "weighted" while the rest of the list as being neutral. Maybe i've been wrong for a long time! but I think not. I think most people view search engines as supposing to be neutral. (I know they aren't but I think their ubiquity lends credence to that belief.) My 2 cents.
If they had said they were doing that from the start I'd agree with what oyu are saying but I believe they were purposely vague about how their search works.
Didn't you always think Google hits were the result of their search algorithm?
Looks like Google is positioning itself to take over MS tactics. I'll await their History Eraser button applet.
Oh well! What with Google's admission that they manipulate search results I won't trust them anymore. Sounds like the search engince industry is ripe for a new Top Dog... one that can be trusted.
My favorite line from TFA is the last one:
"The Forrester report "How Much Monday are Your Idle PCs Wasting?" is available for $279."
Please raise your hands if you know someone who would buy that!
Nonsense. I was hired by an organization as a sysadmin supporting a LAN/WAN and 150 desktops without a degree. After doing that for three years I was hired as a CTO for a larger organization - 400 desktops and a 6 figure salary. Now I'm doing the same at an even larger org.
It always gets down to the individual's characteristics. I've hired degreed and non-degreed IT people and the degree usually is the last thing I consider... right down there with "certifications".

left out the word "pop-ups" - (there are three annoying pop-ups for a) SORRY!

Why can't Paterson make up for the shortfall by selling Hillary's Senate seat to Caroline!
I'm guessing that by the time IE 10 is released it won't run at all finally making for a safe browser experience.
Agreed. They ought to call it NepoGIMP. Now that's a name.

Mebbe they'll start simulating software that works properly.

Seriously.
