I started running a TOR relay in response to the situation in Iran. Apparently Time-Warner Cable is not TOR friendly. I've noticed that about twice a day, my internet connection goes dead (and stays that way). I can power-cycle the cable modem and it's good for another 10-12 hours. Resetting my cable modem twice a day is a very small price to pay to help folks risking their lives for freedom. Nevertheless, it is annoying.
The pattern so far is to pass complex pieces of legislation along strictly partisan lines so quickly that Congress can't read it and the public can't react to it. The last thing the administration wants is real public comment on this.
Shell is a business - the management has a fiduciary responsibility to shareholders to manage their investments carefully. The price of oil dropped from $140 / barrel to around $40. This represents a large drop in the value of Shell assets. Demand for petroleum is way down due to the global recession. Cutting back on marginal projects with little prospect of short to medium term profit is the right move in this economic environment.
You DO realize that government money comes with government control. Your open source project uses encryption, better provide key escrow for the NSA. You're doing an open source browser - better provide government mandated content filtering.
In days of yore, the teacher would have demanded the student pay attention and probably gotten compliance. Or the teacher would have threatened to make a phone call to the parents. Falling that the teacher would have grabbed the student by the arm and marched her down to the vice principal. Today, that would result in a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the school.
In too many schools, teachers haver zero authority, and students and even parents don't care about education.
Did the teacher overreact - sure. They probably should have just ignored the texting and all the other disruptions small and large in the class. Is it any wonder that 50% of teachers quit teaching in the first few years of their "career".
Vince: You get this great copy of Vista Ultimate for only $19.95. But wait, for a limited time we'll throw in a free upgrade to Windows 7. Order now and we'll also include a 'Sham-Woz' (just like a real 'Woz' but from Redmond)...
I use the Ubuntu Netbook Remix GUI for my Asus EEE 900. It's very nice and I very much prefer it to the default Asus interface. It's also built on Ubuntu 8.04.

If 10km can make such a difference, all the ski resorts should be in danger. :)
Only if you ski on Mars.
Perhaps they should use something more like this.
I imagine there is a fairly large server farm somewhere near Ft. Meade, MD.
At least they didn't kick the Google Street View car into a bottomless well.
I have no problem with allowing ICANN to be controlled by a group of nations which all have a constitutional guarantee of freedom of speech.
Makes a big part of their land agricultural (lower tax rate) rather than commercial. Not to mention the Federal Mohair subsidy.
Question: how do you burn a digital book?
Depends on whether you are making a CD or DVD ...
Or a Q-ship (been reading too much of Weber's Honor Harrington series).
I'd wait till the control system has the new ZERO System enhancement.
...that the Region 1 DVD's didn't play in Brown's Region 2 player. On his next visit Obama will give him a modding kit.
and an NTSC-compatible television and power converter.

Is the finger made of glass?
Clearly too many people are playing Turok.
Banning video games and knives is not sufficient. Clearly we need robots to "to serve and obey and guard men from harm".
Being a planet is a valuable thing. So, how much did it cost Pluto?
1) Pull out gun, fire at foot repeatedly.
2) ????
3) Profit
Come one, it's clear Microsoft really cares about the American worker.
Yeah, as in ... "I am altering the license. Pray I don't alter it any further".

Does this mean that the popular press will finally stop writing articles about the "poor drowning polar bears"?
